Toronto ILM get-together: anyone interested?

So I've floated the idea around occasionally, and it seems there are a lot more people from Toronto dropping in to ILM these days. Anyone have any interest in meeting up at some point, for beer/coffee/whatever? I'm not a huge fan of loud smoky clubs myself, but toss some ideas into this thread and we'll see if anything comes out of it.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

no. you made fun of my flow.

plus i don't live anywhere near there.

jess, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, you're always welcome if you find yourself in the neighborhood! Incidentally, I'm in the East York/Riverdale area but can wend my way downtown fairly easily. Mssr. Noodles says offthread he won't be in T.O. until mid-May so maybe we can plan for later on in May, unless anyone has a burning desire to do this right away.

ps. Ned, are you gonna drop by? Don't you try to make all of these ILM get-togethers? ;)

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And I smoke so you can't take me anywhere. I've never been Toronto though. What's it like?

Alex in SF, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sean- I'm going to toronto for a couple of months soon (as part of my studies). I should be flying out from london in mid-april. So it would be a nice idea (since i missed the london ILM meeting).

By the way- are there any good record shops around that area? What about gigs? Are any of the godspeed folk based there?

The worst part is I'm going to have to leave most of my 200+ albums damn it. I'll have to select my 10-15 all time favourities (an impossible task really).

Julio Desouza, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So is all the ECW press gang from Toronto? How many are their? Record stores? not again :P. I really should find the link to where we discuss the shops around town. Ok in quick form 1) Soundscapes and She Said Boom are both on College Street West's north side. 2) Rotate This is really far west on Queen Street West. 3) The honking huge HMV at 333 Young is fun for a laugh. Sadly I only know the rockist ones. I guess the dance/trance record store on the northwest corner of Queen Street West and Spadina seems fairly decently stocked but the name escapes me.
There are shows all the time so there is probably something good going on check Eye or Now for listings.
Godspeed You French Hippy people are in Montreal but you can occasionaly harrass CFNY radio personalities reminding them that they do indeed suck. 8 days of classes left. YARHOOOOOOOOOOOOO. gotta run.

Mr Noodles, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned, are you gonna drop by? Don't you try to make all of these ILM get-togethers? ;)

Or instigate them, yes. ;-) And I might just at that -- if it's scheduled well enough in advance.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

well, since i'm in toronto you can count me in... i'm sure we could russle up some guests. for those who are wondering, toronto is a pretty good place. don't go by marge simpson's "clean and boring" description...;)

those are all good record stores that were mentionned. soundscapes being tops. there's also penguin music on mccaul just north of queen st. and the electronic shop at queen and spadina is called "metropolis" - a large collection of stuff, albeit a bit expensive...

rob bolton, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Key record shops in the Toronto area:
- Soundscapes on College St.
- Penguin on McCaul (off Queen)
- Rotate This! on Queen
- Metropolis (Queen + Spadina)
- HMV/Sam's Superstores (Yonge + Dundas)
- She Said Boom (College) (good for used)
- Neurotica (some decent used stuff) (Bloor + Queen St. locations)

I'd probably be in for a meet if somebody set it up...

Mark, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So you guys won't do anything for a crisp clean American dollar bill?

Alex in SF, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, one thing we'd do for an American dollar is give you $1.60 Canadian, or thereabout. But only if we were planning to go to Buffalo for the weekend, or something like that.

Julio, judging by your posts to the board, I think you'd probably find the most to like at Rotate This, Soundscapes and HMV333. Rotate is the biggest indie place in the city, with great collections of punk/alternative/pop/etc, jazz, and electronic stuff, and a huge selection of vinyl too. HMV has probably the biggest depth in the jazz dept, with a fairly big "out" sub-category, and also a small selection of vinyl. My fave is still Soundscapes, because it has the best-edited selection in a number of different categories--as I've said before, it may not have the most CDs, but it has the RIGHT CDs.

Anyone have any preference for the where of the get-together? I'm thinking College might be a good choice, especially if we want to check out Soundscapes and She Said Boom in the process (depending on time of day of course). But you probably all have regular routines for shopping anyhow. Anyhow, here's a couple of ideas to get the discussion started:

Free Times Cafe on College: beer, eats, smoking section if you wanna smoke, and some music later in the night (though that could be a minus if it's one of their amateur nights).
Oasis on College: beer, tapas eats, and an upstairs section for music, if there's anything interesting happening that night.
Hacienda on Queen West: eats, I'm sure there's beer (though I've only ever been there for brunch), and a patio out back, if the weather is nice.
Sneaky Dee's on College: beer, beer, more beer, lots of good cheap Mexican-ish food. And beer. And smoking and beer.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Excellent Sean. We'll have a drink, go to a record shop, and the 'amateur nights' could be fun. Any of them do any feedback sets...

