legendary artist, legendary instrument

Howard Jones and Jean Michel Jarre e.g. were into Synths. But what Synths are legendary, good-enough-for-museums-rarities, legendary as their artists? And other instruments: Which guitar did Johnny Cash play etc...

michael eichhammer (mrrightnow), Saturday, 16 September 2006 10:17 (nineteen years ago)

The most legendary synth will always be the original Moog. Another legendary Moog is the Mini-Moog. And I guess the Yamaha DX7 is kind of "legendary" for its impact on mid-to-late 80s pop aestetics, even though personally I hate it.

As for guitars, there is the Rickenbacker 12 string, used by lots of huge acts.

Radio Birdman's Deniz Tek plays the Crestwood Custom Epiphone that was given to him by Fred 'Sonic' Smith of the MC5, apparently. (except... if you google pictures of them both, they played different guitars? or am I missing something?)

I think the complete name of the actual legendary Fairlight instrument was the Fairlight CMI. Certainly important anyway.

Could the Gizmo be considered as legendary? It never quite took off, but it was unique at least.

Frank Zappa owned and repaired the guitar Hendrix set on fire at Monterey Pop.

Slash uses the sameLes Paul all the time.

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 16 September 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

Slash has a Gibson signature issue now, but from what I understand the one that he made famous back in the Appetite for Destruction days was actually a custom built copy not built by Gibson. I can't remember the builders name, but eventually the guy was sued and the Les Paul copies he built are worth big cash.

I think the white Vox Phantom Ian Curtis played is the most iconic guitar I can think of.

That 30s Gibson Nick Lucas Special Bob Dylan played in the mid 60s (Don't Look Back, etc.), he eventually broke it by shutting it in a case with a bunch of harmonicas on top of it. Whoops.

This whole page is pretty good if you're interested in Bob's guitars:

Frank Zappa owned and repaired the guitar Hendrix set on fire at Monterey Pop.

I thought it was a similarly ignited Hendrix Strat from the Miami Pop Festival.

Who was I just reading about on here recently that wrote the Woody "This Machine" stuff on their guitar? It was someone ridiculous.

I read an interview w/Tek where he mentioned having Fred's gtr along w/other Epiphones. In Sonic's Rendezvous Band Fred played a customised Rickenbacker: a 3/4 body grafted with a 12 string neck restrung for 6. Awesome. Though a couple times he dragged out the Moserite he played on Kick Out The Jams, or an indentical one. I think he played the Crestwood circa Back In The USA.

Donovan also (though he omitted the "fascists" bit to avoid offending anyone).

harvey.w (harvey.w), Sunday, 17 September 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

Not that I ever had any respect for Donovan, but if I did, his reluctance to offend fascists would have snuffed it.
