Ok. I broke the end off my Gibson SG (cos I'm v stupid) and what I'm wondering is, do I have to pay the US 600 or so to get it properly fixed or can I just superglue the thing back together? I'm a v bad player.

The "headstock" I believe it's called actually, a common break on this model/all models? I think

dang. um, would it really cost 600 bucks to get it fixed? that seems excessive. i'd think that you would have a really difficult time getting it to not go out of tune every five seconds. but maybe you have some seriously amazing superglue.

ps: that sucks. i play an SG knockoff that i adore, and if i had an actual gibson and i had that happen i'd probably cry. a lot. maybe more than when i spilled iced tea on my powerbook. but probably not.

I did that once too! (well it was beer not iced tea but yeah)

If you superglue your headstock back on it will snap off once you try and put strings on it, and if your best repair idea involves superglue, you definitely shouldn't try and fix it yourself. (I say this as someone whose best repair ideas often involve tape, FWIW.) But good god man, how did you do that to the poor thing?

SGs are notorious for snapping at the headstock. I'd found a vintage 1970 model in a basement, and when I had it appraised, the dealer noticed found a headstock repair. That knocked about $500 off the value. Sold it for $800. If this is a modern model, I'm not sure a $600 repair would be worth it. But if you can find a cheaper professional repair, it will probably look and play fine.

Looks like it snapped off cleanly and should to be able to be reattached using a couple of rods.

That was a guess btw.

I've had a snapped headsock on my old Ibanez Jem about ten years ago, after a fall. I brought it to a specialised guitar builder, and he fixed it for my using some industrial superglue. Haven't had any problem with it eversince, it seems stronger than ever. He also finished it off really well (sanding and stuff) so you hardly see anything of it.

Cost me about 200 euro's in todays money, but worth every cent.

I've been using that guitar as my main performing guitar for the last ten years.

...and he fixed it for me...

you should convert it to a steinberger headstock.

should be on imm!!

Just pay to get it fixed. Otherwise, you'l just bugger up the guitar. As noted above, SG's are notoriously prone to this -- very flat thin bodies with the inclining headstock is just screaming ot get snapped. $600 sounds steep. Call around to other repair places and get a quote. If the break is clean, a decent luthier can repair it.

It's pretty clean, I think. Fucked that this is gonna most likely keep happening. Thanks all! I've reached the same conclusion I pretty much already had but it's good to have it confirmed. Yes Roxy it should've been on that but I didn't wanna flatter myself.

Eppy I was drunk and in a poor temper

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 17 September 2006 05:55 (nineteen years ago)

I only paid US 150 or so for it in the first place, it should be said

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 17 September 2006 05:55 (nineteen years ago)

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Just find another crackhead who'll sell you their Gibson for under $200 and you're good.
