Eavis also hinted at a surprise performance from a band who haven't played together for 35 years on the Friday night.

He added: "At the time they were one of the biggest bands in the world. No one can guess who they are, it's a lovely mystery.

"They will play on the Friday night, either the penultimate or two down from the top on the billing."

Paul and Ringo reunited!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 24 July 2006 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

Check the Genesis reunited thread, they are having a guess it's umm...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 24 July 2006 11:54 (nineteen years ago)

I hate it when Eavis does this crap because empthasis on headliners should be totally discouraged. it's not as if he'll really have trouble selling tickets regardless of who plays.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 24 July 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

Seems unlikely to be Genesis, if it's 2nd or 3rd on the bill. If it is, I'll have to go to glastonbury, oh no.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 24 July 2006 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

I hate it when Eavis does this crap because empthasis on headliners should be totally discouraged.

Why should it be discouraged? I love the whole 'guess the lineup' aspect to Glasto.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 24 July 2006 12:20 (nineteen years ago)

Aye, if he said 35 years it isn't Genesis, Gabriel left in 1975.

StanM (StanM), Monday, 24 July 2006 12:20 (nineteen years ago)

Why should it be discouraged? I love the whole 'guess the lineup' aspect to Glasto.

because who really gives a shit who headlines? there's all that other, better stuff going on.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 24 July 2006 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

if it's gabriel-era genesis i'd doubt they'd be 2nd or 3rd on the bill on a friday to the arctic monkeys or whoever. i mean phil collins was in them right?

the percentage of 40-somethings there wiuld certainly be up on last year.

pisces (piscesx), Monday, 24 July 2006 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

oh yay!

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 24 July 2006 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

because who really gives a shit who headlines? there's all that other, better stuff going on

Loads of people care! Possibly the only reason you or I don't is because of how poor most of the headliners are. But the headline set still feels like more of an event - I'd rather see a band I love play at 10pm on Saturday than seeing them at 3pm on the Friday. It just feels different, and I reckon bands pull out all the stops for the headline set in a way they don't otherwise.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 24 July 2006 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

Who else could it be then? Faces? Yardbirds?

StanM (StanM), Monday, 24 July 2006 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

Hale and Paice and Lord.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 24 July 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

Loads of people care!

to them Glastonbury is just another festival perhaps, like Reading or whatever.

i'm not sure why i'm being so purist about it mind you. not sure i'll go again yet.

I'd rather see a band I love play at 10pm on Saturday than seeing them at 3pm on the Friday. It just feels different, and I reckon bands pull out all the stops for the headline set in a way they don't otherwise.

when did this last happen? assuming we're still talking main stagers.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 24 July 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

Basement Jaxx last year probably. There was a general feeling that this was their Biggest Gig Ever and they were going to fucking rock it and play ever big single that everyone wanted to hear, plus other random things thrown in (Can't Get You Out Of My Head, Ace of Spades sampling thing etc). That just wasn't there in 2005 (even though they were awesome on the Other Stage that year).

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 24 July 2006 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

I forget they filled in for Kylie last year. I watched some of it on TV (inc. the Kylie cover tho like Coldplay's this was rub). I thought they were great in 2004. But they're not a band Eavis would really mention in order to excite people who actually decide whether or not they go to Glastonbury based on who the main stage headliners are (maybe these people don't exist but this media hype about headliners seems to suggest they might).

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 24 July 2006 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

"Gentle Giant", I reckons.

Michael Eavis, yesterday...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 09:17 (nineteen years ago)

OH SHIT, IT'S SOLD OUT ALREADY.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 11:31 (nineteen years ago)

Can? With Damo?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 08:44 (nineteen years ago)

Creedence Clearwater Revival?
Derek & The Dominos?

StanM (StanM), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 09:06 (nineteen years ago)

(hmmm. D&D is pretty unlikely, most of them are dead or institutionalised)

StanM (StanM), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 09:08 (nineteen years ago)

Bob Dylan and the Band, with Eric Clapton

Graham Baker (gbaker_lowside), Thursday, 27 July 2006 20:19 (nineteen years ago)

Is there seriously anyone who hasn't played in 35 years that you'd pay 2 pounds to see? 3 pounds for anyone 25 years ago? For christ's sake, what a nasty promotion...

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 28 July 2006 00:27 (nineteen years ago)

KT Bush Band - Hasn't played in 30 years or so and I'd pay three figures to see them.

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Friday, 28 July 2006 10:26 (nineteen years ago)

Scott Walker, obviously.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:43 (nineteen years ago)

So whos starting The Walker Brothers reunion stories then?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 28 July 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

five months pass...
http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/Music/01/04/music.police.reut/index.html

so I guess it's the Police

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 4 January 2007 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

But they weren't around 35 years ago, kyle. Plus if it's the Police it wouldn't be much of a surprise, as it seems to be nearly-common knowledge among us types that they'll tour this summer.

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Thursday, 4 January 2007 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

I heard the GENESIS rumour being propagated at the weekend.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 4 January 2007 22:13 (nineteen years ago)

that's not news though, they've already annouced a reformation, and it's definitely not the original lineup (no hackett/gabriel) unless they're keeping it really hush.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 4 January 2007 22:31 (nineteen years ago)

I heard that it is almost definitely the Clash finally reuniting. Supported by the Smashing Pumpkins.

The Ultimate Conclusion (lokar), Friday, 5 January 2007 00:38 (nineteen years ago)

I'd swim over there to catch Scott Walker. But it would most likely be the Walker Brothers instead.

