if you're in the habit of taping or downloading dj sets done for radio (like the essential mix or breezeblock)... what are your favourites?

i'm very keen on the essential mix done by air in 1998 that was so long they had to spread it over two weeks. other classics: anything the avalanches ever did, and felix da housecat's breezeblock.

my two favorite radio shows are Shakin the Shack (rockabilly etc.) and Road House (soul, blues, country etc.) both Kexp seattle www.kexp.org.

I have a feeling that's maybe not the styles you're after though.

If you've got a computer that's up to it, you can get uncompressed audio off their site, or else lots of other formats.

oh yeh, i forgot, i've got squarepushers breezeblock, which isn't bad at all. zappas peaches en regalia, some jazzy stuff, care bear records, gabba "cocksucker cocksucker cocksucker...fuck my sister" and a couple of his own (iambic 5 poetry i think)

gareth, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

thats from about 98, and on tape too

gareth, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(i can't get radio 1 at the moment, so haven't heard anything recent)

I'll second the Air nomination, most of which I have on two C90s. I have most of the second David Holmes essential mix on tape (I also have his "Essential Mix 98/01" CD which isn't actually what he did for the radio - and I've just bought his new mix CD on spec - can't wait to listen to it). I remember listening to the Photek essential mix, half asleep, the one where he debuted the whole of Goldie's "Mother". As for Breezeblock mixes, I wish I had a tape of the Björk one, that was great.

avalanches - breezeblock, morning becomes ecletic, Ibiza, One World. all wonderful.

Poops Mcgee, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i have the lemonjelly breezeblock, which is fun. i'd really like to have the mix that the guy from asian dub foundation did for the Xfm sunday afternoon show. it was maybe in jan/feb this year.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've mini-disced sets from Radio1's "Blue Room" which has been on since Jan;including amazing ones from King of Woolworths,A Man Called Adam & Goldfrapp. All of these(esp. Goldfrapp's) are reminiscent of Air's Essential mix.

I think Avalanches 2nd breezeblock mix completely changed the way i look at DJing-i'm actually that sad that i am still collecting records from it a year on!

is there a site anywhere where breezeblock sessions and the like can be downloaded? since im in ireland i can't tape them off the radio... cheers, robin

robin, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My favorite radio DJ sets were by Jeff Mills -- when he spun as the Wizard on WDRQ and WJLB in Detroit. This was generally in the '80s. At the time, I was big into hip hop and knew most of that stuff he was throwing into his mixes, but he'd also use electro, industrial, and new wave that I couldn't always pin down. Years later I found out how revolutionary he was (at the time, I didn't know the Wizard was Mills, and I also found out some of those track IDs I couldn't figure out), but the dexterity, the ear for putting everything together, and the aggressiveness blew my adolescent head apart. I'd do almost anything to get the tapes I made of his shows back. (He also ruined my attention span.)

ROBIN, TRY AUDIOGALAXY. PUT IN THE ARTIST AND BREEZEBLOCK AS THE SONG TITLE. YOU SHOULD FIND PRACTICALLY ANYTHING.

Poops Mcgee, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

first hi minna >;-)

i've been taping radio one's essential mix for years but since i've had a computer i've been able to download some of my favourites and replace that battered old cassette with a brand new cd version >:-)

some of my favourites would include laurent garnier's awesome 1995 essential mix that contains the type of mixing that every dj should aspire to and an absolutely top notch choice of tunes.

the david holmes mixes are also great as are some of dave clarkes, but they're more for serious techno heads only. i've also got an old future sound of london mix that i've yet to find on Audiogalaxy that was excellent and contained lots of samples from the movie "silent running".

more recently i've been enjoying all the mixes you mentioned and recently just finished d/l that two hour soulwax hang the dj mix.

i've also got lots of lemon jelly mixes that are cool and also that excellent goldfrapp blue room mix.

for those of you using audiogalaxy all the above are freely available if you know what you're looking for although i'd suggest you apply to join this group on AG where we share all the above mixes...

Thanks for this one, I've gone scurrying to my tapes and rediscovered the Heavenly Social Jon Carter and Richard Fearless double-header from 1996. Phick Ass Phuck.

