How often has this happened?

I know about "The Power Of Love" (Huey Lewis & The News/Jennifer Rush) and "I Turn To You" (Mel C., Christina Aguilera). Are there others?

Don't forget "the Power Of Love" by Frankie Goes To Hollywood - that was about the same time no?

Also: Cast/Supergrass - "Alright"

If you are stretching things a bit. That song was a hit in late 1984 while the two others were in the autumn of 1985.

Cast/Supergrass OTM btw.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 10:07 (nineteen years ago)

Plus there were "9 to 5" (Dolly Parton) and "Nine To Five" (Sheena Easton)

The latter title was changed to "Morning Train" in the US to avoid confusion.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 10:09 (nineteen years ago)

not the same title, but i remember at the time thinking it was funny that "I.O.U." and "Aeiou Sometimes Y" were both big on the radio at roughly the same time.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 10:38 (nineteen years ago)

and that i liked them both so much! two of my fave 12-inches to this day.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 10:40 (nineteen years ago)

How about "Wild Thing" by Tone Loc and "Wild Thing" by Sam Kinison - I seem to remember overlap there.

EZ Snappin (EZSnappin), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 10:47 (nineteen years ago)

not quite the same but Poison's "Unskinny Bop" sat next to Bel Biv Devoe's "Poison" some time in the early nineties.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 10:49 (nineteen years ago)

... and "Poison" by Alice Cooper as well perhaps?

Oh No It's Dadaismus! (Dada), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 11:04 (nineteen years ago)

The Prodigy's 'Poison' must've been around then as well.

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 11:05 (nineteen years ago)

Cheap Trick's cover of "Don't Be Cruel" and Bobby Brown's original "Don't Be Cruel" were on the charts at the same time in 1988.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 12:22 (nineteen years ago)

how exact does this need to be

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 12:30 (nineteen years ago)

how exact does this need to be

I would say they should at least have been in either the US or the UK Top 40 at the same time.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 12:51 (nineteen years ago)

"Creep"

Radiohead (1993)
TLC (1994)

Yes, a good year between the two album release dates but definitely remember hearing both on the air around the same time.

Mt Moriah (mtmoriah), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

Stone Temple Pilots 'Creep' in '93 too.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 14:32 (nineteen years ago)

The Prodigy's 'Poison' must've been around then as well.

u funny

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 14:33 (nineteen years ago)

"Some Guys have all the luck"

The Robert Palmer, and the one by some girl that eventually but quite quickly was covered by Rod Stewart.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 14:35 (nineteen years ago)

To the extent that Alphaville's 1984 "Forever Young" is still ragingly popular in Germany, it's crossed paths with Rod Stewart's 1988 song, and... there's gotta be a few more...

Mt Moriah (mtmoriah), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

Feel Like Making Love

Roberta Flack and Bad Company.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

"Whoomp! There It Is" - Tag Team
"Whoot, There It Is" - 95 South

Basically at the exact same time.

matt2 (matt2), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

Usher and Ja Rule both had singles called "Caught Up" out early last year.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

A couple of these might not have shared chart time, but they were close:

The Innocents / Carla Thomas, "Gee Whiz" (1961)
Stevie Nicks / Nu Shooz, "I Can't Wait"
Murray Head / The Carpenters, "Superstar" (1971)
Blondie / Cliff Richard, "Dreaming" (1980)
Bad Co. / Barry White, "Can't Get Enough" (1974)
Van Halen / The Pointer Sisters, "Jump" (1984)
Roy Orbison / New Kids on the Block, "You Got it" (1989)
The Velvets / Ferrante and Teicher, "Tonight" (1961)
The Monkees /The Bee Gees, "Words" (1967)
Rufus / Jackson Browne, "Stay" (1978)
The Bee Gees / Metallica, "One" (1989)
Kenny Rogers / The Whispers, "Lady" (1980)
The Cure / Tesla, "Love Song" (1989)
Rod Stewart / Aretha Franklin, "Angel" (1973)
Allman Brothers Band / Poco, "Crazy Love" (1979)
Ian Gomm / Triumph, "Hold On" (1979)
The Pointer Sisters / Ace, "How Long" (1975)

Dan Heilman (The Deacon), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

Flack and Bad Company were a year apart, but Bad Co. is worth mentioning because their first three hits shared title names with current or recent hits by others: "Can't Get Enough" (Barry White), "Movin' On" (Merle Haggard), and "Feel Like Makin' Love."

They kept the trend going in 1979 when they had a hit with "Rock'n'Roll Fantasy" a year after The Kinks charted with a different song of the same name.

Dan Heilman (The Deacon), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

That's proper, if rather pointless, scholarship

Oh No It's Dadaismus! (Dada), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

Blur had Fade Away on The Great Escape, Oasis also released a song called Fade Away on the War Child compilation - with Johnny Depp as guest guitarist? Silly, indulgent Britpop years...

his sister pam (hissisterpam), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

Words and Jump = 4 great songs!

jim wentworth (wench), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

"Angel Eyes" by Abba and Roxy Music were in the UK top 40 at the same time.

everything (everything), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

"The Real Thing" by 2 Unlimited and "The Real Thing" by Tony Di Bart were simultaneously in the UK top 10.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

I think "Hold On" by En Vogue and Wilson Phillips were around the same time.

dr. phil (josh langhoff), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 00:42 (nineteen years ago)

"Point of No Return" by both Exposé and Nu Shooz. Haven't heard either in years, so I forget which one is by which!

Bjorn Deleuze (Ocelot Wildly), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 01:08 (nineteen years ago)

"The Mercy Seat" by Nick Cave and Ultra Vivid Scene, both in 1988 if memory serves. I'd imagine that Cave's is more canonical, but I much prefer the UVS song.

Bill A (Bill A), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 06:45 (nineteen years ago)

Did Nu Shooz have any song titles that were theirs and theirs alone?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 07:29 (nineteen years ago)

Verve and Oasis both had songs called ..
