"True Blue" is easily her best album, hands down. I mean, people, "Open Your Heart" and "Live To Tell" are on it plus "White Heat" and "Jimmy Jimmy".

I'd say "Like A Prayer" is insubstantial beyond the singles.

"Promise to Try" does drag, but, yeah, I'd say LAP and the eponymous debut are song-for-song her best, followed by Erotica, Ray of Light, Confessions on a Dance Floor, in that order.

Why does every chick love "Like A Prayer?" it's such a horrendous marathon.

My favs are of course, "Everybody(in dub)"
"Angel" is a great example of pop sincerity.
Call me crazed, but I'm still really digging on "Sorry" it strikes me as having a really true urgency about it.
Obvious choice, but it's hard to fuck with "Into the Groove" in almost any given setting.
"Burning Up" is of course the most steller valley girl pillow fight ever.

Both "Sorry" and "Hung Up", well, to find a stronger Madonna single than either of those two, you have to go back to "Take A Bow", if not "Bad Girl" or "Deeper And Deeper".

I know no one else agrees with me but "Cherish" makes me want to kill. I really, really, really fucking hate that song and it's the primary reason I will never, ever, ever intentionally purchase "Like A Prayer".

"Cherish" is pretty sappy and sing-songy (and the staccato 'YOU - are - MY DEST - ineee / baby - CAN'T - you - SEEEE' doesn't help the melody) but I kinda love the whole album unequivocally.

"Over and Over" is my fave non-single lp cut.

Seek "Like a Prayer" in particular but also "Like a Virgin", "Music" and "Ray Of Light".

Destroy "Erotica" in particular, but also "Bedtime Stories" and her pointless "Evita" and "I'm Breathless" albums.

"American Life" is better than its reputation, but still not among her classics.

seven months pass...

I bought Like A Virgin last week: the digitally remastered CD. I don't know how it compares to any prior version. But what do you think of the LP? If you were me, would you hang on to it? I ask, I suppose, because I retain some ambivalence about it.

nile's production is too corny. in comparison to into the groove, the whole album is just too bloated and sleepy. love don't live here anymore is cool. i don't need to hear material girl or dress you up or angel anytime soon.

at the time of release I thought her voice sounded really weird on LAV, helium-induced pitch compared to the debut. it's not my favorite nile rodgers production, not by a long shot, but tony thompson's drum-beat on the title track is absolutely classic.

in general the old girl's music hasn't aged well for this fan.

I always thought that her using Mirwais as a producer in 2004 was about as hip as using Nile Rodgers as a producer in 1984, i.e. not very.

music and american life both have their low points but a lot of people have let the lowness of those low points blind them to the high points - 'die another day', 'nothing fails', 'music', 'don't tell me' and several others off both albums are up there with madonna's best.

Mixed feelings. I like 1980s Madonna, don't really like post-1980s Madonna. But do I need a 1980s-Madonna LP, in full? I think I am attracted to the sound - the tinny keyboards and 'Billie Jean' guitar. But at times the sound also sounds cheap and thin - though I can also enjoy the thinness, as ... surprising minimalism?. Some great tracks: 'Material Girl', title track (I also like those drums on both), but also 'Angel' and - hidden highlight! - 'Dress You Up': love the first 30 seconds or so of this last. But I'm not sure about 'Love Don't Live Here' and surely the last 3 tracks (remixes aside) are just filler? Mixed feelings.

"Over and Over" is the secret highlight of Like a Virgin, almost as great as the obscure "Angel."

As for the rest of the second side, it's the worst of her career.

I like 'Angel' a lot, was surprised to read the other day that it was a hit 45, agree it should be on the radio. Not crazy for 'Over & Over'. But I can get along with the sound of these fast numbers. It's the ballads and pathos tracks that seem more flawed, perhaps.

The catch with "I'm Breathless," of course, is that it has Vogue on it. Still, D on that one.

And D: American Life. Music has "Don't Tell Me," at least.

S: everything else. I still feel her best album is the self-titled one. Fun from start to finish, and her most influential work for sure.

Madonna still needs to release a proper singles compilation, that is, a collection of the actual 7 inch mixes, the exact way they sounded when they were released as 7 inch singles back in the 80s.
