Whither Junkie XL?

Sure, rocky 'techno' might be the crassest and least necessary form of music ever, but "Billy Club" and "Saturday Teenage Kick" were kind of retarded fun. Where's the tulip-tiptoer now?

I agree the first album was pretty good. It equalled the Chemical Brothers' production values (is that rockist or what?!) and that's saying something. The second album was severly lacking in the tunes department. Junkie XL are still around, but it's now just a Tom Holkenborg solo show. More importantly, he's changed his style somewhat. Instead of big beat with rap and Hüsker Dü riffs, Junkie XL is now "progressive", i.e. trance with knobs ons. People who like that sort of thing seem to think he's doing alright.

Do you mean the Urban Dance Squad related band? Not my cupa tea (or techno). I prefered him in (the old) UDS.

Junkie XL?? He's released a litany of prog trance/prog house (take your pick) tracks. He's actually not my favorite producer of the stuff, but I see his name popping up on a regular basis in the dance community. To me, his stuff seems to attempt to straddle the line between thumpy, percussive prog house and more melodic prog trance - I think his stuff kinda falls short with respect to both....I don't feel he does either all that well.

I think "Big Sounds of the Drags" is an awesome album. In particular "Disco 2000" is a song I can't get enough of. His newer dance stuff doesn't grab me as much, but it's still better than alot of sound-alike junk swirling around out there.
