Rap Emotions Redux

Listening to Ghostface Killah's "Child's Play" of Supreme Clientele, I'm ambushed by unexpected emotion. So I know we've covered some of this ground before, but along with that there's one of history's great lovesongs on Mystikal's Tarantula ("Go Head") and actually I think there's more emotion that can be expressed in these songs -- more lyrical directness which can get away with intimate stories without turning twee. Particularly affecting trax for you? Reliant on detail or generalities? Could rock songs deal with the same thematic matter?

thematic matter = ?

Sterling, expand!

ghost has always been the most emotionally complex wu member, this resonance is helped by being their best storyteller also.

thematic matter = that of whatever you wish to discuss. In Child's Play, he's reminiscing about his girl, and being young and screwing and then hinting at some dire consequences which were to come.

Sterling Clover, Friday, 22 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

generalities = cheese
details = (m[eat)y]

(which is why "Wildflower" goes way beyond "offensive" and into Eminem-style emotional psychosis. the pain of maintaining his arrogance ambushes me every time i hear it)

the 11th track on el-producto's forthcoming full-length is one of the most affecting love songs i've ever heard.

but then, i AM a fuck up

Eminem-style emotional psychosis

Meaning it's more boring than a six-album Rick Wakeman solo box set?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 22 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is funny because I was about to start a thread about this exact song about a month ago. I can't think of a more depressing hiphop song, not that I know my stuff regarding hiphop.

Er so I guess I'm just answering Sterling with a large "I AGREE". I can't think of many rock songs which deal with anything directly. In fact the only band I've liked that ever told the fucking truth were Spiritualized.

Why are lyrical directness and storytelling ability good things?

Clarke B., Saturday, 23 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well most bands can't pull off lyrical directness without sounding like tossers, so I guess it says something about the music. As for storytelling, I'm not so sure.

Ronan, Saturday, 23 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Spiritualised: They don't tell the truth. Richard Yates tells the God damn boring truth. All those Uncut/Middle America Haters hate Richard Yates but he's written my Goddamn novel and I think he's brilliant. Sorry Ronan.

fuck, what's the point., Saturday, 23 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can't listen to too much hip hop sometimes because I can only listen to people saying what they mean for so long.

(Though I don't really know what I mean by "too much" because sometimes I listen to nothing but for days on end...I doubt my sanity on those days.)

Just about every track on Blackalicious's Nia does it for me.

Damn straight! Blazing Arrow does it for me, too, though. That right there is one group to watch in the years to come!

De La Soul, "Trying People,"
Definite emotion wave. Wisdom isn't intentional, it
just happens. I think children's choirs are usually
so gauche or manipulative, but not here.
