Fopp have a suck it and see policy. That is, you buys yr disc, ye takes it home, ye listens to it an' if ye disnae like it, ye takes it back and they switch it or give you a full refund as long as you return it in the same condition and within two weeks. Does this not mean free CDs for all those people living in Sheffield, Nottingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh etc? Any Fopp workers know of any catches? Are they relying on the stigma of returning a CD for the Nth time?

I think you'll find Virgin, HMV etc. do the same thing...as long as you lie & say it's an unwanted gift ;-) I love Fopp though - perfect for replacing vinyl with 5-quid CDs...

can i have your vinyl then?

yeah most places do this, although they'd get suspicious if you did it with everything you bought (and you'd have to live with a guilty conscience).

Sorry...because I've got to admit, thanks to their great vinyl selection, I've also done it the other way round: Charles Mingus' Tijuana Moods on 12" for seven quid!!!!

hmv (at least here) will even take cds in any condition back and refund full price WITHOUT a receipt. you have to show id and your name goes in a little book to make sure you don't keep showing up to get rid of the old crap you bought somewhere else when you were 15.

now if you know somebody on the inside ...

yeah Selectadisc in London (and presumably Nottingham) carry those 6.99 LP reissues. didn't know they'd done Tijuana moods, so will look out for that one. most of these cheap LPs are pressed by a company called Scorpio or Scorpion in New Jersey which just buys the rights from major labels to press x number of copies of a certain title, the sound/artwork being taken from an original LP (which is a good thing if done well). unfortunately it's a bit of a grey area - i think the company press up more than they're supposed to or something. will be a shame if they stop