I've heard Toronto is brilliant. Two of my colleages who went there didn't want to go back.

So I'll be there in about three (as long as the canadian high commision don't want any more documentation for my student visa-- bloody bureaucracy!) weeks. So I could contact you lot via a question on ILM. Should be good...

Julio Desouza, Saturday, 30 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Two of my colleages who went there didn't want to go back'

To London, that is.

Julio Desouza, Saturday, 30 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dammit! I left Toronto the day you started this thread! Now I'm in Cambridge, MA. Timing, Sean, timing!

Brian MacDonald, Saturday, 30 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As far as I knew, Brian, you were in the Pacific NW. Oddly enough, I may actually be out that way mid-April.

The amateur nights at Free Times tend usually to be more folky or singer-songwritery...I'm not sure if there are even places to go where you'd find feedback jams on a regular basis. Anyhow, Julio, whether this turns into an actual get-together or not, email me when you're coming, or after you're here, and I can give you the tour if you want.

Sean Carruthers, Saturday, 30 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As far as I knew, Brian, you were in the Pacific NW. Oddly enough, I may actually be out that way mid-April.

I am. But I'm in the middle of a road trip right now. I heart Toronto. mean-ass drivers but very friendly pedestrians. Tons of food, record stores, and porn.. often all in the same store.

Brian MacDonald, Saturday, 30 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sean- Folk, eh? Oh, well, never mind...

But still, I'll email you for the tour.

Julio Desouza, Saturday, 30 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I heart Toronto. mean-ass drivers but very friendly pedestrians
Depends where you are in the city...in several of the places I haunt regularly, pedestrians are completely clueless and create massive obstructions to any kind of traffic, even pedestrian traffic. Toronto has often been described as an ongoing war between pedestrians, motorists and cyclists, with all of them being equally victimized and obnoxious. I have been all of the above, and I have to concur that it's a free-for-all.

Julio: do you know where you're going to be in the city, yet? Sneaky Dee's is probably a better option if you want a bit of grit, and will be in the College/University area. If you'll be right downtown, I actually don't mind C'est What? for the ambience (and also a good selection of beer too). Further out, there are other options too, but as soon as you get into the areas like Mississauga or Scarborough, I can't offer much.

Sean Carruthers, Saturday, 30 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I didn't know your road trip was bringing you through here Brian. Damn. Sorry I missed you.

Sean, I'm still living downtown (car-less) and as such bound to the TTC - so if it's going to be in the core somewhere, there's a pretty good chance that I can make it. Queen W. or King, or anywhere near the Spadina streetcar line would be especially good for me.

Kim, Saturday, 30 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Beer selection can't be beat at The Beir Market on the Esplande. Its just down from C'est What and has a fairly well shaded patio, they even have chocolate beer, mmm Trapist Monks dabbling in the drunken arts. Though its far away from anywhere decent. I would have said Ted's Wrecking Yard but I guess thats closed down nowdays.
How about Victory Cafe? Just south of Bloor near Honest Eds.

Mr Noodles, Saturday, 30 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Esplanade Bier Markt is indeed one of the more extensive beer selections in the city, and is fairly roomy overall. It's pretty close to Union Station, for those who have to come in from out of downtown, too...but yeah, neither it or C'est What? are overly close to any good record stores. The strip along Front Street in that area has a number of interesting little stores, including an excellent bookstore, though.

Victory Cafe is good, too, just a block away from the rear door or Bathurst station, and pretty close to The Beguiling, perhaps the best comic shop in all of the country, if not North America. Also a couple of antique/vintage places, and a great bookstore with a focus on art.

Sean Carruthers, Saturday, 30 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ps. Yay Kim! I didn't know if you were still on ILM.

Sean Carruthers, Saturday, 30 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ahem,
Vict o ry Cafe Map

I though it was scientifically proven there is nothing of interest in Scarborough except the Zoo. But I've lived in Pickering so I shouldnt talk.

Mr Noodles, Saturday, 30 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yep, I'm still around. I de-lurk here from time to time. Time restraints etc., etc.. I post sort often-ish on ILE though. You ought to swing by over there more often.

Kim, Saturday, 30 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Julio: do you know where you're going to be in the city, yet? Sneaky Dee's is probably a better option if you want a bit of grit, and will be in the College/University area. If you'll be right downtown, I actually don't mind C'est What? for the ambience (and also a good selection of beer too).'

Well, I am going to study at the university of Toronto. I've emailed someone over there who will sort me out with accomodation and I hope that it will be close by. I should know soon.

Julio Desouza, Sunday, 31 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You monkeys missed me. I was up there all last week. You should all meet at The Brass Rail. Y'know. For kids.

