getting away with things

Are there any musician's that because of the persona they developed, they can get away with things that otherwise would look bad? For example: A lot of the Ramones songs sound the same, but that's cool because it's the Ramones, or Momus can have some really goofy lyrics, but that's what Momus does. Also Prince is full of himself, Micheal Jackson acts like a kid, etc. Any comments on this?

So Solid Crew can get away with waving guns around in public, and violently assaulting 15 year old girls because if you don't like garage music, you're obviously a racist.

Judd Nelson, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As an addendum to my last post: the NME today played the "the only reason So Solid Crew get locked up isn't because they break the law, but because Britain is racialist". They may have had a point, if they hadn't had included a picture of the So Solids. Including three white members out of eight in the photo. Sheesh....

A) so solid don't "get away" with anything, judging by how much attention is paid to their misdeeds.

B) Often it is more dangerous to be integrated than black, at least in America.

Yeah Sterling has a point in that Skat D was tried and convicted and punished for punching out a 15 year old. He is a bad person for doing it but due process was followed. It's the stars whose misdeeds we don't hear about that are the problem surely?

actually my question is more about getting away with things musically.

A Nairn, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Judd clearly meant to say, "... if you don't like garage music, you're obviously a mentalist.

Billy Corgan gets away with being a whiney self-important twat? Kevin Shields gets away with being a non-productive meatbag? Trent Reznor gets away with being considered a musician?

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, you're talking about my musical heroes there. *cries*

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry.. bad moods will do that to me

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

FWIW Mr Shields is a hero of mine. But I don't aspire to his, umm, work ethic.

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i aspire to his work ethic

mark s, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Why is that Stephen Malkmus' lyrics are often described as stream of conciousness when in fact they're non-sensical.

MICHELINE, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i aspire to his work ethic

Yeah, I was about to say. It's very relaxed.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i thought that 'stream of consciousness' often = nonsensical

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Hey ho away we go...", not many musicians could get away with this as an opening line but NY pulls it off sort of

kiwi, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So James Joyce's Ulysses is non-sensical

Micheline, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

haven't read it

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mick Jagger's onstage prancing.

Mark M, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How is Trent not a musician?

bnw, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, I admire Kevin Shields' work ethic. I just wish I had it. Live a life of ecstasy and wine, and weed. Occasionally do a remix for someone when you're feeling bored. Live off of royalty checks. Amuse yourself by taunting the press as to the whereabouts of the follow-up album to Loveless. Have people talk about you in hushed voices as a fucking godlike force. Seems like a good life to me.

geeta, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Personal opinion of course, but I don't consider NIN to be particularly musical.

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A bit limiting. Isn't it more accurate to say that while he's clearly making music, it's not the kind of music you like?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes but that would involve being reasonable.

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 21 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hurrah! The joy of irrationality in the fit of passion. :-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 21 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

John Zorn gets away with churning out album after album of content-free dreck as he pretends to be writing "classical" music...

matthew m., Thursday, 21 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wow, Jim, that's catching. Paper-writing will do it to you, too.

matthew m., Thursday, 21 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is there any truth to the rampant rumours about Trent Reznor and 15 year old girls?

Judd Nelson, Thursday, 21 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, that's 14 year old goth girls. My friend Chris has that market sewn up.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 21 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)
