Never had to contend with much serious theft in my 20-odd years collecting records, but this hurt. One wooden case, about 25 discs, I can't remember all of them even looking at the empty gaps in my collection but here we go.

I have already called a bunch of local and in-state stores, but I know there are folks on this board who work in stores also so please note this. Some of these seem to be extremely unavailable at this point and if there is anyone who can get me CDR copies please email me offthread. I will trade or pay postage. No MP3s pleez.

O Yuki Conjugate - Into Dark Waters CD (cannot BELIEVE this exquisite disc is currently oop)

Nocturnal Emissions - Stoneface/Spiritflesh (ditto)

Rafael Toral - Aeriola Frequencies

Vladislav Delay - Multila (sob)

Zoviet France - What Is Not True (sob)

Nurse With Wound - Soliloqy For Lilith 2CD

then there are these other discs which were also taken but which I can get again, I am posting these to aid in possible identification in stores:

James Brown - Star Time discs 2 and 3 ONLY
The Orb - Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld 2CD in slipcase
Fannypack - promo copy of See You Next Tuesday
Eyvind Kang - Live Low To The Earth In The Iron Age
Aeolian String Ensemble - Lassithi/Elysium
V/A - Warp Sampler
DJ Rolando - Aztec Mystery Mix
V/A - Funky Stuff
Bar-Kays - Best Of

I live in Eugene, Oregon. The incident number assigned by Lane County Sheriff is LS060713046726.

Any help appreciated... and leave those jewel cases at home when attending festivals! I sure learned the hard way...

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 17 July 2006 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

thanks, Billy!

It was the Warp 10th anniversary single-disc sampler. just a promo, no big deal.

Hey Sleeve.

I work out at CD World in Eugene. If I see any of these titles come through, I'll let you know ASAP. You can bet I'd be on the lookout for any used NWW or Zoviet France in any case ;)

Much appreciated, V.

I had a few hundred records stolen from me by a housemate who sold them to by crack rocks, back in about 1993. I had dreams about strangling him for years afterward.

Shoes say, yeah, no hands clap your good bra. (goodbra), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 03:48 (nineteen years ago)

However, the moral of the story is that I've replaced almost every single stolen disc (although some of the vinyl hadda be replaced by CD). Just a week or so ago, I replaced my treasured first Of Cabs & Kings EP with a CD reish from Amazon for like $1.50. Very satisfying, as it's probably the last one that was nagging at me. (I'm not 100% positive I didn't myself sell all of my 23 Skidoo & Snakefinger collections, for instance.)

I got curious about related threads...

I've just had a 5O-CD wallet stolen from my bag in the office

How much do you say your stolen, out of print, jazz CDs are worth in a police report?

I already re-bought two of the discs that I am afraid will be OOP soon (Eyvind Kang and Aeolian String Ensemble). However, the possibility of ever replacing the actual Zoviet France CD seems slim at best (barring reissues). And WTF is up with those O Yuki and V. Delay discs being impossible to find? Tragic!

Smallfish records had the Nurse with Wound in on sale a couple of weeks ago - They're online and you should be able to order it from them http:\\www.smallfish.net

ah, it was reissued by Jnana! Since I'm in the US I can get it from them. $40 postpaid.

thanks, I didn't know that. I'd be interested in a demographic overview of the formats used.

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 02:20 (nineteen years ago)

It ain't a lot, but I've picked up some .flac stuff. Mostly live recordings, ironically.

I'm sorry about your stolen CDs, sleeve. That's a drag. Good luck recovering them!

The only ones I could help you with are the Star Time discs, but I see Billy Dods has already offered them. I can, however, help you out with some information about lossless audio file formats. http://www.cheesebuerger.de/images/smilie/froehlich/g015.gif

FLAC is the standard lossless format used these days. Well, pretty much, anyway. I don't know why anyone bothers encoding in clunky ol' SHN anymore, but some still do. *shrug* Here is a link to an informative page about FLAC from the EtreeWiki and a link to the FLAC homepage on sourceforge. You'll find information on FLAC's features, comparisons to other lossless formats and download links for Windows, Mac and Linux there.

