I anxiously await the rap blogs' take on this.

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 18 September 2006 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

OK I just realized how good this is

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 19 September 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

Huh, this isn't bad at all. Totally a "Pentiums" retread but he does pack it pretty full of good stuff even if it's mostly a string of cliches. Could be longer, too. But way way better than anything I thought Al was capable at this point in his career.

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

there's something so sweet about Al. I guess I just admire the way he so clearly loves the songs he parodies, like he heard this song and couldn't get it out of his head....he's always so studious about mimicking all the details and lyrical phrasing of a song, he's not lazy about it at all...also, the way he keeps his ears open...esp. for a guy whose peak was aruguably 20 years ago, he seems to hear things he can relate to in Houston rap or grunge or whatever the big songs of the day were....

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

Wasn't it Kurt C. who said that if Weird Al reworked a song of yours then you knew you were big? I like that theory.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

Matt H totally OTM. This is like the billionth Weird Al song that takes potshots at nerd culture (including the James Blunt parody that just came out like a month ago!) -- but his attention to detail and general adeptness with the material are to be praised.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's less taking potshots at nerd culture and more "writing what you know" though, don't you think?

Eppy (Eppy), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

Could be longer, too

No, all his songs should be less than 3 mins. Unless there are gargling solos.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

does he still do the polkas on 45 type songs on each album? the last one i remembered was a nu-metal one...

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's less taking potshots at nerd culture and more "writing what you know" though, don't you think?

Same thing. I mean, he does in a sweet, self-deprecating way, for sure. But this is definitely a favorite topic of his, which grows stale after a while.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

Aw, Al did a pretty fine job with this one. Much better than "All About the Pentiums": "MC Escher - that's my favorite MC."

ng-unit (ng-unit), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 15:13 (nineteen years ago)

Yes this is much better than all about the pentiums that song sucks and is not funny and white and nerdy is funny which means that the new song is better.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

love this, love weird al.

White & Nerdy
------------
Parody of "Ridin'" by Chamillionaire
New lyrics by Al Yankovic

They see me mowin'
My front lawn
I know they're all thinking I'm so white and nerdy
Think I'm just too white and nerdy
Think I'm just too white and nerdy
Can't you see I'm white and nerdy?
Look at me, I'm white and nerdy
I wanna roll with
The gangstas
But so far they all think I'm too white and nerdy
Think I'm just too white and nerdy
Think I'm just too white and nerdy
I'm just too white and nerdy.
Really really white and nerdy.

First in my class here at MIT
Got skills, I'm a champion at D&D
MC Escher - that's my favorite MC
Keep your 40, I'll just have an Earl Grey tea
My rims never spin, to the contrary
You'll find that they're quite stationary
All of my action figures are cherry
Steven Hawking's in my library
My MySpace page is all totally pimped out
Got people beggin' for my top eight spaces
Yo, I know pi to a thousand places
Ain't got no grills but I still wear braces
I order all of my sandwiches with mayonnaise
I'm a whiz at Minesweeper - I could play for days
Once you see my sweet moves you're gonna stay amazed
My fingers' movin' so fast I'll set the place ablaze
There's no killer app I haven't run
At Pascal, well I'm number one
Do vector calculus just for fun
I ain't got a gat but I got a soldering gun
Happy Days is my favorite theme song
I could sure kick your butt in a game of ping pong
I'll ace any trivia quiz you bring on
I'm fluent in JavaScript as well as Klingon

They see me roll on
My Segway
I know in my heart they think I'm white and nerdy
Think I'm just too white and nerdy
Think I'm just too white and nerdy
Can't you see I'm white and nerdy
Look at me, I'm white and nerdy
I'd like to roll with
The gangstas
Although it's apparent I'm too white and nerdy
Think I'm just too white and nerdy
Think I'm just too white and nerdy
I'm just too white and nerdy
How'd I get so white and nerdy

I've been browsin', inspectin'
X-Men comics, you know I collect 'em
The pens in my pocket, I must protect 'em
My ergonomic keyboard never leaves me bored
Shopping online for deals on some writable media
I edit Wikipedia
I memorized Holy Grail really well
I can recite it right now and have you ROTFLOL
I got a business doing websites
When my friends need some code, who do they call?
I do HTML for 'em all
Even made a homepage for my dog
Yo, I got myself a fanny pack
They were havin' a sale down at The Gap
Spend my nights with a roll of bubble wrap
Pop, pop, hope no one sees me
Gettin' freaky
I'm nerdy in the extreme
And whiter than sour cream
I was in AV Club and Glee Club and even the Chess Team
Only question I
Ever thought was hard
Was do I like Kirk
Or do I like Picard
Spend every weekend at the Renaissance Fair
Got my name on my underwear

