Forthcoming album due July 17th.

I know some people here are not very into them but their newer stuff just keeps getting better. Proof of it is the aceness of the next single "Pull Shapes" which is up on their Myspace page. Opinions?

i'm pretty keen on hearing this, i agree the songs are getting better, although i like all of their singles.

they're nice people but like fandango i saw them on tv and my god, they're appalling. it's a pity because i like their aesthetic, and i like the idea of a girl group doing what they do, but their execution is just dire. they REALLY can't sing! and why we need that when there are girl groups who can sing around is a mystery to me.

having said that, i think that if the pipettes ever discovered protools or autotune, they could be pretty awesome. but they must ruin it with their indie insistence on rubbish vocals.

I'd like them more if they weren't so faceless -- if they had some kind of lead singer(s) to rely on, some kind of consistent vocal/lyrical perspective. I don't know these people; why should I care?

The only song of theirs I like -- and I haven't heard the album, just various singles/live recordings/etc. -- is "We Are the Pipettes". Which is a bit weird, given that I can't endorse the lyrics. I would rather they weren't the Pipettes.

i heard the album at the weekend, it's much better than that atrocious live performance - apparently the vocals are not autotuned, maybe the just sing better in the studio. they're still not great though, quite flat and strained, and they don't really seem to know how to bring out the emotional nuances of their lyrics.

The album is shockingly overproduced -- I never liked the band much, but I sort of understood what they were getting at (or trying, at any rate). This, though -- this is laden with oppressive, out-of-place synthesizers, and might as well be the work of any old major-label Popular Music factory. That decision works, by my reckoning, exactly once -- "Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me", which is entertaining in a disjointed kind of way, all vocal parts and superfluous synth noises sticking out at odd angles over uncharacteristically loud drums. But most of the rest of it is pretty actively horrible. The lyrics, too -- there is some pretty unpalatable stuff going on here, especially in the late-album filler. I hope they're being ironically stupid, though on the other hand that still wouldn't help much.

Also: worst appropriation of the "Be My Baby" drum intro in recorded history? Could be!

I agree, the production is very offputting - prime example of that overcompressing technique as pointed out by stylus - ruins some of their best singles, 'dirty mind' for example

the pipettes vs the brunettes seems a legitimate fight. i'd pick the brunettes cause i think johnathan bree has far more musical ambition. they're both commited to some sort of success beyond the creative process and the brunettes are surely just as contrived as the pipettes but he's the secret weapon, i'm convinced their new record will be epic and huge and pristine while the pipettes cd will be several lovely versions of a set of similar songs but maybe they'll expand on it in the future just as the brunettes have.
