i'm very keen on the essential mix done by air in 1998 that was so long they had to spread it over two weeks. other classics: anything the avalanches ever did, and felix da housecat's breezeblock.

I have a feeling that's maybe not the styles you're after though.
If you've got a computer that's up to it, you can get uncompressed audio off their site, or else lots of other formats.

I'll second the Air nomination, most of which I have on two C90s. I have most of the second David Holmes essential mix on tape (I also have his "Essential Mix 98/01" CD which isn't actually what he did for the radio - and I've just bought his new mix CD on spec - can't wait to listen to it). I remember listening to the Photek essential mix, half asleep, the one where he debuted the whole of Goldie's "Mother". As for Breezeblock mixes, I wish I had a tape of the Björk one, that was great.

i've been taping radio one's essential mix for years but since i've had a computer i've been able to download some of my favourites and replace that battered old cassette with a brand new cd version >:-)
some of my favourites would include laurent garnier's awesome 1995 essential mix that contains the type of mixing that every dj should aspire to and an absolutely top notch choice of tunes.
the david holmes mixes are also great as are some of dave clarkes, but they're more for serious techno heads only. i've also got an old future sound of london mix that i've yet to find on Audiogalaxy that was excellent and contained lots of samples from the movie "silent running".
more recently i've been enjoying all the mixes you mentioned and recently just finished d/l that two hour soulwax hang the dj mix.
i've also got lots of lemon jelly mixes that are cool and also that excellent goldfrapp blue room mix.
for those of you using audiogalaxy all the above are freely available if you know what you're looking for although i'd suggest you apply to join this group on AG where we share all the above mixes...

Generally I'm far too ill-disciplined to have a decent collection of these, if I'm staying up that late I'm not normally in a state to operate delicate hi-fidelity recording equipment. My long-play minidisc recorder is great in theory for Breezeblock compilations but I keep messing it up - yes, that Lemon Jelly session was great the two times I heard it before recording the Tuesday night rock show on top. (No, I don't listen to the rock show, but sometimes I get confused and forget what day it is. Is there an emoticon for sighing? I wouldn't use it anyway because emoticons are shit but it would be appropriate here.)
I never heard the original version of the David Holmes Essential Mix, but the album is, um, essential. I didn't realise he had a new mix out, I'll be getting that tomorrow. In fact, I'm off to queue outside the shop now.

I wish I had the Portishead mix. Have you heard DJ Andy Smith's "The Document"? It has a higher density of soulful goodness in a mere 45 minutes than any other mix, a particular highlight being "The Adventures Of Grandmaster Flash On The Wheels Of Steel" dropping into Peggy Lee's version of "Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay".

I just bought this, and that whole section with The Terrorist going into Mirror In The Bathroom is pretty damn mindblowing.
