When I am driving through the American hinterlands, only able to pick up one dusty 70's station, please please please please for the love of god stop taking it to the limit

(i don't expect this thread to generate...just wanted to get that out)

J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Thursday, 20 July 2006 04:00 (nineteen years ago)

haha 'take it to the limit' has recently entered my 'eagles songs i have somehow gradually acquired a fondness for despite generally despising the eagles' stable.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 20 July 2006 04:02 (nineteen years ago)

I would say: "Hey guys...uh, are ya holdin'?"

Monty Von Byonga (Monty Von Byonga), Thursday, 20 July 2006 04:38 (nineteen years ago)

how many of you slept with reagan's daughter???
did you really ask Richard Thompson to join your band???
how many songs/arrangements did you "borrow" from Iain Matthews????

timmy tannin (pompous), Thursday, 20 July 2006 04:57 (nineteen years ago)

I would say - You guys rock but "Take It to The Limit" is definitely your worst fuckin song -- HATE that maudlin shit. The rest of the stuff I love unequivocally though.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 20 July 2006 05:02 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, Stormy.

A Viking of Some Sadness (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 20 July 2006 05:34 (nineteen years ago)

"Take It to The Limit" is definitely your worst fuckin song -- HATE that maudlin shit. The rest of the stuff I love unequivocally though

i would argue that the Eag's have more than one mawkish track in their arsenal...timothy b. schmit being personally responsible for 94.7%

J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Thursday, 20 July 2006 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

"Dudes, just let Joe Walsh write everythink"

Annie Get Your Gin (noodle vague), Thursday, 20 July 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

Justin Timberlake's favourite band ever, you know?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 20 July 2006 14:07 (nineteen years ago)

does a punch to their collective gut count as a "statement"?

Rev. PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie 2), Thursday, 20 July 2006 14:37 (nineteen years ago)

"I'm sorry I had to do this. Say hi to Satan."

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 20 July 2006 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

actually I know a whole crapload of Eagles songs and like them okay enough I guess, I've defended them while drunkened, carry on

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 20 July 2006 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

how many songs/arrangements did you "borrow" from Iain Matthews????

I'm intrigued by this statement. I heard that Matthews did a few West Coast-type records. Is this true? What titles? I'd love to hear 'em.

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Thursday, 20 July 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

Haikunym wins.

J Arthur Rank (Quin Tillian), Thursday, 20 July 2006 15:13 (nineteen years ago)

Only real pricks would boot Don Felder from the band at this point.

i'll mitya halfway (mitya), Thursday, 20 July 2006 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

i'll mitya halfway (mitya), Thursday, 20 July 2006 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

also, fellas, would you free my Dad's soul from the grip of your stellar harmonies? 'take it easy' will signal the apocalypse

J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Thursday, 20 July 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

DAVE Q TO THREAD PRONTO

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 20 July 2006 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

Matthews moved to LA in the very early 70s and was making albums and doing gigs. Frey/Henley were Fairport fans (see also the Thompson invite) and probably went to some of his shows & bought his records (maybe they knew him socially as well, dunno).the Eagles used his exact arrangement of Seven Bridges Road a few years later. Also, I think Matthews covered Ol' 55 first, but I could be wrong. Anyway, there is a comp called theSoul Of many Places which is very good sampler from this period. Individual albums are Some Days You Eat the Bear and Valley Hi (produced by Mike Nesmith!)
xpost

timmy tannin (pompous), Thursday, 20 July 2006 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks. Now I have something to track down.

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Thursday, 20 July 2006 15:36 (nineteen years ago)

"You know what I love guys? Being in a nice quiet bar and then hearing 'Hotel California' come on over the stereo. Someone always shouts to turn it up, and all the grey-hairs in the place start swaying wisfully and singing along. It always turns into a dull roar by the first chorus, and by the end, I can hardly hear my heart beating above the din of old drunken losers singing along. That is really the best.

Now, do you want to meet the .22 or the .45?"

trees (treesessplode), Thursday, 20 July 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

"Do you lose much sleep over people who bash you by parroting critical stances they copped from a long-dead 70's rock critic? Yeah, I didn't think so, just checkin'"

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Thursday, 20 July 2006 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone familiar with the other Eagles who sang Tryin' to Get to You? Country Rock at it's best for sure.

