'She blew me away'

Are you fucking nuts?

Julio Desouza, Friday, 22 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

She's been around since 1993. "Dreams" from that year still her best song. ("Give Me A Little More Time" 's OK too, and the E17 thing). "Rise" = pants, hence perfect for Joolz.

I prefer 'Rise' to, say, 'I Will Survive', and I also lurve 'Dreams' and esp. 'When A Woman' - all great pop soul hits. Just call me fucking nuts!

She blew me away
Was there a giant blowdryer involved? ;-) She's okay, don't get me wrong, but uh...

'Just call me fucking nuts!'

No problem andrew.

Julio Desouza, Friday, 22 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Julio, To answer your question, "are you Fucking nuts?" I can't deny that, yes I may be a slight bit nuts. Thanks for your concern.

Jim Hargraves, Friday, 22 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Andrew,I suppose according to Julio we might start a club for "NUTS"

Jim Hargraves, Friday, 22 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Give Me A Little More Time" is absolutely sumptuous - one of the few examples of a perfectly executed pop period-piece. If Gabrielle had kept churning out tracks like that I think I might like her, but now she just treads that line between being weepy and "inspiring" = she's the black Dido.

Her garage remixes are uniformly wicked, though.

Tim, Friday, 22 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

[...] she's the black Dido.

That's one of the meanest things I've ever read!

I live to serve.

"When A Woman" (original unremixed) is a classic pop song.
"Sunshine" remixed by X-men (or Exemen if ya prefer) - touching UK Garage,
one of the better twee tunes on the scene.

tsk tsk tsk shameless you are

four years pass...
a lot of gabrielle songs have been cropping up on poptimists recently, and i was reminded of just how stellar her run of singles was. all but three (the last two and 'should i stay') of them are COMPLETELY CLASSIC!

the only ones I really like are Give Me A Little More Time and the Daft Punk remix of Forget About The World. uninspired cover of Walk On By, but i guess there's another 5 or 6 here that are tolerable. i absolutely loathe 'Rise' however.

Always cheers me up to be reminded of the take-no-prisoner firebrand that was the young Julio. "Are you fucking nuts?" - classic.

Nevertheless:

'rise' is the best kind of Unashamedly Inspirational Self-Empowerment pop in that it actually works, sorta. like 'unpretty'.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 31 March 2006 14:29 (twenty years ago)

it was just 'Knockin On Heaven's Door' but less imaginative OR soulful. no better than Lighthouse Family.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 31 March 2006 14:31 (twenty years ago)

I don't really like 'Unpretty' either, although 'Dear Lie' is okay.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 31 March 2006 14:31 (twenty years ago)

oh i hate 'knockin' on heaven's door' obv, disgusting! lighthouse family weren't violently offensive either but his voice was a bit grating whereas gabrielle's was lovely and soothing.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 31 March 2006 14:33 (twenty years ago)

"Give Me A Little More Time" was a genuinely good pop single. But most of the rest of it is Two Ronnies music.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 31 March 2006 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Gabrielle's way of extending any 'eh' pronunciation into a weird prolonged whine was the only thing that really made her stand out.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 31 March 2006 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Apart from the Momus ripoff.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 31 March 2006 14:38 (twenty years ago)

what about 'dreams' marcello? yeah, i admit the self-empowerment towards the end might be annoying to some (others), and maybe no one remembers some of the less successful classics like 'forget about the world', but 'dreams' is one of the pinnacles of pop.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 31 March 2006 14:40 (twenty years ago)

It's certainly one of the pissholes of pop. You might as well put on the Tracy Chapman original and read Jo Cameron's blog aloud over it.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 31 March 2006 14:43 (twenty years ago)

'Fast Car' > 'Dreams'

altho i suppose 'Fast Car' is more indie
