It's good.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

It sounds like a demo though.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

how do you think this new m.i.a. single is gonna be?

benrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 20:58 (nineteen years ago)

Where did you hear it? I can't find it anywhere.

chap who would dare to contain two ingredients. Tea and bags. (chap), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 21:16 (nineteen years ago)

yeah i was gonna mention this on that thread, but i don't think it's a single. i like the new robot-voice m.i.a.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

i got it off pitchfork.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

*whistles idly*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 21:27 (nineteen years ago)

It is good. Could use some more bass, though.

chap who would dare to contain two ingredients. Tea and bags. (chap), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

96kbps!

struttin' with some barbecue (jimnaseum), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

There could be a truckload of bass on it and you'd never be able to tell.

struttin' with some barbecue (jimnaseum), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

I smell POTENTIAL NUMBER ONE SINGLE.

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

S'pretty long. Sounds pretty flat too, but that might be the 96kps thing. I could see it sounding good under the right circumstance though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

She sounds burnt out or something... like Sly Stone on Riot. Maybe she is using heroin?

Rat Nasty (ratnasty), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

I like it! It's a bit forgettable tune-wise but I like her voice SO MUCH better even if it's a whisper here, it sounds more like her as a real person (real London accent ppl), and not the incredibly grating/faux-tasting persona she created on the last record, even if I find the lyrics a bit... M.I.A. was out raving way underage? O RLY? Maybe she was, it just seems a bit odd bringing it up this late. I would have thought that kind of formative experience would have left a more audible mark on her music somehow?

It's on Diplo's myspace btw.

when I learn to drive I'm getting a Ford Fiesta too. Pepperpot Trims = Pimpin! (, Wednesday, 11 October 2006 22:11 (nineteen years ago)

i like this, it's fun.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 12 October 2006 04:01 (nineteen years ago)

(also, her visa problems get a mention in this week's new yorker.)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 12 October 2006 04:15 (nineteen years ago)

this reminds me vaguely of "Adrenalin"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 12 October 2006 04:18 (nineteen years ago)

could this mark an early 90s revival (if it's already begun, i hadn't noticed)? fifteen years on i guess it's time for the early adopters.

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Thursday, 12 October 2006 04:30 (nineteen years ago)

not that this really brings up any 1992 memories for me, sonically anyways

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Thursday, 12 October 2006 04:31 (nineteen years ago)

but i was pretty tiny then.

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Thursday, 12 October 2006 04:32 (nineteen years ago)

oh i forgot about miami bass, that's it. shit was everywhere at school sports things.

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Thursday, 12 October 2006 04:33 (nineteen years ago)

kinda dull. sounds like a b-side or bonus track.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Thursday, 12 October 2006 04:34 (nineteen years ago)

BORING

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 12 October 2006 04:38 (nineteen years ago)

miami bass by way of her brazil funk fixation, yeah (and/or diplo's brazil fixation). but lots of lil jon/atl in there too, sounds to me.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 12 October 2006 04:38 (nineteen years ago)

i.e. baile crunk.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 12 October 2006 04:39 (nineteen years ago)

The main problem is that her vocals do nothing for the song.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 12 October 2006 04:43 (nineteen years ago)

miami bass is by way of brazil

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Thursday, 12 October 2006 04:45 (nineteen years ago)

that's what in hollertronix' secret sauce

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Thursday, 12 October 2006 04:45 (nineteen years ago)

i thought miami bass was by way of miami.

anyway, i like this song.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 12 October 2006 04:54 (nineteen years ago)

Miami Trunk.

EZ Snappin (EZSnappin), Thursday, 12 October 2006 09:56 (nineteen years ago)

MIA as Miss Kittin? The hell?

nate p. (natepatrin), Thursday, 12 October 2006 13:08 (nineteen years ago)

It's not that good.

eh (fandango), Thursday, 12 October 2006 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

MIA as Miss Kittin? The hell?

i think she's going more for a snoop/pharrell vibe, that whole laid-back murmur. which i think works well against the urgency of the beat. and i like the urgency of the beat, it's more jacked-up than a lot of arular. but still with that severely clipped gunshot snare, which deliberately limits the swing (and is her primary connection to similarly swing-limited postpunk).

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 12 October 2006 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

Short clip of another new song, "Talk About Moi:"

http://myweb.saudi.net.sa/moho/music/talk_about_moi.mp3

Seems to sample New Order. It's pretty sick.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 12 October 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

ILM has a terrible track record: M.I.A. didn't break out, neither did Lady Sov. What new artist has ILM gotten all spermy over who actually amounted to something, commerically speaking?

shookout (shookout), Thursday, 12 October 2006 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

why does it matter that they didn't 'break out'? ilm has gone nuts over some pretty commercially successful artists as well as ones which sold about 10 copies. with certain artists in the latter category - joanna newsom, say, or the scott walker album - this question never comes up. with MIA...it does.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 12 October 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

The Lex... OTM?!

nate p. (natepatrin), Thursday, 12 October 2006 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

Dude ILM is so getting fired from its A&R jobs. We suck.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 12 October 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