They see me strollin'
They laughin'
And rollin' their eyes 'cause I'm so white and nerdy
Just because I'm white and nerdy
Just because I'm white and nerdy
All because I'm white and nerdy
Holy cow, I'm white and nerdy
I wanna bowl with
The gangstas
But, oh well, it's obvious I'm white and nerdy
Think I'm just too white and nerdy
Think I'm just too white and nerdy
I'm just too white and nerdy
Look at me, I'm white and nerdy

does he still do the polkas on 45 type songs on each album? the last one i remembered was a nu-metal one...

he does and someone on YouTube already got the new one and synched it up to the videos of the original songs:

OH MY GOD!

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

btw, "White And Nerdy" sounds like it's using the Play'n'Skillz beat from Cham's original, which makes sense since instrumentals of any rap single are widely available now, but if so, is this the first time Weird Al has just done vocals over the original track instead of trying to recreate it as faithfully as possible?

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

I'd love to see Al's band playing that shit live though. They're really some talented guys!

Incidentally, if anyone hasn't checked out that YouTube polka video, do so immediately. I want them to do that for all his polkas! This is the first one that really makes me feel old tho in the sense of not knowing a bunch of the songs. :( I also think the polka thing works better when he selects the most inane songs that think they're the deepest - "Polkas On 45" was wonderful for really tearing classic rock's pretensions apart and sucking all the gravitas out of previously "deep" tracks. You really can't get the same effect from, say "Let's Get It Started."

The nu-metal one was really bad because it made it seem like Al was out of touch enough to believe that Staind and the White Stripes belonged to the same musical movement or even the same "Angry White Boy" audience. Oof.

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, here's "Polka Power" in the same format: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yugldxpRDMo

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

They both got played on KROQ, they were the same audience.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry Ned, that's nonsense from where I was sitting at the time (freshman year, college dining hall). The kids who thought that acoustic Staind song with Fred Durst was like deep and shit and practiced playing it on their acoustic guitars in the dorm stairwells and waiting to move into their dude pad apartments had ZERO overlap with the kids who bought White Blood Cells and went out to see Requiem For A Dream and drove Jettas and had already moved into ratty houses off campus.

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

OMG "CANDY SHOP"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 19 September 2006 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think AWBP was supposed to be strictly nu-metal

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 19 September 2006 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

"Canadian Idiot" - 2:25
Parody of "American Idiot" by Green Day

roffle

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

the polka is kinda off tho, like he totally should have chosen "MY HUMPS"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 19 September 2006 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe I'm giving him too much credit but I assume he realized that parodying "My Humps" is totally pointless.

Eppy (Eppy), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 20:09 (nineteen years ago)

So apparently all the polkas (except maybe the all-Stones one?) have been done in this format. They're mostly delicious, although yeah, it rarely gets as good as the "Candy Shop" bit.

Angry White Boy Polka - not strictly nu-metal, maybe, but surely strictly "Angry White Boy" no? See also, Al's involvement in Ben Folds's "Rockin' The Suburbs" and its rips on Fred Durst and Korn. Nothing about The Hives seems to have much to do with being an angry white boy to me...

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

But "My Humps" would be awesome as a polka!

CHORUS OF DEEP-VOICED ALS: "Whatcha gonna do with all that junk? All that junk inside your trunk?"
LUDICROUSLY HAPPY POLKA AL: "I'mma get-get-get-get you drunk! Get you love drunk off my hump!"

And all the while Al's accordion plays the synth hook in the background.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 19 September 2006 22:14 (nineteen years ago)

The kids who thought that acoustic Staind song with Fred Durst was like deep and shit and practiced playing it on their acoustic guitars in the dorm stairwells and waiting to move into their dude pad apartments had ZERO overlap with the kids who bought White Blood Cells and went out to see Requiem For A Dream and drove Jettas and had already moved into ratty houses off campus.

And then it all became pop radio.

you guys the whole 'trapped in the closet' parody is incredible. for serious. and seeing r kelly in concert totally justifies its 11-minute length.

Considering he almost always makes 2 videos per album, and he's already got a video out for "Don't Download This Song" (which sucks), chances are slim.
