I've said it before, I'll say it again: If Guided By Voices couldn't break through in 1994-1995, with amounts of press that would make the Strokes say "ENOUGH!", they'll never break through. There's no way Matador will be able to get them that much coverage ever again.
How aboot Matador push Mount Florida a little? Am I right?!

shit, he's probably right. We have to stop making deals with bands w/out consulting Dr. Funk first.

OK. I'm copying everyone on this. Time. To. Start. Pushing.

I'm not sure how this big fancy record business works, but I'd think that a band like GBV is a boon for Matador, given their built-in fanbase. I thought I read some stuff back in the day re: Robert Pollard's obsessive proclivity being the big reason in Matador & GBV parting ways. (I think I read that in Magnet or AltPress, so take that statement with a big fat car-sized salt lick.)
Also, I think it'd benefit GBV to sell their umpteen-thousand records at a smaller place than at one of them there corporate places, where the overheads are astronomical, groups not "of the moment" are lost in the shuffle, and the head of your company sports the convertible ponytail look. (Not to make fun or anything.)

GBV and their management wanted Matador to hire expensive commercial radio promotion firms to work on 'Do The Collapse'. Pollard also had a publishing deal that only paid his advance if GBV records were distributed by a major. I know TVT aren't a major but they are a bigger company than Matador. "obsessive proclivity" sounds like an excuse.
