Is that the best thing Steve Miller ever did? Wonderful song (I know he didn't write it, but his version is awesome). One of the great pop-rock singles of that time.

This is the look Morris Day and I give to everyone who choses the Steve Miller one.

Dude, that's the look Morris Day gives the mailman.

Steve Miller has been an abomination since about 1970. (I'll rep for "Space Cowboy" and little else from him.) The Bird-man wins this one by miles.

Jesse! Nah, now Jerome!

Me thinks SM's Jungle Love >> Space Cowboy

The question to everyones answer
Is usually asked from within
But the patterns of the rain
And the truth they contain
Have written my life on your skin

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 18 September 2006 21:53 (nineteen years ago)

All I can hear is Morris cackle "Ha ha ha ha ha ha hor!" at the question.

EZ Snappin (EZSnappin), Monday, 18 September 2006 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

at first i thought this was close, but then i realized i was thinking of "swingtown." morris & jerome in an easy strut.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 18 September 2006 23:47 (nineteen years ago)

wow. i never paid attention to the lyrics of the sm song. tim's post prompted me to look it up and my love for it has tripled as a result. is that what stephin merritt would sound like if he rocked?

you treat me like i was your ocean/you swim in my blood when it's warm.

damn.

who did write it, tim?

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 18 September 2006 23:57 (nineteen years ago)

jonzun crew "space cowboy" > steve miller "space cowboy" > time "jungle love" > steve miller "jungle love" (which i still like a lot, though it's not nearly one of the best songs on his best-of). ("take the money and run" is #1 of course)

xhuxk (xheddy), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 00:07 (nineteen years ago)

It's credited to L. Turner and G. Douglas - I don't know who they are.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 00:10 (nineteen years ago)

aha. meet greg douglass and lonnie turner, steve miller sidemen and rock journeymen.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 00:17 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't Miller call this his punk-rock tune?

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 00:50 (nineteen years ago)

Such a rad guitar tone on the SM song.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 01:30 (nineteen years ago)

i was listening to some classic rock station a couple weeks ago, and steve miller talked about how the songwriter (can't remember which one)brought in his song just as the album was being finished, and they cranked the song out in about an hour just in time for inclusion. fun song! i don't think i have ever heard the Time song, maybe i have and i'm just not familiar with the title. the only real impression they made on me was visual, can't really recall any of their songs....

Yaaaiiis.

Joe (Joe), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 01:50 (nineteen years ago)

Not my favorite Time song (I'll always prefer "Jerk Out"), but in a pinch I'll take it over SM.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 01:58 (nineteen years ago)

Alfred -

I've been trying to convince everyone that "777-9311" is THE classic Time song, but I'll accept "Jerk Out", or even "Release It". "Jungle Love" is mighty fine though.

EZ Snappin (EZSnappin), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 10:43 (nineteen years ago)

Hmm. Well, if we were talking '74 Kool and the Gang rather than '84 Morris Day, my answer'd be different. But "Jungle Love" is my single favourite Steve Miller song, and it's got a real unique lead-guitar-as-rhythm-guitar style that I wish I could copy. And I never gave a shit about The Time. (And the overpraised Morris/Jerome repartee in "Purple Rain" was only enjoyable in relation to the rest of the flick, which really sucked apart from the musical numbers. So there.) So, at least until I take the time to listen to The Time again (which this thread has motivated me to do, congratulations!), the Miller track takes it.

(And in the interest of pledging my continued grooveallegiance to The Funk, I'll take Sly's "Spaced Cowboy" over Miller's near-eponymous track. In a second.)

M. Agony Von Bontee (M. Agony Von Bontee), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

"Spaced Cowboy" is the one with the yodel, right? If so, best song of all time.
