what music makes you think, "this music was made by and/or appeals most strongly to assholes"?

Limp Bizkit was the first that came to mind.

re-read original post. Shostakovich did write music for an asshole (Stalin) but: "this music was made by and/or appeals most strongly to assholes"? Won't fit.

ok the cat's outta the bag -- i did do an earlier thread on this same exact topic almost 4 years ago. since so much has changed since then and now -- and we have a lot of new folks -- i thought that it would be fun to create a brand new thread about "music for assholes." i did a new thread b/c i didn't want past results to skew present answers (trying to be pseudo-scientific here), but alas ... :-)

the doaple gonger (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

I feel like there's this blurring going on between "people I think are lame" and "people who are actually mean and are dicks."

The former usage makes the question pointless, whereas the latter's totally fascinating: there are times when I think Social Distortion is pretty okay, but there's no question in my mind that it appeals to huge numbers of total assholes. Also: Pearl Jam's fanbase seems to include a lot of people who manage to simultaneously be total assholes and also earnestly lame. And there's a realm of MOR popular "hard rock" that always feels this way to me, from dudes who still like Bon Jovi to Nickelback or whatever. Too many people like both of those acts for them all to be assholes, but I'll bet a high proportion of guys who think they're really awesome are kind of assholey.

The definition of "asshole" I'm working on there is pretty male-centric, obviously.

Nabisco, believe you me, I was going by the latter definition with my lists. I guess the one imprecise one was Sonic Youth--I really mean "people who like the SYR records."

Eppy (Eppy), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

I still think my answer of "street punk", if yr at all familiar with it, is the totes right answer.

I'm a peaceable person - I try to avoid assholes. But I work with lots of music as part of my job, and an evil part of me likes to surf the 'net looking for something a true asshole might "enjoy". Something tells me that real assholes don't enjoy music, they use it to think they are this, that or the other.
