Back in my troubled 'God bless David Gray, Counting Crows and the very edgy Jason Mraz' days, I fell in love with "Crazy Game 0f Poker" and picked up "1n Between N0w and Then." Even then, I recognized it as the most terrible album i had actually spent money on. It was over-produced, pseudo-reggae at its worst. The vocals were grating, and the songs were either boring or annoying. I still want my money back.
In their defense, my brother (a big fan), met them at a hotel, and he said that they were incredibly kind people. But that's not defending the music. Also worth noting is the lengthiness of live versions of "Crazy Game 0f Poker," which supposedly reach over 20 minutes. Really.
I just offended millions of frat boys. Oops.

It's not so much a "Defend the Indefensible" as a good old, Soviet-style recant, no?
50,000,000 frat boys couldn't be wrong...

In this case, no. I'm writing--or at least supervising the writing of--an article about the band. I'm stupidly paranoid about my teacher finding this (I often go by 'tape store,' but i forgot to google-proof it). I have a feeling said teacher would be angry at me. Yes, it's a stupid thought, and I've already ruined my attempt at google-proofing (though a search of O.A.R. tends to bring up things about oars more than it does about the band).
I also don't really understand the point of this thread. So you liked something you thought was supposed to be cool at the time;
No, I listened to a few tracks of early work (i.e. Crazy Game), enjoyed them very much and bought the band's newest album at the time. I hated it then, and I hate now...I really don't think that it has anything to do with coolness.
now you've switched allegiances, and it doesn't seem so cool any more, so you're doing a full 180 with a cathartic self "outing" and a total evisceration of the product in question (or the questionable product).
Not really. Once I bought the album, I started to hate them (not personally, obviously). It's not a new revelation at all.
On my staff, there are many fans of the band, and they have recently been playing their music--quite loudly--in the lab we work at. This constant blaring of such blatantly bad music, I guess, is really what caused me to question what anyone finds good in this band. Why am I even writing about this group? Why do people care? That's why I started this thread, and that's also why I think it totally fits under 'defending the indefensible.' Oh, and don't tell me to ask my fellow staff writers...all i ever get in reply is 'They're great tunes, man.'

if you're supervising the writing of an article about them, why not focus on the fact that they become popular almost entirely through mp3 sharing and word of mouth? there are ways to get around having to pretend that you dig a band that you actually find totally boring. i should know. i do it almost every week.