We'll all just have to work at Tower in the interim.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 October 2006 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

The Lex... OTM.

this is my shocked face.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Thursday, 12 October 2006 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

Hahaha okay guys, it's not like Lex is an incontinent puppy who suddenly started singing the Queen of the Night aria or something.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Thursday, 12 October 2006 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

haha I do love the assumption that if people on a message board like something it must SELL A ZILLION COPIES OR IT'S NO GOOD DAMN IT

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 12 October 2006 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

i think the jury's still out on lady sovereign's stateside success, too

geoff (gcannon), Thursday, 12 October 2006 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

1) myspace, right, people talk about it lots, but it doesn't actually work, does it? it doesn't play the songs you want it to 50% of the time
2) eventually it did. this new MIA song is shit. why is she trying to sound like justine frischmann?
3) who are hoosteen and nate patrin and why are they acting like they know me?

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 12 October 2006 20:21 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe she actually sounds like Justine Frischmann??

eh (fandango), Thursday, 12 October 2006 20:37 (nineteen years ago)

nate patrin's been around for a while? (longer than you or i maybe!) Hoosteen is, I think, quite new.

I really like this song! the talking-quiet-over-big-fanfare-siren-noises idea is quite nifty, i don't really know what it's trying to do but it's kind of confusing for the ear in an interesting way. also she totally sez "i heart you" in the middle.

I still kind of think that bands who are "big on myspace" only get actual measurable record-sales success cos of the attention they received in more mainstream media due to being "big on myspace".

ampersand, hearts, semicolon (cis), Thursday, 12 October 2006 20:51 (nineteen years ago)

Top 10 most played songs on Myspace:

1 Cassie Me and U
2 Panic! At The Disco The Only Difference
3 The Fray Over My Head Cable Car
4 Rihanna Unfaithful
5 Danity Kane Show Stopper
6 T.i. Why You Wanna
7 Hinder Lips of an Angel
8 Justin Timberlake SexyBack
9 Yung Joc I Know You See It
10 A.f.i. Miss Murder

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 12 October 2006 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

the "big on myspace" thing is the biggest reddest herring ever, you may as well say "big on the radio" for all the interest in that hook.

i think i actually dislike the beat more than the vocal on the song, it's a bit too recycled-'bucky done gun'. haha actually it reminds me of 'bossy'! in that when i first heard it, i was like "oh nice, kelis is finding ways to occupy herself before she makes a proper song again" quickly replaced by "wtf that's the LEAD SINGLE?" (and now "I LOVE IT".)

i've never heard of patrin or hoosteen but i consider them rude, frankly, and they can fuck off with their music snob condescension.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 12 October 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

also i have no idea as ever wtf dom's point is but to clarify i meant that myspace doesn't work as in WHEN YOU CLICK THE SONGS THEY DON'T PLAY because the technology is shit. not that it doesn't work in 'breaking' a band, i couldn't care less about that.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 12 October 2006 21:00 (nineteen years ago)

Lex, that's not shit technology, that's forcing you to reload and watch the banner ads again. The "Myspace doesn't work" meme is false, it works perfectly because all the faults are designed to make you watch more ads.

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 12 October 2006 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

Dom Passantino, tell me about "The Fray"! are they the young people's nu-emo music?

ampersand, hearts, semicolon (cis), Thursday, 12 October 2006 21:02 (nineteen years ago)

haha i couldn't tell you what any of the ads on myspace are for though so it hasn't worked!

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 12 October 2006 21:04 (nineteen years ago)

also: reloading the page, should have tried that first time round, oh well

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 12 October 2006 21:04 (nineteen years ago)

Cis: The Fray are more like an American attempt to do nu-UK invasion piano ballady stuff, all totally mediocre except they have one absolutely fucking amazing song that I will not hesitate in calling "The new "74/75"", if you're searching for a quote. It's called "Over My Head (Cable Car)", and it's AOR-tastic. Search it out. That album's not too hot though.

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 12 October 2006 21:07 (nineteen years ago)

there are ads on myspace?

eh (fandango), Thursday, 12 October 2006 21:09 (nineteen years ago)

i've never heard of patrin or hoosteen but i consider them rude, frankly

http://www.fallingtree.co.uk/assets/specials.jpg

and they can fuck off with their music snob condescension

Widespread hatred of entire genres based on primary musical instruments in not-snobbishness shocker!

nate p. (natepatrin), Thursday, 12 October 2006 23:50 (nineteen years ago)

this bullshit song is gonna ruin searching for mp3s by mia x

and what (ooo), Friday, 13 October 2006 02:56 (nineteen years ago)

"Ciara ft. MIA - Goodies (Richard X Remix)" already has

nate p. (natepatrin), Friday, 13 October 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

lex OTM re MIA sounding like her pal Justine

not thinkin much of this. her voice is better when her accent is broad, brash and exaggerated. just murmuring ain't gonna cut it.

;_; (blueski), Friday, 13 October 2006 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

'talk about moi' could be awesome with a bit more work tho

;_; (blueski), Friday, 13 October 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)
