minna, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hi Nathalie. notice your minnie riperton is in small case, is she some sort of pocket sized version of Minnie Rpperton (a mini version?)

Kris England, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Moonlight Shadow", Mike Oldfield
"Take My Breath Away", Berlin
"Take My Breath Away", Rex Smith

dave q, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe, but slagging her off is a CAPITAL offense. ;-)

Nathalie, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Odyssey's "Native New Yorker" is a great song.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Starship - Nothings Gonna Stop Us Now.

jel --, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Most of the records on your list are surely extremely cool. What do you mean?

N., Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

She's been dead for many a year so surely:

Minnie R.I.P.perton.

Sorry about that.......

Kris England, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i was in super-valu buying easter eggs yesterday and they played "Africa" by Toto over the PA. it sounded surprisingly good.

rener, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'll get me coat.

rener, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Most of these are fantastic. Particular faves : Rubbettes/Dollar/Slade/Marshall Hain/Swing Out Sister/Carpenters/Tina Charles.

Worth a thousand Belle and Sebastians!

If I had more time I'd name 50 more like *this*. I expect Marcello or R. Carmody could do it better anyway.

Dr. C, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hehehehe....finally - a thread in which I can justify saying it: I honestly believe that I Only Have Eyes for You is a clear contender for best song ever written - EVERY bloody version, although The Flamingoes take the biscuit.

Jez, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"I Only Have Eyes For You" is quite blatantly one of the best songs ever written.

Dan Perry, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Apart from "Sugar Baby Love" (and that's only because of what it kept off number one), and possibly "Breakout", I don't dislike any of the records in Kris's list, and love a lot of them. I also like Milli Vanilli: as much Frank Farian as possible, basically, apart from the Far Corporation of course.

"When You Are A King" is good, but "I've Got You On My Mind" is the greatest.

Have you read http://www.freakytrigger.co.uk/cottage.html yet ...? (disgraceful plug!)

One thing, though: surely it is agreed that Saint Etienne improved on "Who Do You Think You Are"? Not that I dislike the original, but it didn't have that 1970 magic about it (too late and too cabaret).

Robin Carmody, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hi Robin. I would agree entirely with your comments onFrank Farian, after posting my original, er, post I thought ofat least 10 other Farian related songs which should have gone on the list, the Boney M version of "Painter man" is one of the most bizzarre, brilliant cover versions ever recorded and "Fly robin fly" is equally as good.

The St Ettienne version of "Who do you think you are" is brilliant too but for me, nothing touches the mid seventies Butlins feel of the original, brilliant tune as well.

I actually bought the Candlewick green album hoping for further pop nuggets but was hugely dissapointed, every track is either a reworking of that tune or a piece of sub-cabaret evil.

Anyone else heard it?

"I only have eyes for you" is indeed a brilliant tune but is, to my mind, impossible to whistle which is something that quite a few of the tracks on my list have in common. I make no judgement on that but I'm sure there's someone who would like to comment.

Kris England, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aw, I give up Robin, what did Sugar baby love keep from number 1?

Kris England., Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Doris Day: Move Over Darling - a masterpiece...although I wouldn't say it was necessarily uncool. I've also always had a soft spot for the early recordings of Joseph & the Amazing.... I hope this isn't taking things too far...

Jez, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nothing much to add. Just to say there's nothing in kris's original list I actively dislike, several of my all-time fave singles are in there in fact. I would say BOTH this list and the Rolling Stone one are lists of great records. Neither is 'cooler' (urgh) than the other.

TEACH IN! YOU ARE A STAR, KRIS! :-)

Jeff W, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Come to think of it, there's no Cliff Richard here. My personal fave is an old '60s flop - The Time Inbetween - an utter gem, a kind of manic bossa nova thingy.

Jez, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

2 amazingly uncool but stunning Beatles covers: Frank Sinatra's version of "Something" & The Supremes "Come Together"

tacit, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kris: it was "This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us" by Sparks held at number two.

Robin Carmody, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rasputin not cool? On which planet? The mixing from Nightflight To Venus to the aforementioned greatest single about pre-revolutionary Russia ever made defines dance music. It Began In Moscow.

Mike Ratford, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thanks for that Robin. I've just gone off the fucker myself after that.
