ADMIN: archiving

OK I just archived abt 150 Classic-or-Duds and also a buncha Taking Sides as the ease-em-in run to trying to chip away at the VAST RIDICULOUS PILE of unclassified threads, many of which are fun and worth seeking out (and a small few of which are rubbish). My new computer allows me to do this a bit quickly, sorta.

I'm telling you this in case you're looking for them.

mark s, Sunday, 24 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yay mark!, etc.

jess, Sunday, 24 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The plan is to create a few more better categories, to try and take care of the backlog, and give newcoimers a chance to hunt old, intriguing threads down (also if poss not double up quite so much, tho frankly I think we're way past critical mass on that). I had a list of ideas but then I lost it. Except hurrah! I just redid it and am going to circulate it to all moderators and sub-moderators, in case they have other brilliant suggestions, or can spot stupidity in what I thought of so far. Patrick, are you still around and on-board, w.a difft e-mail? I'm assuming all the others are at least in principle interested: let me know if not.

mark s, Sunday, 24 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark S = man of goodness. *bows in worship*

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 24 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just did all the Article Responses also, but I realised after I finished that several of the earliest ones have bad links, thanks to Freaky Trigger's website relocation last spring... tho I assume you can get to them the long way, via the archives...

Now I'm going to bed.

mark s, Sunday, 24 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*de-lurks*

I'm here Mark !

Patrick, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mark s = totally awesome. I went looking for an old thread a couple days ago and was overwhelmed by the number of uncategorized threads (and so was my computer).

Vinnie, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yay mark s!

the epic jay-z/nas throwdowns pts 1 + 2 deserve their own category i think. not sure what to call that category though.

geeta, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hi Patrick :)!! you stop lurking now and then!!

erm i realised this can be a sort of birthday present for Tom! Esp.as like all good presents it is i. late, and ii. really more for me than him haha.

I dreamed I had already filed everything, but my categories were so cryptic and personal than everyone was cross with me... I'll type up my suggestions this evening and send em out to the mod squad. Now I have to go actual real work that I am somewhat paid for!!

mark s, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Geeta: that one is called EPIC THROWDOWNS, if my cryptic and personal suggestion sticks

mark s, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark'll unsink us! *applause*

How about putting the ILM Search thread in a category of its own? I've bookmarked it myself, of course, but it might be useful to make it more visible to newcomers etc.

OleM, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ta mark s, appreciated.

stevo, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm taking a whack at this too, tonight, but the eyes tend to bug out after a while. Don't know how many I managed to put away into the right places tonight, but progress is steady.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My god, it sounds like kudzu vines in there... Keep it up boys, we'll refill the canteens!

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

where's those canteens!!??

mark s, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you've probably already thought of this but we MUST have a category for the brilliant "Pinefox Song Series" - maybe we should call it something else tho' since others are now chipping in with their own

Jeff W, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

600 Classics or duds!! Dude!! RoXoR!! Well played Sean old chap (I filed some but he filed MANY)!!

mark s, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I also bashed in a bunch of Taking Sides and RFIs, as well as a few more Pop Eyes. I put a few into What in the Name of All That is Holy...? until I realized they didn't start with said phrase (including the one telling all of us to repent and accept Jesus), and a few into Very Bonkers, which I kept there but can move out again if you had specific plans for that category which didn't include those things.

My eyez hertz.

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ok well the other moderators are staying strangely quiet about my proposed categories which means
a. they think they are unimpeachably brilliant
b. they think they are totally crap but are v. v. fwightened of me...

i'm away from my computer from thursday and over eastah, but i'll do some more tonight, and put up a couple of the obviously uncontroversial categories (like Admin).

mark s, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i also noticed a coupla misplaced taking sides that i know i did, so i'll undo them....

mark s, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry Mark - I was picking my nose and forgot to check my hotmail. I will deliver my wise judgement shortly.

N., Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ok we have made a good start, esp. sean

tonight i will going to do a run out of of the uncat still extant (yes quite a lot of them) and take them up country with my list of proposed cats and see how well it actually works ON PAPER (because it's a big pain to start then have to rename); i am still more convinced by some than others, and also feel there are large areas not well speciated by my plan (poss cuz i am less interested in em and lump em all together)

mark s, Wednesday, 27 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what we should also do when all is agreed and effected is a thread which explains the cats as they have in fact panned out, then immediately archive THAT in the search ilm cat..., where ppl can find it and use it to post questions abt what may have been discussed in the past which are NOT so easy to google

mark s, Wednesday, 27 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fanks mark.

I've noticed two things:
1. A lot of the categories may not lend themselves to categorizizing strictly by title. Some say S or D and are actually really taking sides kinda things. I've probably flubbed a few already trying to clear out some of the "obvious" ones...the ones with more ambivalent names may be more of a challenge.. Still, I trust in you fully here.