Generally I'm far too ill-disciplined to have a decent collection of these, if I'm staying up that late I'm not normally in a state to operate delicate hi-fidelity recording equipment. My long-play minidisc recorder is great in theory for Breezeblock compilations but I keep messing it up - yes, that Lemon Jelly session was great the two times I heard it before recording the Tuesday night rock show on top. (No, I don't listen to the rock show, but sometimes I get confused and forget what day it is. Is there an emoticon for sighing? I wouldn't use it anyway because emoticons are shit but it would be appropriate here.)

I never heard the original version of the David Holmes Essential Mix, but the album is, um, essential. I didn't realise he had a new mix out, I'll be getting that tomorrow. In fact, I'm off to queue outside the shop now.

Mike Ratford, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

umm well the bold worked okay but the url link seemed to disappear completely >:-(

sod it, i'll just cut and paste it. okay try this group on AG:

matt, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mike - that's the beauty of being in these groups on AG - someone else stays up in the middle of the night to do the recording.

and i'm also getting that new david holmes tomorrow - it's been getting some great reviews

matt, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does anyone listen to Solid Steel on BBC London Live? I can't because I'm provincial, but the DJ Food & DK "Now Listen!" CD is spectacular, a worthy sequel to Coldcut's mouth-opening Journeys By DJ.

Cockneys, please let me know what I'm missing. Go on, rub it in.

Mike Ratford, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gonzales' breezeblock set the other week (standing in for crappy Dj Shadow) was pretty good. esp the bits where he's singing along and he duets with whitney houston...

Wyndham Earl, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have two favourite Essential Mixes. One is Paul Oakenfold's Goa Mix in 1995, and the other was from Portishead, which i think was 1996, but not totally sure. I also wish i could hear some of the Solid Steel stuff. I like the PC and Strictly Kev mixes, both for Warp (Blech I + II) and Ninja Tune (ColdKrushCuts).

Alex G, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Essential mixes from Massive Attack and Basement Jaxx are both great.. I just recently heard a new Basement Jaxx essential mix; I haven't been able to sit down and listen at length, though what I did hear was fantastic.

Bobby D. Gray, Tuesday, 26 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you defintely need audiogalaxy - i'm also in a solid steel group and as such have received numerous quality mixes from the show by artists as diverse as bonobo, roots manuva, coldcut, new flesh and london elektricity.

and that now listen mix cd was my favourite mix cd of last year - sheer genius - i especially loved the bit where they mix dj vadim's terrorist over mr scruff's ug...

matt, Wednesday, 27 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the Christmas day soulwax radio one mix (hang the dj) was pretty awesome, I think its on audiogalaxy, over a hour of mixed bootlegs..,.

jk, Wednesday, 27 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thanks to Matt for the audiogalaxy tips, I really must get a broadband connection at some point. And "Terrorist", oh yes.

I wish I had the Portishead mix. Have you heard DJ Andy Smith's "The Document"? It has a higher density of soulful goodness in a mere 45 minutes than any other mix, a particular highlight being "The Adventures Of Grandmaster Flash On The Wheels Of Steel" dropping into Peggy Lee's version of "Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay".

Mike Ratford, Wednesday, 27 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

jeff mills, the wizard mix here/ http://www.audiogalaxy.com/list/song.php? &g=198908516 all it was promised to be and more, shame about the audio watermark someones put on it, but still worth the d/load.

I haven't had a working radio since 2002 but I certainly enjoyed some of the One World mixes by Mannaseh (sp?) and Two Lone Swordsmen. The Squrepusher mix mentioned upthread sounds terrific.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 09:15 (twenty-one years ago)

My first, last and everything is the Bomb the Bass 2001 Breezeblock set. I should really get out more.

Gribowitz (Lynskey), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 09:31 (twenty-one years ago)

the new Solid Steel mix by Mr Scruff is totally gorgeous and this is part 1 of 4 ! wow.

I just bought this, and that whole section with The Terrorist going into Mirror In The Bathroom is pretty damn mindblowing.