Rev. PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie 2), Thursday, 20 July 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

oh, many people still parrot the musings of one not-quite-dead rock critic when it comes to the Eagles.

timmy tannin (pompous), Thursday, 20 July 2006 19:09 (nineteen years ago)

xgau ain't dead thom!

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 20 July 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

Why won't you stop touring and making yourselves look like assholes, when it was perfectly acceptable retiring after a run of really great singles and albums? (Yes, I think Hotel California and The Long Run are terrific.)

O'Connor (OConnorScribe), Thursday, 20 July 2006 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

haha jb yr rite, yr rite - I am generally more xgau-sympathetic than other ppl round these parts but he sure does hate him some eagles - my opinion about eagles-hate is "surely there's a lot of things more worthy of spite than talented session dudes & their quite sweet harmonizing"

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Thursday, 20 July 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

"surely there's a lot of things more worthy of spite than talented session dudes & their quite sweet harmonizing"

so true. shucks. but they took it to the limit about 73 times too many on the outro...with tiny tim schmit in the background doing his worst joni mitchel

J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Thursday, 20 July 2006 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

Besides the hits, I really know nothing about the Eagles. Are the early records good or what? If I'm digging the Stone Canyon Band should I get thoe first few LPs?

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Thursday, 20 July 2006 20:46 (nineteen years ago)

"i don't care about you one way or the other, fellas"

gear (gear), Thursday, 20 July 2006 20:50 (nineteen years ago)

"Do you lose much sleep over people who bash you by parroting critical stances they copped from a long-dead 70's rock critic? Yeah, I didn't think so, just checkin'"

I don't think they do, either, Mr. Tallis. But just because it's parroting doesn't mean it isn't true. The Eagles are TEH WORST. I think I can say that I hate them more than any other band I've ever hated. And now I'm done with this thread.

trees (treesessplode), Thursday, 20 July 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

what about people who Parrot the Eagles? Cardinal sin? or Fledgling mistake?

J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Thursday, 20 July 2006 21:16 (nineteen years ago)

with tiny tim schmit in the background doing his worst joni mitchel

That's Randy Meisner taking it to the limit there. Schmit wasn't around then.

Fsck Washing Ong's Hat (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 20 July 2006 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone hear the Willie & Waylon version of it? I was always curious...

Fsck Washing Ong's Hat (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 20 July 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

yeah there's also the fact that lots & lots of prominent rock & country songwriters have nothing but respect for the Eagles - they know their way into & out of a hook pretty beautifully - sure you can hate their vibe, why not, but it's one of the most distinctive, immediately recognizable vibes in music

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Thursday, 20 July 2006 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

Tallis, I agree about the recognizability of their vibe. It just makes me want to fucking kill.

trees (treesessplode), Thursday, 20 July 2006 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

like the Disco Strangler?

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 20 July 2006 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

sarah dougher does a version too but i think she basically scraps the melody. i used to really really really despise the eagles too like few other bands, i think that i'm not nearly as constantly exposed to it as i used to be - i don't hear them on classic rock or country radio anywhere approaching as much as i used to - has helped dampen my venom, that and the maturity/wisdom/clarity that makes it hard for me to really really really despise any rock band. that plus getting older and gaining a greater sympathy toward laid back l.a. sound stuff (same thing has happened to me in regards to general late 60s/early 70s hippie bullshit too). it helps ALOT too that glenn frey and don henley basicaly aren't around anymore to remind me 'o, that's right - those guys were huge douchebags'. as various 'america's beatles' go i still opt for the commodores over them though.

xpost thomas pretty obv otm - they don't have the biggest selling album of all time for no reason

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 20 July 2006 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

o man another thing i'd say is i'd ask don henley if his ny dolls hate is somehow specifically tied into the xgau slam or if that's just one hell of a coincidence. and if he met jimmy carter. and what stevie nicks was like in bed (i know for a fact no way i would let that lady tie me up).

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 20 July 2006 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno, Christgau's Eagles hate is complex. He acknowledges that he hates the music even though the music gives him pleasure. And he gave most of their albums B's and C's.

