Aggressive punk blue grass anyone? I'm looking

Hey people.

I am absolutely sick and tired of boring hardcore, metal in the punk rock and chocolate in my peanut butter... well, not the last one.

Does anyone know of any bands that actually play blue grass, traditional American music from the 20's, 30's, 40's or what was called "country music" before that term became the indefensible domain of smirking pricks with no talent and cowboy hats, THAT is played in a ferocious manner, like a punk rock before that term became pretty meaningless???

I don't want ironic gimmick bands, I want the real deal.

Anyone know anybody???

I always thought of Violent Femmes as kinda fitting into this a bit - especially some of the Blind Leading the Naked and (less so) 3

Doesn't playing bluegrass music from the 20s 30s and 40s today kind of make you a novelty band by definition? I mean maybe not an "ironic" one.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Monday, 18 September 2006 01:40 (nineteen years ago)

not really sure what you're looking for, but Steve Earle's record with bluegrassers the Del McCoury Band, The Mountain, may fit the bill

This is really pretty good, thanks Scott! I'm going to get their album from eMusic as soon as my downloads recharge.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Monday, 18 September 2006 01:59 (nineteen years ago)

The first two songs both have that Neil Young "Out On The Weekend" groove, which is a VERY good thing.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Monday, 18 September 2006 02:01 (nineteen years ago)

there's a Minnesota act called (um) Trampled by Turtles that plays bluegrassy folk stuff at about 150 bpm.

I need to be very clear that this is not my thing in any way.

geoff (gcannon), Monday, 18 September 2006 02:03 (nineteen years ago)

BTW, what we call "bluegrass" music was actually in no way "traditional." It was a highly commercial hybrid of appalachian music, blues and jazz.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Monday, 18 September 2006 02:08 (nineteen years ago)

I have an MP3 of John Hiatt covering "I Wanna Be Sedated," that's pretty good.

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 18 September 2006 02:16 (nineteen years ago)

when I was 15 I told the guy I was taking guitar lessons from that I wanted to start a bluegrass punk band, but I only said that because he was a douche and I wanted to piss him off

(I didn't go through with it, so I can't help you now)

Lazy Comet (plsmith), Monday, 18 September 2006 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks for J&J&the pinetops Scott, beautiful music.

Good stuff everyone, what I am looking for are bands currently producing music, who is doing for blue grass, "old timey music" and early country, what Gun Club and X did for early r&r and country.

Keep going and many thanks

You're discounting a huge niche market for this kind of thing, especially overseas.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

And in reference to the original question, have you tried flogging molly? It uses irish folk music, not bluegrass, but I think it might be up your alley.

BR-549 used to put on some awesome shows in Nashville with crazy-ass Hendrix-like fiddle playing. Then they got signed and their sound got kind of "packaged", if you know what I mean.

Edward III (edward iii), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

Doo-Rag, surely? I saw them support Jon Spencer once and they rocked so hard they made the Blues Explosion seem timid by comparison. Happy days.

Also these guys: http://www.myspace.com/pinehillhaints, seem to match the description pretty well. They played in Sheffield one time and I didn't go to see them, but from what I gathered they are basically Thrasher kids playing bluegrass.

Buy yourself a Jr Gone Wild album or two and get this phase over with.

Handsome Ned and Kd Lang's first two albums may or may not work for you either. Oh Cowpunk, how I don't miss you.

How 'bout The Gourds? There's a video of their cover of Snoop's "Gin and Juice" @ y0utub3.
