I may become an expatriate in a few months so what are some nice albums dealing with travel? Not necessarily looking for music thats good in the car. But just music that deals w. traveling or running away. Loreena McKennit, Book of Secrets. Black Box Recorder, Facts of Life.

phil, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

not strictly to do with travelling or anything, but there is something about these ones that makes me have to listen to them on the train when i'm going home/going to uni.

Station 17+ - Hitparade (always reminds me of train stations and, kind of, the michel gondry train video (but not the chem bros song))

any of the Hefner albums are lovely for coming to. listening to them as the train goes through the old mining towns across the penines.

for going to a town by the sea to: Electrelane - Rock It To The Moon

Neil Young "Im the Ocean" off Mirrorball not sure about what Neil is dealing with here but I like the song esp the lyrics and on the surface anyway deals with travelling... this is going to take up a bit of room but havent worked out hyperlinks so here it is: I'm an accident I was driving way too fast Couldn't stop though So I let the moment last I'm for rollin' I'm for tossin' in my sleep It's not guilt though It's not the company I keep

People my age They don't do the things I do They go somehwere While I run away with you I got my friends And I got my children too I got her love She's got my love too

I can't hear you But I feel the things you say I can't see you But I see what's in my way Now I'm floatin' Cause I'm not tied to the ground Words I've spoken Seem to leave a hollow sound

On the long plain See the rider in the night See the chieftain See the braves in cool moonlight Who will love them When they take another life Who will hold them When they tremble for the knife

Voicemail numbers On an old computer screen Rows of lovers Parked forever in a dream Screaming sirens Echoing across the bay To the old boats From the city far away

Homeless heroes Walk the streets of their hometown Rows of zeros On a field that's turning brown They play baseball They play football under lights They play card games And we watch them every night

Need distraction Need romance and candlelight Need random violence Need entertainment tonight Need the evidence Want the testimony of Expert witnesses On the brutal crimes of love

I was too tired To see the news when I got home Pulled the curtain Fell into bed alone Started dreaming Saw the rider once again In the doorway Where she stood and watched for him Watched for him

I'm not present I'm a drug that makes you dream I'm an aerostar I'm a cutlass supreme In the wrong lane Trying to turn against the flow I'm the ocean I'm the giant undertow

I'm the ocean I'm the ocean I'm the giant undertow I'm the ocean I'm the giant undertow I'm the ocean I'm the ocean I'm the ocean I'm the ocean I'm the ocean I'm the ocean

What, nobody mentioned Kraftwerk's Trans Europe Express yet?

OleM, Saturday, 30 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one month passes...
I don't care if everyone thinks that they're horribly pedestrian- Travis's Driftwood is one of the most beautiful songs ever, and it's great for feeling lost & a bit homesick. Also, Hey Kind Friend by the Indigo Girls.... this one reminds me of traveling back to college at the end of summer break. The Sound of Silence, by Simon & Garfunkel, but that might be just because I always see the opening sequence of The Graduate in my mind when I hear this song. And Timestretched, by Divine Comedy is not exactly about travel, but is another wonderful song for feeling lost and kind of homesick. And one last one: Jacksonville Skyline, by Whiskeytown. None of these are good driving songs, but they're great for listening to in a hotel room your first night in a new place.

Aaargh! How come nobody has mentioned that the First Evah Concept Album, by one of the most famous and greatest figures in the history of music, is all about travel and takes you on a journey around the world? I am talking of Frank Sinatra's 1958 Come Fly With Me!
