OMFG! I ran into someone last evening who asked me to make him a CD of French songs done by English-speaking artists. Well, I don't have many yet (except for Pop Romantique compilation) but here's what I have (besides those already listed):
La Folie - Stranglers
Honi Soit - John Cale
La Mer - Jazz Butcher
(+ Others that were written in French & covered by English-speaking bands
Bonnie & Clyde/Luna
Ca Plane Por Moi/Sonic Youth.)

Dostoyevsky - all of his books have that whole French thing going on in some way or another. Nah, he didn't sing, but here's to guessing there was some spoken-word musicality as he dictated to his wife.

anthony, Friday, 22 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anthony isn't that german lyrics sung by French people? Oh it's all so confusing. Especially when they start singing Japanese.

Sting - "Hungry for you" with the Police and "La Belle Dame Sans Regrets" from Mercury Falling...he should regret that one, indeed.

Arch Ibog, Friday, 22 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The obvious one has been overlooked: "Voulez vous coucher avec moi ce soir?"

nathalie, Friday, 22 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"I Love Paris", Screamin Jay Hawkins. Though there's just as much fake Chinese as French in that one.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 22 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kylie - "Je Ne Sais Pous Porquoi" (I can't spell French, but oui!) Pulp - Manon (non. very non.)

There was a truly dire French cover version of "Blue Monday" called "Lundi Bleu" released about 10 years ago by an obscure smartarse Manchester band who i can't remember the name of.

tacit, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

that would be The Times (who, consisting of Edward Ball, are generally pretty awful)

The Plan - Mon Amour!

, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

haha... this thread has come full circle - i think 'mon amour' was the song that inspired it :). actually as i type i realise this is a lie, it was in fact inspired by 'lauren caught my eye' by the crash
but 'mon amour' is a great song... better than 'lauren caught my eye'.

Isobel Campbell singing "Poupee de Cire, Poupee de Son" during the Black Sessions. I'm still unsure as to whether I approve or not, but her pathetic giggling apology afterwards is swaying me to the side of not.

the whole él records thing was very continental, or sort of nostalgic mock-continental, so their appropriation of french had a point to it beyond ooh how cute we're singing in french. ok, well it was kind of ooh how cute we're singing in french but with it actually did something with that concept.

how about non-french lyrics by french singers? phoenix/air/daft punk classic obv. and france galls "merci, herr marquis" is uber-classic (france gall in german is pretty great overall). serge gainsbourg's franglais is pretty amusing as well.

"Avril en Mai" by Apples in Stereo (and many others on the Pop Romantique comp) get my OUI!

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Monday, 13 September 2004 05:12 (twenty-one years ago)

'The Paris Match' and 'Down in the seine' are beautiful songs, but Weller's voice is reminiscent of a twelve-year-old boy in French class trying too hard and consequently sounding more cockney-home-counties than ever. Not the most pleasing aspect of those songs, lovely as they are.

i like that fairport convention dylan cover in french!
