The only one I can think of MC Solaar (which I'm probably spelling wrong).

The only thing you need to know, for now, is that Big Dada will release TTC's debut album Ceci n'est pas un Disque on April 22.

I loathe SSC personally - very low energy and uninspiring.

Best french hip hop I heard in a while is a song called "Les Petits Chefs" by PM, but I know nothing about it.

French hip hop is GREAT. I have to find more myself, if I only could afford to buy music lately..
Disiz la Peste I quite like, album = "la poisson rouge." I've got a compilation called "L'hexagone 2001: rien n'a change" which is TOPS, I recommend it. Trouble w/radio in France, they never announced the names of the artists! Maybe there is a website for Skyrock, the big hip hop station in Paris? I haven't searched a lot myself, but you might try that, or searching through www.voila.fr or www.wanadoo.fr home pages.

I must mention Supreme NTM (N.T.M. = nique ta meme = fuck your mum). The song "Nique le Police", mixed by Cut Killer, features in the French movie 'Hate'. It is a gloriously big dumb gangsta party song that samples Edith Piaf, and whenever it is played at a party my friends and I suddenly turn into dancing gangsta idiots. Also "Ma Benz" has a magnificent ragga vocal, and the immortal shout "YO RUDOOOIS!!!" at the start.

>There's a lot of cool instrumental hip hop stuff coming out of France too.Check DJ Cam,Tommy Hools,The Mighty Bop,La Funk Mob,some of the old Kid Loco... >Ultra Records in the US released a compilation of tracks called Le Flow, which is recent indie hip hop...then there's MC Solaar & Soon E MC.

There's a fair-sized article on French hip hop in the new issue of Careless Talk (www.carelesstalkcostslives.com)... just out.

Some of the links and recommendations mentioned are as follows:

Meufia: Mlf, Nouvel R five-track single (Les sons d’la Rue, 2000, www.sondlarue.com) La Caution: Asphalte hurlante CD (Kerozen, 2001, www.la-caution.com) La Rumeur: new album to be released start of 2002 THC Crew: Lost Bastard Album 12-track CD (www.astrobastard.com, 2002) TTC: Elementaire EP (Big Dada, 2001) TTC: Leguman/Subway EP (Big Dada, 2001)

Jerry, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In the near future I plan to buy a handful of the recent rap français best sellers in one go - and maybe a few of Jerry's recommendations too - and see if I can make any sense of 'em. I'll report back when I've done this. Meanwhile, another vote from me for Saïan Supa Crew. I thought their recent LP was one of the best of 2001, altho' it doesn't take off until about three or four songs in.

Jeff W, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Whoever mentioned Cut Killer, he's got a load of mixed discs out. Thanks for the other recommends, anyone else know of good overviews of the hip hop francais? As in what are the real classic cuts etc.? Time to brush up on my verlan..

I would tell u to get Ntm (incredible in live, international class) (ntm=mfs) Saian supa crew ,a group with an energic flow ,113 for their good funky sound and cut killer ,the most important french hip hop dj who makes great selections and rmx's.As somebody wrote before there's a lot of good instrumental dj's travelling around the world in the biggest parties.Generally, french rap is a little bit more funky than us rap and the lyrics got the soft of the french language. BUT PLEASE don't speak anymore about Mc solaar,he's down since 10 years and doesn't represent.US rap is still the first inspiration but i think u'll find a little "je ne sais quoi" that will open ur mind. An hip hop french listener. Big Hits:NTM's last album;live 1998-2000 Saian supa crew:X-raisons 113 Cut Killer Diam's Try to get a link for the french hip hop radio Skyrock which makes good sound systems at the evening. It's a good base for a discovering, now ciao!

matthieu, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

saian supa crew low energy?!? a)listen to 'darkness' b) they are hyperactive and mental from all accounts i've heard

minna, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

La Caution are the most awesome french hip hop act out there, with TTC not far behind. The new TTC album is top, it features dose-one and the guys from la caution (there combined name is l'armee des douzes). James Delleck is pretty dope too. I reckon the french are gonna take over...

