After enjoying Macho City (on Disco not Disco) and now Slinky (from Bumrocks) I'm intrigued to know more about this band. What else is worth tracking down?

Book of Dreams has a lot of his hits/well-known favorites, among them "Swingtown", "Jungle Love", "Threshold/Jet Airliner".

Perhaps it's just a symptom of me growing up in a classic-rock laden North American suburb, but like whaddaya mean you don't know about Steve Miller? He is a master of good-timey, stoned sunny FM classic rock. He has loads of greatest hits records, but lots of them have edited versions of some of his longer songs. Go get the following tracks -

Fly Like an Eagle (w/Space Intro)
Wild Mountain Honey
SwingTown
Jungle Love
Shubada Du Ma Ma
Winter Time
Living in the USA
Rockin' Me
Take the Money and Run
The Stake
My Dark Hour
Winter Time
Kow Kow Calqulator
Quicksilver Girl
Abracadabra

And he also did a pretty ill version of 'Drive My Car' by the Beatles.

I have a feeling you'll be suprised at just how many of these songs you've heard before. Wait, are you from England? Was Steve Miller big here?

Greypejuice, Monday, 8 May 2006 11:23 (twenty years ago)

Sailor is their/his masterpiece.

Steve Miller has had only three hit singles in the UK - Rock 'N Me, Abracadabra and The Joker.

Thanks for the info so far!

Steve Miller as Marcello says wasn't that big here (yes I'm in the UK). I'm particularly interested in those that have the more Balearic/experimental bent like the two I listed.

you won't find another "Macho City" in his catalog (he was absolutely crucified by the press for that, at the time), but Fly Like An Eagle and Book Of Dreams (recorded simultaneously, as I recall) should partially satisfy your Balearic jones, on a much smaller scale...Greypejuice picked all the right tracks...

Indeed, Sailor is his/their best record. Check it out.

Steve Miller Band - Classic or Dud
Steve Miller - C/D?
Steve Miller in the early '80s
Steve Miller Band - Sailor

seek the track "Wild Mountain Honey" from the 'Fly Like An Eagle' LP -- one of the great late-70s psych tracks.

before i die i want to hear "rock 'n me" on an absolutely massive soundsystem but i phj3ar the changes in DJ culture necessary to effectuate this eventuality

what's the deal with people using Balearic as a musical adjective lately? i see it all the time over at http://www.djhistory.com/forum/

i figure it's used to mean spacey, but doesn't it really just mean like spanish or mediteranean? what's the deal?

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 8 May 2006 16:54 (twenty years ago)

yeah, this is what i'm assuming. but does it mean really fucking cheesy trance, then?

jäxøñ (jaxon), Monday, 8 May 2006 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Not originally. Some answers here...

What in God's name does Balearic mean?

Treblekicker (treblekicker), Monday, 8 May 2006 21:10 (twenty years ago)

man, they were so mid-70s he should have a U.S. bicentennial tatto on his forehead.

Carlos Keith (Buck_Wilde), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 04:50 (twenty years ago)

jäxøñ (jaxon), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 04:54 (twenty years ago)

I like "Winter Time" a lot...

Joe (Joe), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 17:10 (twenty years ago)

VERY funky drummer, whose name I can't remember offhand. Great bass playing, too, in "Macho City", as far as I recall (only heard the complete 16-minute version once 20+ yrs ago.) Hell, even "Abracadabra" didn't sound half-bad on JACK-FM this morning!

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 17:43 (twenty years ago)

I got the Children Of The Future album earlier this year and I was really surprised at how 60's psych (think early Pink Floyd) it was. His first few albums are like 'rock cannon'. Those were the days when Boz Scaggs was still in the groop. Boz has Balearic props for Jojo.
