School Music Project 2002

I'm really enjoying the Langley School Music Project record. For those who haven't heard of it, it's a recording of an elementary school music class from the mid-70s full of spirited (and amateurish) versions of some good pop songs from the previous ten years.

My question is this: Suppose you were teaching a music class for 11-year old kids today. You’re going to teach them 12 songs or so for an upcoming recording session in the gymnasium. They have to be pop songs from the previous 10 years (back to 1992, say) that the kids would be likely to know, meaning, I guess, they have to have been played on the radio at some point.

What songs would you choose?

Everything sounds good on recorder! Actually, I wanted to say that in the flute thread.

Not just recorders - the song has to be just right for that crucial recorders + chime bars + snare drum that rattles + boomy bass drum + teacher's acoustic guitar combo.

Bootylicious,
Windowlicker, (I can just see whatever gawky baritones they'd have doing the "Uuhhhh" at the beginning)
Why does it always rain on me? (um, sorry?)

Great question! The tykes should perform these songs:

1) Tarwater "All of the Ants Left Paris" *** 2) The La's "Looking Glass" *** 3) The Lilac Time "The Nursery Walls" *** 4) Chappaquiddick Skyline "Everyone Else Is Evolving" *** 5) Clinic "The Return of Evil Bill" *** 6) Killing Joke "Requiem" *** 7) The Czars "Get Used To It" *** 8) His Name Is Alive "Can't Go Wrong Without You" *** 9) The Rock-A-Teens "HWY R" *** 10) Ian Brown "Stardust" 11) The Clientele "We Could Walk Together/Rain (medley)" 12) Nick Cave/Bad Seeds "Death Is Not The End" *** Hidden track: Pop Will Eat Itself "Ich Bin Ein Auslander"

Kids would love "The Robots," I'm sure of it. "Pump Up the Jam." Hell, "Regulate" would be amazing in this context. Matthew Sweet, "Girlfriend" - I have no idea why, but I can imagine it. DEFINTITELY "Unbelievable" by EMF - kids would have so much fun with it.