JM, Sunday, 31 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

us ecw folk tend to congregate in both toranno and mtl.

cybele, Sunday, 31 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dammit, JM, The Brass Rail is only a block from where I work. While I wouldn't be caught DEAD in there, the point remains that you must have been fairly close by. Why don't y'all tell us you're coming here, dammit?

Sean Carruthers, Sunday, 31 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Didn't think anyone cared...

Where it is you work?

JM, Sunday, 31 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bah to the Brass Rail, Gilley's is by far better, its got the Opera House near by and the DVP.

Mr Noodles, Sunday, 31 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm at a publication just east on Church street, same block, though. I used to see the back entrance to the Brass Rail every day on the way to work, and at lunch time going for noodles along Yonge.

Sean Carruthers, Sunday, 31 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

three weeks pass...
Okay. Revive! Julio will be in town mid-May, which is when Master Noodles will be back in town. So...maybe time to start thinking up a firm plan, yesss? Anyone have any specific requirements?

I'd prefer:
- somewhere that's not deafening, so we can hear each other talk
- someplace either smoke-free or low-smoke, if possible (I'm allergic, but can put up with a bit if necessary)
- someplace with beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer

Over to you.

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So its The Vic and Sneaky Dee's FITE?

Mr Noodles, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm in Little Italy, so anywhere within the downtown core is fine, really...

Mark, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sneaky dee's

dyson, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

When will this be? I wonder if I'll be going down there around that time.

sundar subramanian, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mid-to-late May. Depending on when you're down, I think it would be good to work around that. When will you be here?

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Darn, I was going to suggest The Vic for May 16th (Thursday). Mostly because Damo Sazuki and The Creeping Nobodies are at Lee's that night.
But when are you coming down Sundar?

Mr Noodles, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ummm,
sound of tumble weeds. Keeping this in new answers.

Mr noodles, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OK, I'm trying to arrange a visit for the weekend of the 25th. Sorry for the wait with no word.

sundar subramanian, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Excellet. Kim or Sean wish to pick a date and place?
York does rock but is a bit of a TTC ride to anywhere that isn't Vaughan.

Mr Noodles, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Another revive!

Okay. So, I'm moving on the 24th but we can still try to arrange something for the 25th, if sundar's still planning to be here on that weekend. Just met with Julio tonight and he's good people, so I think everyone will enjoy meeting with him. I'm going to email sundar separately to try to confirm that he's still coming. In the meantime....everyone still good for this upcoming weekend?

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This coming weekend is fine with me.

Julio Desouza, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

25th- No problem.

Julio Desouza, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dang why not. Im not scary Im easily the least scary person with bad grammer here. Though I dont know where.
That remind me anyone good coming in for NXNE anyone notice?

Mr Noodles, Thursday, 23 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sean-name a place and time.

Julio Desouza, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mssr. Noodles is obviously already in the ILM drinkfest spirit. =)

I know I said the 25th but there's been precious little response either here (though admittedly the server has been down) or in my inbox. We can still meet tomorrow night, though if the response is minimal, I'm inclined to say: let's hold off for at least a week, which will allow me to get settled into the new house before I go off drinking/chatting. (Theoretically, I'm supposed to be packing right now, because the movers will be here in 90 minutes.) So tentatively:

Saturday, June 1, around 7 or 8, at Sneaky Dee's?

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

June 1st is good, I gotta ref a soccer tournment in York Region that day so I will defently need a drink after being degraded by soccer moms all day long.
Any of those ECW Press folk still here?

Mr Noodles, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

june 1st, sneaky dee's (7/8 pm) it is.

Julio Desouza, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

awright

dyson, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Excellent! That's Sean, me, noodles and dyson. Calling on Sundar and any other toronto residents.

Julio Desouza, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Excellent!
Specially since I start work on the 3rd, my transition from energetic student to lifeless drone is in full swing.

Mr Noodles, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

count me in too - sneaky dee's will do nicely! and for those not on the emails we had going, myself and a couple other ILM types are launching our own music night this thursday - at a club right near bloor/bathurst. come check it out if you can... info:

http://www.globalpopconspiracy.com/social

rob, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll be there.

Mats Sundin, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Okay...looks like we have a concensus, more or less. Does anyone have a time preference between 7 and 8? I'm inclined to say 7 if you want to have something to eat (I may be in for the fajitas, mmmm).

It strikes me that we may not know how to find each other, so I'm going to include this:
http://www.armchair.mb.ca/~oneiros/pix/sean-small.jpg
That's me. Hopefully I'll be there right from the beginning.

(ps. If that's really you, Mats, you're certainly welcome to join, but make sure you guys win the rest of your games against the 'canes, because we probably don't want to hear you moaning about it... ;)

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ya matts. did it occur to you we may still be in the playoffs? a little thing called the stanly cup, jerk!

darcy tucker, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is Sean Carruthers Ed O'Brien away from his day job?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sean c = rowr

mark s, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yer both insane k bye

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

see you at 7pm.

