why aren't the u.k. ilmers all over that 120 days album? it's horrible and it sounds like primal scream!

I'd like to be on drunk island.

struttin' with some barbecue (jimnaseum), Saturday, 14 October 2006 01:20 (nineteen years ago)

scott, i am the only person on ILM in the UK that probably has heard of them.

the album is NOT being released in the UK until 2007

I have them referenced as more early 80s Simple Minds than Primal Scream !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 14 October 2006 01:22 (nineteen years ago)

a blogger trying to describe the hybrid electronic rock sound of 120 days

http://spacebluesmusic.blogspot.com/2006/10/120-days.html

"The way I try to describe this band to my friends is basically this: Kraftwerk, Can, Neu!, Suicide, Primal Scream, Kasabian, Spacemen 3, Spiritualized, Slowdive and Cocteau Twins, all mixing in a bowl of Norwegian pop goodness. Eat it up."

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 14 October 2006 01:25 (nineteen years ago)

errrr, they wish they sounded like simple minds. kasabian fans will love them!

wait, does the album get better after 3 or 4 songs, cuz that's as far as i got.

they are on the very sexy vice label here.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 14 October 2006 01:28 (nineteen years ago)

they really sound like the black angels.

jodawo (jodawo), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 03:22 (nineteen years ago)

how are the black angels? the record cover has been trying to seduce me at everyday music here in PDX. but i have to say i've been, like, waaaaaay underwhelmed by the 120 days stuff i've heard so far. so you use syntheseizers: good for you!

oh, and the lil fader writeup is D-U-M dumb, which pains me to say because i try to like the fader. "Do you plan on ever using digital synthesizers, or do you prefer the analog sound?" given the state of indie schtick, that's a loaded question, made no less meaningless by its loadedness. first of all, i want to see a list of 120 days' gear to ensure that they're really using PROPAH analog gear, and not some analog modeling shit (like i use). secondly, i want to know why the fader doesn't (IIRC) ask questions like that to, like, lil' jon or the yin yang twinz. why do white folx have to try harder to be authentic?

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 05:22 (nineteen years ago)

black angels at their best sound like love battery but only for a minute. worth hearing but not worth buying

jergins (jergins), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 06:55 (nineteen years ago)

Not much of an interest for those dozens of Norwegian RAWK bands that have appeared on the scene lately. Analogue synths are superior to digital ones though, and that's a fact. :)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 09:53 (nineteen years ago)

the way most of these rock bands use their keyboards, it hardly matters though... (anyway, analog's alleged superiority over digital would depend upon what you wanted to get out of your sounds... i find it interesting that the "debate" is opening up to embrace digital synthesis - like FM synthesis - after a long period of it being deemed inauthentic.)

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

"Analogue synths are superior to digital ones though, and that's a fact"

Geir is Count Grishnackh and i demand my five kroner

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

120 Days are pleasant enough but yeah, if they think ppl are gonna mistake "derivative" for "postmodern" they've probably got another thing comin'

dann dann duh-dann

they got another thing comin'

dann duh-dannnnn

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

scott I know you can sing this shit with me

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

in this world we're livin' in i've had my share of sorrow...which is why i must pass on the 120 days album and aim for a new tomorrow.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

i was just thinking of yoo, thomas, cuz i decided to take off the troo black metal i got in the mail and put on the new dan bejar thing. it hasn't cured my lumbago yet though.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

I got that Bejar but haven't gotten to it yet. What's lumbago? I sure did fuck up my neck yesterday looking at the computer too much. Listening to Deneva again - I loved Hawkwind then & I can dig their trebly grandkids now!

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

i think lumbago is lower back pain. which i always have a little of. thanks to hoisting kids and hospital laundry all the time.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 02:32 (nineteen years ago)

scott, i am the only person on ILM in the UK that probably has heard of them.

Wrong!

the album is NOT being released in the UK until 2007

Rough Trade have got it in stock.

It's OK if you like that sort of sub-"I Travel" thing.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 19 October 2006 11:31 (nineteen years ago)

They've got to suck. They're far too attractive to actually be any good.

Blah Blah Blah (kate), Thursday, 19 October 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

Man, I *never* want to Image Google "120 Days" again. Argh, mine eyes.

Blah Blah Blah (kate), Thursday, 19 October 2006 12:13 (nineteen years ago)

I got sent the album. I must admit I wouldn't have voluntarily bought it.

Don't know what 1973 Eno's doing in the band though (second right).

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 19 October 2006 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 19 October 2006 12:22 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, what a shame, I can't listen to the music. I'll just have to look at the pictures.

Blah Blah Blah (kate), Thursday, 19 October 2006 12:23 (nineteen years ago)

...while listening to the Early Years. Who do actually sound like Neu!, Spacemen 3, Slowdive etc.

Blah Blah Blah (kate), Thursday, 19 October 2006 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

I think the New Gold Dream vs 120 Days battle is, in Dissensus terms, a flipping (sic) no-brainer...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 19 October 2006 12:26 (nineteen years ago)

would this mix tape seduce kate?

from 120 days myspace profile

As heard on the 120 Days mixtape:

cluster - imsüden
neu! - für immer
silver apples - oscillations
spacemen 3 - suicide (live)
tussle - tight jeans
suicide - fast money music
bob hund - allseende ögat
david bowie - a new career in a new town
mental overdrive - new world
primal scream - detroit
jesus & mary chain - reverberation (13th floor elevators cover)
kraftwerk - metropolis
steve reich - music for 18 musicians
spectrum - how you satisfy me

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 19 October 2006 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

Sure, that mixtape would seduce me. Especially if played for me by hottt Norwegian boys in eyeliner.

But that doesn't mean I'm going to like their music. See also, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Morning After Girls, etc.

Blah Blah Blah (kate), Thursday, 19 October 2006 12:29 (nineteen years ago)

Is this the new Sareena Maneesh?

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Thursday, 19 October 2006 12:35 (nineteen years ago)

Must be a long mixtape if they can get all of Music For 18 Musicians on there!

They are no Annie From Norway either.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 19 October 2006 13:13 (nineteen years ago)

hmmm, i wonder if ulver ARE my fave norwegian band. could be. i do love them so. i'd have to think about it.

martian, did you hear the last solefald album? so great.

http://www.decibelmagazine.com/reviews/mar2006/solefald.aspx

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 19 October 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

yes, however The Linear Scaffold remains my favourite

when this album came out it was a blast of originality, probably one of the defining 90s rock albums in terms of fresh ideas

epic electronic progressive rock soundscapes - why isn 't ulver played on bbc 6 music?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

Because Rob Brydon's never heard of them.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 20 October 2006 08:06 (nineteen years ago)

wrong bloke, this is the one to blame for the mess at 6 Music

Ric Blaxill, Head of Programmes, BBC 6 Music.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 20 October 2006 08:09 (nineteen years ago)

What you forget is that BBC 6Music's policy is to play music by people whom Rob Brydon has heard of.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 20 October 2006 08:10 (nineteen years ago)

three years pass...

Jeez this album is so good. "I've Lost My Vision" = perfect electro-motorik update for the 20th century. And "Come Out, Come Down"---OH! Perfection.

You know, I could use this. It's very beautiful. And I love the color (Stevie D), Tuesday, 23 February 2010 20:21 (sixteen years ago)