Dags (Dags), Friday, 5 January 2007 00:50 (nineteen years ago)

Well I won't be there.

The Real Dirty Vicar (dirtyvicar), Friday, 5 January 2007 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

no Afro-Celt no credibility

blueski, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:07 (nineteen years ago)

ah!

Credence Clearwater Revival (John Fogerty)

The Thot Plickens.

Mark G, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

Glastonbury booking policy: look in Q/ NME/ Word magazine from the past 12 months if artist isn't mentioned don't book them.

Glastonbury line up is dull compared to some European festivals that have more esoteric and diverse line ups.

djmartian, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

Shirley Bassey and Smokey Robinson for the Sunday afternoon slot would seem to be a given. And OMG Bjork that would be awesome. As would the Stooges.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

Martian you have clearly never been to Glasto because that "booking policy" is utter bollocks.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

Matt DC - I am talking about 2007 and applying those artists to my hypothetical magazines test.

Emily Eavis sticks her beak into the booking policy - she obviously doesn't read The Wire, Terrorizer and Rock-A-Rolla for booking ideas.

djmartian, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

I hear Benjamin Mwaruwari is bringing is dancehall act to the Jazz World stage though.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

admit it, the music at glastonbury gets more establishment each year. Many of those artists above can be heard on that mainstream rock station Virgin.

djmartian, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

Cud?

I am now not too bothered I couldn't afford a ticket.

Although Smokey Robinson, that would be cool.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

what proportion of the bands at glastonbury would it be acceptable to have been played on Virgin?

Alan, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:33 (nineteen years ago)

Ah look, stick to the *other* stages.

The last couple times I went, I think I saw about 2 artists on the main stage.

Good times!

Mark G, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:35 (nineteen years ago)

None of them - I could select a superb diverse line up without any Virgin radio bands.

djmartian, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:35 (nineteen years ago)

Systemsbury Thinkstival

blueski, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

And nobody would go.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

Holistic Tent

blueski, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

Creeping Bent play the Holistic Tent.

Mark G, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

Here is a festival with no Virgin radio bands:

Venn Festival - in Bristol
http://www.vennfestival.com/artists/index.html

djmartian, Friday, 30 March 2007 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

Well, I'm looking forward to CSS if nothing else.

The Wayward Johnny B, Friday, 30 March 2007 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

Yes it also takes place inside a theatre as opposed to a farm.

Any of those acts listed could conceivably play Glasto on one of the stages. You actually don't know what you're talking about.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 March 2007 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

I mean Luke Vibert headlining FFS! Might as well be Saturday night in the Glade.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 March 2007 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

re: You actually don't know what you're talking about.

I remember media coverage of Glastonbury festivals stretching back to 1986. You were still in short trousers back then ! Matt DC

djmartian, Friday, 30 March 2007 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

they were really short shorts as well.

blueski, Friday, 30 March 2007 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

blueski - you were in short trousers as well in 1986! [as an 8 year old correct?]

djmartian, Friday, 30 March 2007 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, Steve in short trousers. Yeah right.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 March 2007 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

My secret shame.

blueski, Friday, 30 March 2007 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

1986 - Glasto attendance capacity 60,000 - i wonder how many scallies jumped the fence to get in free?
http://www.efestivals.co.uk/festivals/glastonbury/1986/
CND and local charities benefit to the tune of £130,000.

2007
These days how much does that steel fence cost 1 Million?

djmartian, Friday, 30 March 2007 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

What, to see revolutionary cutting edge trailblazers like Level 42, Simply Red and the Waterboys?

Matt DC, Friday, 30 March 2007 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

to be fair there was no Virgin radio back then.

Alan, Friday, 30 March 2007 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

well The Waterboys are playing this year too. a shame that Level 42 aren't eh?

blueski, Friday, 30 March 2007 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

re: to be fair there was no Virgin radio back then.

de facto Radio 1 in the daytime mid 80s was like Virgin radio today - it was a melodic pop/ rock songs based station with wacky djs.

djmartian, Friday, 30 March 2007 16:13 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...

Back To The Planet now confirmed for LV Chapel Stage!

Alba, Sunday, 27 May 2007 01:46 (nineteen years ago)

Gosh I wish I could go and watch Back to the Planet in a field full of Estate Agents.

oh my dear lord that is a load of unmitigated shite (super furries and guillemots aside)

Just got offed, Friday, 1 June 2007 00:08 (nineteen years ago)

like, EVERYTHING i hate about music, on two stages, inside three days

Just got offed, Friday, 1 June 2007 00:08 (nineteen years ago)

Why do they have bands starting at 10:20 in the morning? That's just cruel (to the bands)

The Macallan 18 Year, Friday, 1 June 2007 00:44 (nineteen years ago)

only band to start at 10:20 is national youth orchestra, which is, I believe, cruel to absolutely everyone

Just got offed, Friday, 1 June 2007 00:46 (nineteen years ago)

21:20 CUD
22:40 Back to the Planet
23:25 Ned's Atomic Dustbin

hahaha. i mean really - thats just scraping the barrel.

and yeah, i normally feel sick the day the lineup is announced as i get upset due to my parental resposibilities getting in the way of such pleasure filled times.
for the first time in ages, this has not happened this year.

mark e, Friday, 1 June 2007 12:58 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think this is as bad as the year when Muse, Oasis and Macca headlined but it's nearly there.

But who cares? It'll be brilliant anyway because it ALWAYS IS.

Matt DC, Friday, 1 June 2007 13:03 (nineteen years ago)
