suggestions?

Wyndham Earl, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

call me stupid (i'd rather you don't) but what do you mean by schmindie?

willem, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You know - like the way indie is just kind of schmindie

N., Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

but the trax listed are not all what I'd call schmindie. Shed 7, Coldplay -- now that's what I call schmindie. certainly mr white town would not be overjoyed at being called schmindie.

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But schmindie he is. Schmindie = afraid to rock and pop.

N., Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

howsabout underground lovers - losin' it (1995. possibly mid but i'll say late... the seasons are different here anyway)

minna, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Something by Marine Research? It's a weird point in music, actually - I can't really think of anything from that era, specifically. St Etienne's Mario's Cafe is too early (..ooh go on - no-one will notice), as are Gallon Drunk. Maybe you could make the period a little broader. I know....The Apples in Stereo: Tidal Wave, as it's popped up at various points over the past 10 years - sooper-dooper!

Jez, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

let's try...: urusei yatsura - first day on a brand new planet

willem, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Indie scene was utterly moribund in 1996, which is perhaps why Belle & Sebastian seemed like such a bolt from the blue.

N., Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

probably. but i'd never heard indie before 1996. i slept through the entire britpop thing.

jez - you could have included two clear eyes by gallon drunk, or their version of to love somebody.

and how could i have missed the auteurs?

there also has to be one marion song in there.

remember kids, this is schmindie. let's not get all cool and underground on my ass.

Wyndham Earl, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Statuesque by Sleeper!
"i need high heels just to stand up"

MarkH, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

18th Dye - Glass House Failure
Morphine - Super Sex
Scrawl - Louis Lamour

Dave225, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Echobelly? Jack? Heavy Stereo? Gene? Northern Uproar? Menswe@r? Divine Comedy? Tiger? Geneva? Delgados? (were they around yet?)

Arab Strap, "The First Big Weekend" or "Hey! Ladies"?

(most of these are a little *too* uncool, perhaps.)

scott p., Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*actually most of these are way too 'uncool' to want to listen to, prolly*

scott p., Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I know one half of Sexus and he wouldn't much like that company either.

Robin Carmody, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'll take 'on the rose' or 'race' by Tiger; 'no one speaks', 'tranquilizer', or 'into the blue' by geneva. menswear are a bit *too* 1995 but we could probably sneak 'being brave' in. not that it's a particularly great song. i'll take one of the big ballady songs from the second half of Pioneer Soundtracks for Jack; 'kewpies like watemelons' by Urusei Yatsura; one of the early Delgados tracks... something by Suede? maybe 'by the sea'. oh and 'the first big weekend', but of course...

also, a bit American to be schmindie, but 'divebomb' by Number 1 Cup.

Wyndham Earl, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I want to say Hefner, God help me.

thom west, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gorky's!!

scott p., Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hefner? you say it like its a bad thing. but of course, they didn't emerge till about 98 or something did they.

Wyndham Earl, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm just going to say that this looks alarmingly like the tape I was playing in my car last night and go off somewhere and cry

electric sound of jim, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was wailing along at the top of my voice to "nature's hated" and wondering why Fosca were so fucking awful

electric sound of jim, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've got it: MY LIFE STORY. The schmindiest of schmindie.

electric sound of jim, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Number One Cup - Divebomb

jel --, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

of course, we must always be mindful of the line between embracing the Schmindie and looking like complete fuckwits.

that line is MY LIFE STORY.

Wyndham Earl, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

still, Sparkle is a tune.

Wyndham Earl, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and at least no one's mentioned Bis yet.

Wyndham Earl, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

now why'd you go and do that?

dyson, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sugar Sugar Kandy Pop!

electric sound of jim, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You've got 2 Cat Power albums to pick from, I'd go with her cover of "Still in Love." And I'm sure there's some Palace from around then...

bnw, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm starting to wonder whether Schmindieness is exclusive to the British isles. These American suggestions (Cat Power, Palace) don't seem to sit within my definition of schmindie. The No.1 cup song, however, does.

electric sound of jim, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i agree, jim. Schmindie may be a, urgh, nebulous term but it does require some of Schmindie instinct to recognise it. a sort of Schmindar.

it is certainly anglo-centric being in-part derived from (and possibly in-part as a response to) Britpop.

1996, as the melting point of Britpop, was the schmindiest time ever!

also: Ride - Black Nite Crash.

Wyndham Earl, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dweeb "chart raider/space invader", pullover "holiday"

Fierce Panda: schmindiest label evah?

electric sound of jim, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh very much so. circa 1996 anyway.

followed closely by Bluefire and their "Shine albums for fanzine writers" (copyright Steve Lamacq) series of Snakebite City compilations.

but that was a different evolution of Schmindie, arguably.

Wyndham Earl, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've got this Evening Session double CD around somewhere that is virtually the definitive Schmindie artefact. I think it includes about half (or more) of what's already been mentioned. *and* it dates from late '96 IIRC

electric sound of jim, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

  • christ, there was some shit about in 1996 weren't there.

Wyndham Earl, Monday, 25 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

    Damn, this is fun.

Is there a word for those second-rate Britpoppish bands that only ever got mentioned when Select was looking for page 10 filler? I'm referring specifically to the Echobellys and Elckas of the world.

    Mark, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Any of those Volume magazine/compilation deals from the time would do the trick, no?

    Andy K, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Volume! I actually used to love that thing, as poorly produced as it was.

I think I've still got a few kicking around somewhere. One day, when I'm feeling brave enough, I'll pull out Sharks Patrol These Waters and give it a what for...

    Mark, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Mum's Gone To Iceland' by Bennet! Remember that? Obviously, this was the time I first started listening to music so these are all sentimental favourites...

    Bill, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Someone Always Gets There First by Bennett changedmy life.

Wyndham Earl, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is starting to remind me of the 'bands you'd forgotten about' thread...

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"boy wonder" by speedy - truly terrible on record, truly terrible songs but wonderful WONDERFUL even MAGICAL live i can tell you... really took the royal piss out of the sports students...

chris browning, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was flicking down this thread, in wonder at how much of English could be a foreign language, until I spotted SFA's "Something For The Weekend". Surely "Fuzzy Logic" signifies a golden age for jangly guitars?

Jesus Christ, Space. Forget I said anything.

Mike Ratford, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

SFA have never been particularly Schmindie though. even Fuzzy Logic was seen as a step removed... now 60ft Dolls on the other hand...

we still had that Speedy song on our union jukebox until recently. 'he's got Damon's eyes...'

Wyndham Earl, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

    Thurman - "She's a Man"!!

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

    two years pass...
Just made a schmindie tape, mainly with songs from '95-'97 (a golden era for schmindie? surely romo was part of it, whatever it was). You can find it here!

    fernando, Tuesday, 25 May 2004 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Every song has to be by Ditch Croaker.