Sundar (sundar), Thursday, 20 July 2006 21:43 (nineteen years ago)

Jackson Browne had a solo version of "Take It Easy" closing out his recent live acoustic album - I love the hell outta Jackson Browne, so I'm biased, but as a reading of the song it sorta sanded off all the irritants & located a rather pretty, somewhat mournful tone underneath the lightness

xpost I get giggles every time I read that "another thing that interests me about the Eagles is that I hate them," like unstoppable giggles

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Thursday, 20 July 2006 21:44 (nineteen years ago)

To be fair, Christgau is a big fucking dick.

Annie Get Your Gin (noodle vague), Thursday, 20 July 2006 21:47 (nineteen years ago)

I also wonder whether Xgau's reaction to the Eagles isn't somewhat rooted in east coast/west coast ideological beef: people weren't moving to Wmsbrg (or Manhattan) in droves when the Eagles were on the come-up

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Thursday, 20 July 2006 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

but man aren't his sentences interesting to parse?!!?!

gear (gear), Thursday, 20 July 2006 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe cause he wrote the song and he's a hell of a singer and songwriter.

Roy Kasten (Roy Kasten), Thursday, 20 July 2006 22:00 (nineteen years ago)

haha pretty sure thom is all too too aware of that

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 20 July 2006 22:02 (nineteen years ago)

(See, this is sort of my eternal dilemma with Christgau. On one level, it seems like it would be more reasonable and less pretentious to just say something like "The music's really tight but their lyrics are kind of misogynist." Yet I remain fascinated by, and continue to be drawn to, all of his convoluted syntax and circuitous rationalizations.)

I'd probably say something like "I really liked 'Witchy Woman' and 'New Kid In Town'" before I cut to the chase and asked about Stevie Nicks.

Sundar (sundar), Thursday, 20 July 2006 22:02 (nineteen years ago)

I get giggles every time I read that "another thing that interests me about the Eagles is that I hate them," like unstoppable giggles

I hurt myself when I read this.

cosmo vitelli (cosmo vitelli), Thursday, 20 July 2006 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

o man the seinfeld episode i'd ask them about that too

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 20 July 2006 22:07 (nineteen years ago)

Whenever I even hear The Eagles mentioned the first association I make is Elaine singing Witchy Woman.

cosmo vitelli (cosmo vitelli), Thursday, 20 July 2006 22:08 (nineteen years ago)

"Oh, you mean 'Wit-chay Woman.'"

xpost!

Sundar (sundar), Thursday, 20 July 2006 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

i personaly didn't want to address the erotic irony of xgau in relation to the eagles, but it has generated great discussion, and i have to concede that the whole mess of them know the formula for radio play...but how about taking it to the limit once, glancing at each other, turning down the amps, and walking out...the limit has long ago been adulterated and left in the california sun to dry.

J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Thursday, 20 July 2006 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

now that I think about it I might just say "hey can you guys float me a loan, seeing as you have all that money"

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Thursday, 20 July 2006 23:05 (nineteen years ago)

"Don, aside from the New York Dolls, all rock critics dead & alive, Joe Strummer, record company executives, and all representatives of the news media...who do you really hate?"

Monty Von Byonga (Monty Von Byonga), Thursday, 20 July 2006 23:12 (nineteen years ago)

The Eagles make perfect sense if you imagine their songs as written from the viewpoint of a coked-up LA man-whore, driving his Jag at near-insane speeds as he does lines off the chest of his underage girlfriend. It's California decadence at its finest. I have to admit they know their way around a hook, and despite myself whenever I hear "Take It Easy" I turn the volume knob to 11. Good band made of terrible people.

Ice Cream Electric (Ice Cream Electric), Thursday, 20 July 2006 23:15 (nineteen years ago)

"Why not 'Beagles'?"

Butt Dickiss (Dick Butkus), Thursday, 20 July 2006 23:22 (nineteen years ago)

"What is reality?"

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Thursday, 20 July 2006 23:31 (nineteen years ago)

Well, I just learned something new: I had no idea whatsoever that the Eagles were Fairport fans.

What would I ask? Maybe something like, "You know, you guys were actually exposed to some decent music. You've covered Tom Waits, you apparently liked Fairport Convention, and one could argue that your whole sound was initially based on Gram Parsons' solo and FBB albums. What went wrong? How did it end in 'Get Over It?'"

Follow-up question: "It was too much coke, wasn't it?"

Maybe something about Sheila Behman's version of "Desperado" if I haven't already been thrown out.
