I saw this video on VH1 Classic last night, the closeups of Mr Copes nose and lips, did not do the video justice. Also I thought the song stunk.

What are you talking about? The video is complete shit, but the song is brilliant.

I know... you can even seen the saliva in his mouth..

Still.. That was the song that made me a Cope fan...

20 MOTHERS is an incredible album!!!!!

MAYBE WITH MORE LISTENS I COULD LIKE IT. TO BE HONEST IT WAS THE FIRST TIME I HEARD IT. I WILL CHECK IT OUT TODAY.

The album from whence this single comes isn't that fantastic (that being MY NATION UNDERGROUND), but to me that single remains a keeper. Julian's finest hour remains PEGGY SUICIDE.

I reckon his first two (World Shut... & Fried) are bloody masterpieces. Mercury must have given him a lot of Freedom, as the label move coincided with the change to ultra-slick, chart-oriented stuff.

I dunno, I've always liked My Nation Underground. They were trying to turn him into a major pop star I guess, but it's a solid album, more focused than some of his others. Has a lot of nice pop tracks on it.

I liked My Nation Underground too. Never could get into Peggy Suicide, even though it seems to be universally considered the best. I must be damaged goods.

as much of a [huge]fan as i am of cope's solo output, nothing he's done has topped Kilimanjaro.

Fried was at the time and remained for many years My Favourite Album of All Time. Though I would urge you to listen to World Shut Your Mouth (the album), and in particular the phenomenal Quizmaster. Also the original version of Land of Fear, on side D of the Sunspots gatefold double-pack (itself a beautiful artefact) was for some time My Favourite Song of All Time.

I'm afraid The Drude and I kind of parted company after Jehovahkill.

I'll concure with the last chap about the Sunspots double 7 inch package being gorgeous, as are all the songs on it. THere's a few good moments on "My nation underground", and they were "Charlotte Anne", "China doll" and "I'm not losing sleep", which sounded plain evil. And heck, the b-sides of this era dump all over the album tracks, so check out "SPQR", "Crazy farm animal" and "Christmas mourning" - though they were all old tracks anyway. Me and Cope parted company after "Interceptor", when I lost interest in what he was doing. Always interesting to read or see, but I don't really want to buy a Brain Doner record thank you.

Crazy Farm Animal was great, wasn't it? You're right about these being earlier tracks - somewhere I've got a bootleg of st. Julian demos (God, that was so exciting at the time) with SPQR and something called Hey!, and possibly those Craig/Balloon Farm covers on it.

dan, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yep, got that bootleg, with the song that's just completely backwards and all other weird things on it. Must dig it out sometime. Bootlegs seemed so much more fun in those days, like the "demos" tape with all of the Teardrops third album on it which still sounds better than the "Everyone wants to shag..." album to my ears. Sigh.

This seems as good a place as any to announce that I've finally gotten Kilimanjaro, and I'm glad I did. I'd always known that Teardrop Explodes was supposed to be a bundle of musical goodness (damn you Ned), but all I'd heard til now was Everybody Wants to Shag, and it just didn't do anything for me. Now I understand, yesss.

a bundle of musical goodness (damn you Ned)

Could you tug a bit on your earlobe? That'll clear up the direct cerebral cortex signal of yours I'm currently monitoring.