Graham C, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just got the TTC album, but not heard yet (it's in my large pile of Amsterdam purchases). Looking forward to it.

Saïan Super Crew!!! I just got a minidisc of whatever has "Darkness" on it - these guys are really really f'in good! - e.g. they sound "now" in a way I've never heard any other European rap do - they can do bounce and R&B and I can hear a little ol' dirty in there but none of it sounds like tacked on, faded poster from last year shit, these guys need a fuckin street team because they rule

Tracer, is Emma a fan?

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 24 November 2003 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

She is, as yet, unaware of its existence, mwahahahaha!! I'm told there is some heavy Marseilles slang going on so even she may need a lyric sheet. DAMMIT I wish I knew French. The only things i can really make out are refs to "the breaks," "ring my bell," some De La Soul, the aforementioned Darkness song ("c'est le darkness / blabla le madness") random "check it out" yelps etc. And a song that ahem recites the alphabet.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 24 November 2003 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

"c'est le darkness / blabla le madness" is gonna be my catch-phrase from now on

geeta (geeta), Monday, 24 November 2003 05:02 (twenty-two years ago)

IAM have a new single with Method Man & Redman called "Noble Art"! I don't like it, but then again, I don't like french hip hop either. actually, it's funny - i don't care THAT much about lyrics of american hip hop (what with american not being my mother language), but i just can't bring myself to listen to any rap in a language that i don't understand (ie rap that isn't american or croatian/serbian/bosnian). anyone else have this problem?

(of course, another minus is that most international rap tends to be annoyingly over-reverent to the golden age of old-school or whatever, and i like my beats digital and clubby and irreverent)

Mind Taker, Monday, 24 November 2003 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

You shoudl give Saïan a chance then Mind Taker, they are exactly those things - they do drop references to old-school stuff but even THAT is done totally irreverently. last time i heard a real crew interrupting each other, affirming each other, busting into giggles at the end of like half the songs, was.... well i'm not sure when it was! what really kills me about them is how their voices and styles contrast (you can tell they've heard their Busta, their Eminem (one songs explicitly refs "my name is"), the best analogy i can come up w/is that it's similar to the way switching back between video and film in the same movie can create a friction

I think the root of my affection though is the sheer fun they seem to be having on the strength of their dexterity, in the midst of their verbal overload; it's like they can't quite believe it themselves. They're probably so surprised because they read all the same subtly chauvinistic shit I'VE read about how "language [x] just isn't suited for hip hop" - god talk about a lack of imagination!! Yeah, and English isn't suited to rhyming "j'ai besoin" with "au moin" either

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 24 November 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Saian Supa Crew are quite good live. "La preuve par 3" has great lyrics about racism, "Raz de marée" has a good beat, reggae-ish "Que dis-t'on"'s ok too.
The second album was quite disapointing though.

You may like some of these recent tracks :

L'armée des 12 "Gin et jus"
Klub des Loosers "Baise les gens"
L'atelier "Le hip hop c'est mon pote"
DSL "Sexual"
Mc JeanGab'1 "J't'emmerde"
James Delleck "C'est In"
Donkishot "Restauration rapide"
Bouga "Belsunce Breakdown"

Does anyone remember Yannick??? "Ce Soiree La" was like the French Will Smith or something.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

That song is played in EVERY french disco I've ever been to.

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

That's because it's like the best song of all time. People go nuts for it.

any updates on the stuff? i just picked up Booba's Temps Mort in Paris and it's solid, none too groundbreaking but throwing some pretty fresh technoid low-end and rainy orchestral drama (also used in the backpacker stuff, to great effect) into the Timbaland/etc club sound. the production quality is somewhere in between that and grime though. the guy in the record store said he's number one in France right now. he reminds me of 50, same dead-end snares and sullen flow.

What do people know/what do you think about DJ Dee Nasty?

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Friday, 16 September 2005 01:35 (twenty years ago)

& the reason that I ask (I wasn't going to say) is that he turns up on this Miguel "Anga" Diaz CD. I guess this is what old school French DJs do: they go to Cuba and appear on experimental Cuban releases.