2. It seems that a lot more of the older threads are suddenly appearing in the Recent Answers box. I guess that's probably an indication that our work is paying off.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 27 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes i think there are CoDs/S&Ds esp. which would go better in other cats: i kinda envisage the CoD as (ultimately) being a titanic repository judgments on musicians and bands - but i think eg writers and concepts (not to mention movies and foodstuffs) ought to be categorised by other means...

when we have completed this stage of our task, the NIGHTMARE BEGINS!! All dimensions of all parallel worlds, good and evil, will bleed into one another!! Chaos will reign!! Bwahahahahahahahaaaaaa!! You fools you fools!!!

GLORY, Wednesday, 27 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OH OH OH. One thing I thought of that might make for a good category, because there are quite a few thread in this vein scattered throughout: something for local events/ILM meetups/what have you. So it could encompass pub meets, show notices, etc. Currently a few of those are filed under "hype", which could be turned around and used for biased ravings. I'm thinking that the category could be something pithy like POST GLOBALLY, MEET LOCALLY. Or you could just cut to the quick with something like LOCAL MATTERS.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 27 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I Love Actual Real Life

mark s, Wednesday, 27 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sounds about right. I would be doing more with this archiving business, but this is a busy work week here (for once...).

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 27 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've never understood the "He Gives Himself an Ulcer" category. Depending on the criteria I think that several of the threads I've contributed to could fit there.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 27 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I always placed that as a Gang of Four reference ("the problem of culture/he gives himself an ulcer" from "at home he's a tourist") and therefore simply about "the problem of culture".

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 27 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

go4 is the ref, but it's just a I HAF NO IDEA WHERE THESE SHD GO SO FUCK YOU cat... (as in, he = tom = worrying too much abt such triv things as WHERE THIS STUPID THREAD GOES...)

the problem of culture is a good name for a category if you are only going to have one category

mark s, Wednesday, 27 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's also a good category for those threads about pesky yeast infections.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 27 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

La la la la. No feedback going on, really, so mark and I are just having our way with the category titles. You may live to regret this.

Sean Carruthers, Sunday, 31 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What I've seen of the suggestions look fantastic. Go forth!

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 31 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Note to other admin types: the C90 category had some bad illness on the back-end, causing it not to show up on the category list while selecting a category for the thread. I shuffled all the C90 threads out to a temp category, then back in to a newly-created version of the C90 category. If anyone sees any lingering badness, please let me know.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

By the way, judgement call required: I've been funnelling all the "songs about [x]" threads I come across into LISTS LISTS LISTS, but it occurs that they might be better suited in C90. What do all ye say?

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think it goes better in lists. Good on ya Sean.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What you guys done with the recent-ish qn about The Move? I wanted to draw Marcello's attention to it while he's here.

Jeff W, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

um i don't recall doing anything: but it can get a bit robotic, so i may have: can you remember the title? was it about a SONG for example? (in which case it may be in the yr song cat)

there are some old threads in the lists cat which should go elsewhere, but i think sean's decision is exactly right

i haf been laxx recently as have much writing to do eg for FT

mark s, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh also "flutes in pop" is in Music as Scam BY MISTAKE!! It will be moved when i remember... Heh i chuckle whenever I see it tho.

mark s, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What you guys done with the recent-ish qn about The Move? I wanted to draw Marcello's attention to it while he's here.
As it was titled "Let's Talk About the Move" I filed it under "Bid For Blab". Feel free to re-MOVE it.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm sure it was called 'let's talk about the move'. It wasn't abt a particular record I'm sure. (I tried word 'find' in uncat, and in the everybody's talking..., C/D and S/D cats, and also tried using the ILM search thread.)

Jeff W, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ta, Sean

Jeff W, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i think the search facility can no longer reach uncat, purely due to its position...

mark s, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't think that's it, mark. e.g. typing "move" as search term in ILM search throws up Marcello's v. recent Gillian Welch thread (as does "Welch" obv) which is still in uncat - something v. weird going on with that search engine.

Jeff W, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i think it does the "first 2500" or something, which still takes it a LITTLE way into uncat (but every thread we throw into a cat makes it one less the search can reach in uncat)

graham understands it

mark s, Wednesday, 10 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two months pass...
It archives the first 32MB.

Would it be a good idea to exclude Jay-Z/Naz threads and such?

Graham, Sunday, 30 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

exclude?!! the jay-z/nas thread should be the first thing saved for posterity!!

geeta, Sunday, 30 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

eep.

I don't mean archive, I mean index for ILE Search.

Graham, Sunday, 30 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)
