Has anyone else got this? What do you reckon? As Jeff W said, it's fantastic, yet definitely represents a fairly 'dry' non-pop, non-club take on electronic music of the last 40 years or so. The late 90's/early 2000s is a touch over-represented too.

Anyway, here's the track listing if you don't know :

Jeff or anyone - what's the Stereolab track from? There's no Chicago House on it, which seems like an omission. I'd have liked to see Gary Numan too! Still, roll on Electronic 02.

Dr. C, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As far as I can tell (unless it was a rare tour only song from recently) the Stereolab track is either "brand" new or an older unreleased song.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I got it last week and really like it. It's certainly an easier listen than that 'OHM' comp a while back...

DG, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

heh, it's got that IF track. Woo!

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The year of copyright for the Stereolab track is '96, if that's any indicator. Altogether, it's definitely a fun listen. I had been curious about that Schneider TM vs. Kpt. Michi. Gan Smiths cover. And I finally have something with Terre Thamlitz on it; I thought The Wire made him up. Negatives: "Being Boiled" and "Warm Leatherette" again?

Andy K, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've got it and like it. I also agree that it's much easier listening than OHM.

Leigh, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"It's an easier listen than OHM!!!!"

Well duh.

Bob Zemko, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I reckon it does an impressive job of packing all that on two discs. And it is genuinely enjoyable to listen to.

So this is an ongoing project, then?

clive, Saturday, 30 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Stereolab track was from the Japanese edition of Aluminum Tunes.

OHIWANTITIWANTIT. Okay. Ahem. I can't find a listing for this at hmv.com, so may not be available in Canada yet. Anyone have more info, notably the catalogue number?

geeta, Friday, 19 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just got it too, but haven't listened yet...but I don't have to listen to tell all y'all that it's GRATE.

Sean Carruthers, Saturday, 20 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's a great collection but I'm amazed at how much the 80s are ignored.

some tracks I would like to see on '02' Regard:

Donna Summer ~ 'Love To Love You Baby'
Cabaret Votaire ~ 'Don't Argue'
Africa Bambaataa ~ 'Zulu Nation Throwdown'
Laurie Anderson ~ 'O Superman'
Freak Machine ~ 'Streetdance'
PiL ~ 'Death Disco'
Sugar Hill Gang ~ 'Rappers Delight'
Front 242 ~ 'Headhunter' Mantronix ~ 'Flesh is the Word'
In The Nursery ~ 'A Validiction'
M/A/R/R/S ~ 'Pump Up The Volume'
Public Enemy ~ 'Don't Believe the Hype'
Acid Tracks ~ 'The Phuture'
A Guy Called Gerald ~ 'Voodoo Ray'
Shut Up & Dance ~ 'Raving, I'm Raving'
Skinny Puppy ~ 'Worlock'
The Orb ~ 'Little Fluffy Clouds'
The Prodigy ~ 'Charly'
Dem 2 ~ 'Destiny'
Technotronic ~ 'Pump Up The Jam'
Aphex Twin ~ 'Anologue Bubblebath'
Josh Wink ~ 'Higher State of Conciousness'
Squarepusher ~ 'Port Rhombus'
Tricky ~ 'Ponderosa'
Unique 3 ~ 'The Theme'
Boards of Canada ~ 'Music is Math'
The Streets ~ 'Weak Become Heroes'

Okay, some v.obv. choices, and, again, too many 90s tracks, but it would go to address the balance vis a vis 'dry' electronica over populist/dance/etc electronica.

DavidM, Sunday, 21 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

808 State required, pliz. Something from the first, IMO..."Cubik" perhaps?

Sean Carruthers, Sunday, 21 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Probably would pick a different Cab V track, too. And if we couldn't have both, I'd probably switch out Skinny Puppy (much as I like 'em) for Severed Heads.

Sean Carruthers, Sunday, 21 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I got it too. Not thrilled, but it fills a few gaps for me. heh.

for 02 - Space "Magic Fly". The half-cover of it on Felix da Housecat just makes me want to hear the original. When was that a hit 76? 77?

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 22 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Woah! I completely overlooked this thread first (and second) times out. Still, gives me a chance to comment on the comments.

Interesting that Dr.C should say it is fairly non-pop. Having sat miserably through Clicks & Cuts 2 just a few weeks before I got this, the thing that struck me really forcefully about this comp is how commercial, how much damn FUN these two CDs are. Only the Faust and Farben contributions let the side down (which surprised me - and in another context I'd probably like both of these tracks).

The other interesting thing about the set is that it doesn't sound all that disparate. In the sleevenotes the compilers say they tried to draw out different strands of electronica, but kept on finding connections between the artists, to the extent that in the end they just gave up. (Also, they say they had enough material already for a "Volume 2"). I think this comes across well listening to the discs. The effect is helped by intelligent sequencing - the compilers seem to have gone out of their way to pair off tracks with similar sounds at the 'join' - my favourite example: the end of the Raymond Scott and the beginning of Schneider TM.

Yes, I agree that, *if* the idea was to present an overview of all electronic music, the balance between recent and old stuff is skewed too much in favour of the former. But I'm not convinced that this was the idea - I think it was more: "this is where we seem to be now, but let's see what happens if you recontextualise the present in the past". (Answer: it's all a lot more homogenous than we thought).

Jeff W, Monday, 22 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If not 'Magic Fly' then definitely Popcorn's 'Hot Butter'. I'd have stuck Telstar on vol 1 instead of the other Joe Meek track.

Jeff - yes it IS fun, but ditching say 3 of the more recent trax which (to my ears) cover very similar ground would have made space for a couple of pioneering techno/house tracks. The To Rococo Rot track is fantastic - are they always this good?