You can play your lossless FLAC, SHN and APE (a.k.a. Monkey's Audio—another lossless format, which compresses WAV files smaller than FLAC can) files using foobar2000, Winamp or VLC Media Player. After installing the lossless audio codecs you wish to use, you'll just need to download and install the FLAC/SHN/APE plug-ins for whichever player(s) you choose. foobar2000 is my personal favorite since it's so versatile and simple to use. It can even burn CDs (never tried that feature myself since I have Nero). Also, even though foobar2000 can decode lossless files to WAV and encode WAV to lossless, I always use FLAC Frontend to encode/decode FLAC files and Trader's Little Helper for the rest. Trader's Little Helper is a marvelous little program. I use it all the time because it can:

· Verify checksum files (md5 signature, FLAC fingerprint, shntool md5 fingerprint)
· Create checksum files (md5 signature, FLAC fingerprint, shntool md5 fingerprint)
· Test/Verify FLAC, SHN and APE files
· List audio file details
· Fix sector boundary errors
· Decode FLAC, SHN and APE files to WAV format
· Encode WAV files to FLAC, SHN or APE format

Very handy! Especially if you download/collect/trade lossless live audio recordings... like me. :)

Oh, one more tip:
If you are going to look on slsk, make sure to include "FLAC" or "SHN" in your search terms. I've found it very tough to find lossless files of specific bands or artists' music otherwise. Too many of those damn MP3s out there to clutter up your search results! http://www.cheesebuerger.de/images/smilie/frech/p031.gif

Hope this info is helpful to you, sleeve.

Mama Roux (Mama Roux), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks! On my Mac I use xACT which I am very happy with, it's basically Trader's Little Helper w/Mac binaries.

I got my incident report from the sheriff today and will find out fairly soon whether my home insurance will cover $50 Nocturnal Emissions CDs.

sleeve (sleeve), Thursday, 20 July 2006 00:14 (nineteen years ago)

Ha! Just checked Amazon and re-bought it for 16 bucks. Probably one of my favorite "ambient" type discs ever, basking in its glorious vibes is essential to my peace of mind at times.

sleeve (sleeve), Thursday, 20 July 2006 00:25 (nineteen years ago)

The Nocturnal Emissions disc, that is.

sleeve (sleeve), Thursday, 20 July 2006 00:25 (nineteen years ago)

i can rip an ISO of the o yuki conjugate CD for you, if you'd like. shouldn't take too long to download if you've got a cable modem or better.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Thursday, 20 July 2006 02:05 (nineteen years ago)

I think I also got that through Amazon ($16 again, whew), I'll let you know if something falls through.

On a more hair-pulling note, I just remembered another stolen disc, which is the Pop CD by Gas. Totally out of print, of course. Fuck. I forget the name of the distro that collapsed and took Mille Plateaux with it, but I hate them.

sleeve (sleeve), Thursday, 20 July 2006 04:08 (nineteen years ago)

UPDATE: Discs have been found! Safe and sound under a bunch of paint cans in a different part of the festival grounds than where they were put away, ten days later.

Thanks to Billy Dods for the offer of help.

This experience has convinced me that I have to back up my entire CD collection as flacs on DVDs and put them in a safe deposit box somewhere. Or at least back up the ones I take anywhere. It's ridiculous how much semi-recent stuff is out of print in these days of "everything supposedly being available."

sleeve (sleeve), Monday, 31 July 2006 02:27 (nineteen years ago)

three years pass...

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit. Before I moved city a month ago, I boxed up my entire CD collection. Just found out my fucking junkie bitch sister stole them all, about 500 CDs. :( :( :(

More than that, probably.

Any chance you can get her to cough up where she sold them to?

Stillborn birth of a display name (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 17:24 (sixteen years ago)

As if I have enough spare change at hand to buy one of them back, let alone all of them. Besides, it sounds like this happened a month ago, because my mom thought I took them with me when I moved.

on a top secret challops mission in contraristan (The Reverend), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 17:31 (sixteen years ago)

daaamn that sucks

the CDs I started this thread about were found on our work site in the office, buried behind some boxes after we had a post-event cleanup. I never bring very many real CDs anywhere anymore, though.

sleeve, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 17:36 (sixteen years ago)

And even if I could convince the store to give them back, they're about 200 miles away.

on a top secret challops mission in contraristan (The Reverend), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 17:40 (sixteen years ago)

Damn. What the hell does your sister say about it?

krakow, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 20:58 (sixteen years ago)

You live in Portland now. Time to start buying records! (ps - sorry to hear about your loss)

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 21:14 (sixteen years ago)

Jesus Christ, 500 CDs... Very sorry to hear that. I assume you still have music (ie LPs) to listen to?

Duke, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 21:42 (sixteen years ago)

krakow: I don't know, I have very consciously not talked to her since I moved.

I have a phono back at home, but no working receiver, and probably won't at any time in the future, due to the fact that I barely used it anyway.

As of now, I'm all mp3.

"Home" meaning my parents house, north of Seattle.

on a top secret challops mission in contraristan (The Reverend), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 21:58 (sixteen years ago)

I haven't bought music in physical format in about 2 years anyway, and don't really plan to in the future, but you know, it would be nice to have what I did have not fucking stolen from me by my own damn sister.

on a top secret challops mission in contraristan (The Reverend), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 21:59 (sixteen years ago)

A year and a half, I guess. Last CD I bought was the Portishead joint.