When I met Sean last week I thought he looked like Steve Albini!

Julio Desouza, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If I can reschedule all my appointments for Fri and Sat and if I can confirm a place to stay Sat night, I should probably be able to actually make it this time.

sundar subramanian, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yayyyy Sundar!

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Since Mats and Darcy Tucker are going to be busy hopefully maybe we should take Pat Quinn out instead, he cant be travelling too far now.

Mr Noodles, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

seriously, what must the rest of the ilm world think of us. we can't even plan a meeting without resorting to hockey humor. uhgh.

dyson, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Its only taken two months two.

Mr Noodles, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We are too polite, and defer to others. Not like those ultra-direct NYC people: "WE'RE GOING TO THIS CLUB OR I'LL KILL YOU." "Okay, just so long as I can talk about Ally's ass!"

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And also I took my time to arrive from england (I didn't want to miss this one as i had the london meeting). But its on now. And Sundar might be coming along!

Julio Desouza, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We can still gossip about Ally's ass. Though it feels like an unoffical meetings since Ned, IL* commando wont be there.

Mr Noodles, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

shit I guess mats and tucker can join us :(

Mr Noodles, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm there, though I might arrive closer to 8 than to 7. Anyone have a more specific address/cross street/subway stop/bus # for Sneaky Dee's?

sundar subramanian, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sneaky Dee's is on the south side of College west of Spadina. Best way to get it is just walk west on College from Spadina and if you see Italian flags (starting around Clinton St) you've gone too far. Subway stop on Young/University line is Queens Park, if you want to swoop in from the Bloor line I don't know. Maquest map should help guide you but I forget what the intersection is there, I have my own little way of walking around TO so Im not much help.

Mr Noodles, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Coming in on the Bloor/Danforth subway line, stop at Bathurst Station and transfer to the 511 streetcar, get off at College and it's kittycorner from you. If you're coming down on the University/Yonge line, get off at either College or Queen's Park station and transfer to the westbound 506 streetcar.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

To clarify: Sneaky Dee's is right at the corner of College and Bathurst, southeast corner.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Allrighty. It looks like things are still on. I'll be there closer to 7 or so. I'll try to grab one of the larger tables somewhere in the middle...we've got more than 4 people, right? At the very worst, look up front, we can probably make a bigger table up there or grab a couple of smaller ones. If that crappy photo up there ain't enough to make you recognize me, I'm probably going to be wearing a Melody Farms gas jockey-style shirt with a Big Black t-shirt underneath. See y'all there. (ps. are you coming, Ned? mark s? Mats? ;)

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, if you're flying me out there...

Ned Raggett, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ILM meet-up post mortem: a success, more or less -- though a lot of us were initially scattered around about the place to start off with, we ended up at the same table by the end: Dyson and Sundar started off all alone at their own tables but eventually got caught up in our vortex...Mr. Noodles was met at the front door, and Rob found us on his own. We're not sure if other people showed up and took off in disgust when they couldn't find us or not...Mats, Grim Kim and Mark, were you there? And Ned, dammit, I sent that ticket...where were you? (ps. to Ally: in proper ILM meetup spirit, we discussed your ass-- lucky you).

Sean Carruthers, Saturday, 1 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

By the way, thanks all for coming!

Sean Carruthers, Sunday, 2 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what have you done with our beloved JULIO? he has started raving about JOURNEY!!

mark s, Sunday, 2 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark- These guys have BRAINWASHED me. Fuck derek bailey: its CANADIAN HEAVY MEATL

Julio Desouza, Sunday, 2 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark- These guys have BRAINWASHED me. Fuck derek bailey: its CANADIAN HEAVY MEATL from now on!!!

Julio Desouza, Sunday, 2 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, another Chilliwack phan!

Mr Noodles, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and that reminds me you were asking about shows coming up while in Toronto, while NXNE is on this Thursday through Saturday and while its a cheapass ripoff of SXSW its still got some decent acts. Victory Cafe on Markham Street has (9pm)A Northern Chorus and (11pm) Black Eyes on Thursday and is a short walk to Lee's Palace where BRMC take the stage at 12. The Horseshoe has the token showcase lineup on Saturday. Um Friday is dismal, absolutely dismal, worst lineup I've seen across the board, sigh. um so yeah its NXNE

Mr Noodles, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thanks Noodles. I'll try and get to some of them.

Julio Desouza, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you guys missed a great show in metalwood afterwards tho.

dyson, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I had to be up in Newmarket for 8:30 kickoff sadly or I'd be there.

Mr Noodles, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
