just watched this for the first time last night and it was not very good? i enjoyed it as a portrait of place-time but the film itself left something to be desired (editing, for one)
― bRon To Run (MaresNest), Tuesday, April 19, 2011 1:10 PM (fourteen years ago)
he seemed like the kind of asshole who would get his mitts on a microphone and monologue until someone cut him off. just insufferable. was wondering if other people felt similarly.
― Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Friday, 6 March 2026 18:29 (three months ago)
My close friend actually had a really cute story about meeting Thurston when he was a teenager in LA and Thurston was friendly and recommended a Germs album, and then a little while later ran into him again at a show and thanked him, and Thurston was cool.
― sarahell, Friday, 6 March 2026 18:51 (three months ago)
He must be better one on one vs in front of a camera. He was annoying more than assholish tbh.
― Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Friday, 6 March 2026 18:57 (three months ago)
I haven’t seen this movie since I screened it at college in 1994? 1995? (As in, film projector pointed at screen) …. So I don’t remember Thurston coming off as a dick. I think I remember thinking he was cool and had the attitude many people (including me) had at the time … If you watch Kill Your Idols, you can see where the attitude “comes from” by watching the parts with Lydia Lunch, Glenn Branca, and a couple of the others who were central to the scene when Thurston was just an enthusiastic newcomer.
― sarahell, Friday, 6 March 2026 18:59 (three months ago)
I never interacted with Moore until I saw him at my first indoor show following the pandemic. It may have been the good vibes that came with performing again after COVID upended the music business, but I saw him twice after and he was totally cool to his fans, especially quite a few college-age kids he happily posed with for photos.
― birdistheword, Friday, 6 March 2026 19:20 (three months ago)
Interviewed the band around 1987, and boy did Thurston do most of the talking, and was very giddy to derail into the minutia of his record collection. More excitably nerdy than annoying, like a six year old explaining dinosaurs, assuming you found it just as amusing to contemplate the Black Oak Arkansas record that came with a property deed in their hometown.
One thing streaming has wrought is that, in these kinds of conversations, it is much harder to be hyperbolic about Black Oak Arkansas et al.
― bendy, Friday, 6 March 2026 19:34 (three months ago)
haha I specifically remember that interview because of the property deed detail!

Not sure if I have confessed this on ilx before, but somehow when I watched this scene as a teen my brain short-circuited and I confused Amherst for Ambridge. I thought they were making some sort of oblique joke about long-running BBC Radio 4 soap opera The Archers. I mean, Kurt Cobain was really into Scottish indiepop, why couldn't J Mascis be into quaint rural dramas?
― emil.y, Friday, 6 March 2026 19:46 (three months ago)
lol
i don't think it matters if he was cool to some people at some time -- he was annoying in this movie and that is all i said
― Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Friday, 6 March 2026 19:52 (three months ago)
I've been thinking about what you said, and how I didn't feel that way at the time. I think to me they just came across as a bunch of cool bands having fun in somewhat absurd ways, and the sort of guy who would "get his mitts on a microphone and monologue" was fun, funny and at least a bit impressive (I certainly wouldn't be comfortable doing that, but I'd like to be able to). It was only much later that I'd come to associate that kind of man with arrogance, boorishness and chauvinism (in the "man taking up all the space in the room" way). I think I would have too much nostalgic affection to see it that way on a rewatch now, but if I saw it for the first time in 2026 it is definitely possible I would feel similarly.
― emil.y, Friday, 6 March 2026 20:51 (three months ago)
I always thought Thurston came across more as an excitable dork that wants to talk your ear off than annoying, but I would 100% rather hang with Kim or Lee.
― better than ezra collective soul asylum (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 6 March 2026 21:00 (three months ago)
I had never seen it til yesterday— but I was 16 in 1991 and it reminded me of feeling alienated and unwelcome. The environment was so insidery back then and I was decidedly not on the inside.
And like you said — the boys were always hogging the air in the room. That’s how it was from my pov.
― Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Friday, 6 March 2026 21:09 (three months ago)
Thinnest line between excited dork and annoying.
Fact: usually women are called annoying.
