David Lee Roth Insanity!

So apparently there is this hour long super bizarre promotional video that David sent out to a bunch of folks. I haven't seen so I'm at a bit of a loss for how to describe it--other than the fact that there is a lot of nudity and weirdness--but according to urban legend when Roth's agent was asked about the video and Roth's reason for sending it out, he replied that "it speaks for itself."

Has anyone heard about this? Does anyone know where to get a copy or a Quicktime version of it?

Hi, new answers!

Don't know nuthin' `bout that, but I heard a reasonably credible rumour that he'll actually be touring with Sammy Hagar this summer. No joke.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 27 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's been a rotating video clip at davidleeroth.com for the past few weeks. Apparently, he's covering everyone from Gerry Rafferty to Lords of Acid to the Chemical Brothers.

David Lee Roth has existed only in hologram form since he died in 1987 in a bizarre rock climbing accident.

Kris England, Wednesday, 27 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

bizarre rockclimbing accident = Skyscraper. the title track alone could kill from 50 paces

This DLR video is the new Paul Stanley Stage Banter. It must be found.

i saw it when it came out…honestly, it's not interesting at all…

veronica moser (veronica moser), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 13:05 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, my copy is long gone. Nothing to write home to mother about, trust me.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 21 March 2006 13:50 (twenty years ago)

It's amazing, I have a copy. I am not sure what the best part is: drinking beer with pregnant women, running through an endless tunnel with gun-toting gals accompanied by techno music for no reason at all, his faithful "Baker Street", his flamenco guitar workouts, or the segment where he picks a midget's nose while the both laugh maniacally. I was really disappointed by his new radio show having seen this thing a couple years ago.

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 14:41 (twenty years ago)

so speaking of that radio show, I caught 15 minutes at random last week. Switching stations I heard a song by the 70s funk/metal band Mothers Finest and stopped to listen. Turned out it was the DLR show, he went into a whole rap about MF being the grt lost band of all time and how everybody he played em for went who's THAT and on and on abt how greatt singer Joyce Kennedy is on the next track he's gonna play and then Roth sets it up by shouting:

"LISTEN TO THIS BITCH!"

m coleman (lovebug starski), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 14:52 (twenty years ago)

I, too, have seen the Roth video. I, too, was not impressed. I still haven't heard his radio show because, well, I never listen to the radio. But his book is a timeless classic.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 15:00 (twenty years ago)

it was heartbreaking to listen to his show. Clearly, he's very bright and has done lots of stuff that your average "past his prime" rocker hasn't, but the show is hapless. Now, I am a Sirius subscriber, and am very happy to be currently listening to the man he replaced…

herewith…an example when he and his presently even more washed-up ex-partner were giants bestriding the Earth…

veronica moser (veronica moser), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 15:30 (twenty years ago)

I love how the camera settles on Michael Anthony right before Eddie's solo, and then stays there. Also, it reminded me how many acts today feature frontmen who are so studiously flamboyant, rather than the real deal. DLR was DLR - 24-7!

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 18:08 (twenty years ago)

I was wondering if his show was syndicated or if it was just a Boston thing. He's on buses all over the gah damn place here.

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 03:15 (twenty years ago)

isn't his show based in new york?

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 03:21 (twenty years ago)

Yeah. I'm pissed that on the West Coast we get Adam Carolla instead. It seems like it should be the other way around.

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 17:42 (twenty years ago)

Was DLR off the air for a week (a few weeks back) in every market? The whole 'week's vacation' thing only eight weeks into the gig smelled a little fishy, as if the show Wasn't Working and they were frantically trying to retool/reboot.

Jeff Wright (JeffW1858), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 17:52 (twenty years ago)

might be the case, as CBS Radio (née Inifinity Broadcasting) is in full panic mode…

what's wrong with that? what do you need explained?

that, to me, is much better than the radio show, for which he was woefully prepared.

veronica moser (veronica moser), Saturday, 10 June 2006 18:17 (twenty years ago)

he's really starting to resemble bill pullman.

Treat yourself to the DLR episode of Maron’s Podcast. It’s an hour and half of testifyin’ Diamond style

calstars, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 22:17 (six years ago)

He was also on Joe Rogan's show recently. It's three fucking hours long, and I didn't make it to the end, but what I saw was good:

Yeah the Rogan one is epic. Too much to digest in one sitting. 30-45 mins at a time. D is a fucking madman, love that dude

When you learn the real reason why they had the green m and m thing in their contract, you have to admire them.

@ 12:39 when he’s “explaining” jazz to joe, what he’s breaking down is the piano intro to “ruby, my dear” off “thelonious monk with john coltrane”

budo jeru, Monday, 22 July 2019 18:20 (six years ago)

Watched only 20 minutes of that so far, we're really going to miss that guy when he's gone. There will be a giant David Lee Roth sized hole in the universe, and we're all going to feel it.
