OK, I suppose this is easier than one certain thread that floats around here

My call:

Genesis: Selling England By The Pound: "After The Ordeal"
XTC: Skylarking: "1000 Umbrellas"
Depeche Mode: Construction Time Again: "Pipeline"
Genesis: Foxtrot: "Horizons"
Beach Boys: Pet Sounds: "Pet Sounds"
Depeche Mode: Black Celebration: "A Question Of Time"
Zombies: Odessey & Oracle: "Butcher's Tale"
Aztec Camera: High Land Hard Rain: "Lost Outside The Tunnel"
Crowded House: Temple Of Low Men: "Mansion In The Slums"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 22:05 (nineteen years ago)

I like 1000 Umbrellas. If there's a bad song on Skylarking its Mermaid Smiled, which was replaced with Dear God anyway (making the album perfect)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 22:06 (nineteen years ago)

(agreed abt the Zombies tho - I hate that song)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 22:06 (nineteen years ago)

X-Post
Was one of the hardest albums to pick a least favourite track from. Not at least because my main reason for liking the album so much is that I consider every track (including "1000 Umbrellas") close to perfect.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 22:07 (nineteen years ago)

Todd Rundgren - Something/Anything ("Viking Song")
Alice Cooper - Welcome To My Nightmare ("Years Ago")
The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society ("All Of My Friends Were There")
Laura Nyro - New York Tendaberry ("The Man Who Sends Me Home")
Blue Oyster Cult - Agents Of Fortune ("This Ain't The Summer Of Love")
Plush - Fed ("Unis")
Simon Warner - Waiting Rooms ("Kitchen Tango")
Prefab Sprout - Steve McQueen ("Moving The River")

how DARE you make me sell out my favorite records!

hank (hank s), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

Rolling Stones - Casino Boogie (Exile on Main Street)
The Clash - Lovers Rock (London Calling)
Pavement - Fame Throwa (Slanted & Enchanted)
Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum - Bob Dylan (Love & Theft)
Jenny - Sleater-Kinney (Dig Me Out)

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 22:45 (nineteen years ago)

Interesting choices, Hongro. I always thought that
"A Butcher's Tale" was one of the Zombies crowning
achievements, perhaps the emotional heart of the album.
I feel the same way about "After The Ordeal."

I can't find anything to like about Pink Floyd's
"San Tropez." What was Roger thinking?

The Beatles "Don't Pass Me By" immediately comes
to mind. Poor Ringo. Imagine the pressure you'd feel,
writing songs and trying to compete with John Lennon?

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 23:05 (nineteen years ago)

Pavement - Fame Throwa (Slanted & Enchanted)

That's one of my favorite songs on S&E. I could do without "Our Singer" however.

bergholt (bergholt), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 06:34 (nineteen years ago)

Interesting choices, Hongro. I always thought that
"A Butcher's Tale" was one of the Zombies crowning
achievements, perhaps the emotional heart of the album.
I feel the same way about "After The Ordeal."

But then, those are among my 10 favourite albums of all time. Virtually everything on those albums is at least close to perfect. Those are not at all bad tracks, but also not quite up there with the best ("After The Ordeal" is obviously not even close to the greatness of "Firth Of Fifth" or "Dancing With The Moonlight Night" - both in my Top 10 best tracks of all time).

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 09:47 (nineteen years ago)

Devo: Are We Not Men... : "Sloppy (I Saw My Baby Gettin')"
Smiths: The Queen Is Dead: "The Boy With A Thorn In His Side"

zeus (zeus), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 10:13 (nineteen years ago)

Todd Rundgren - Something/Anything ("Viking Song")
The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society ("All Of My Friends Were There")
Rolling Stones - All Down the Line (Exile on Main Street)
Byrds - Dolphin's Smile (Notorious Byrd Brothers)
Pink Floyd - "Chapter 24" (The Piper at the Gates of Dawn)
Kinks: Arthur: "Young and Innocent Days"

You're all crazy!

Diddumsismus (Dada), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 10:17 (nineteen years ago)

OK Dada, let's see yours!

zeus (zeus), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 10:19 (nineteen years ago)

John Cale - Paris 1919 ("Graham Greene")

... that's one

Diddumsismus (Dada), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 10:21 (nineteen years ago)

John Cale - Music For a New Society ("Changes Made")

... there's another and...

Parlaiment - The Mothership Connection ("Handcuffs"

Diddumsismus (Dada), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 10:23 (nineteen years ago)

mansun - 'anti everything' off 'six'. it's still a superb song, mind, just like most of the songs listed so far.

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 10:30 (nineteen years ago)

Well, 'Graham Greene' is a good song.

zeus (zeus), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 10:45 (nineteen years ago)

It's still the worst thing on the album tho

Diddumsismus (Dada), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 10:47 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't heard this album for ages, but the only song I can't remember anything of is 'Hanky Panky Nohow', so it gets my vote.

zeus (zeus), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 10:54 (nineteen years ago)

What, you can't remember "The cows that agriculture won't allow"?!?!?!

Diddumsismus (Dada), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

Well, sincerely not.

zeus (zeus), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 11:10 (nineteen years ago)

That's one of the best songs on the album!

Diddumsismus (Dada), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

'guilty partner' off technique. it really spoils the party.

oh and :
Smiths: The Queen Is Dead: "The Boy With A Thorn In His Side"

????? are. you. mad??

that's unbelievable, my favourite smiths song ever right there.

pisces (piscesx), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

Everything that isn't "Fine Time" off Technique.

James Herbert Dip (noodle vague), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 11:52 (nineteen years ago)

"Andulucia" is a great song, but it is not as good as "Graham Greene"...

hank (hank s), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 12:01 (nineteen years ago)

I give up

Diddumsismus (Dada), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 12:06 (nineteen years ago)

"Fine Time" is easily the worst on that album and "Guilty Partner's" one of the best, fools.

Baaderonixx in the year of the locusts (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

"My Heart and the Real World," Double Nickels

There must be 40 songs on Double Nickels worse than that.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 12:46 (nineteen years ago)

This has turned into a thread on people who like good albums but like all the wrong tracks on them

Diddumsismus (Dada), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

i don't see v many good albums on this thread!

aaliyah - u got nerve (aaliyah)
pj harvey - send his love to me (to bring you my love)
trina - do you want me? (diamond princess)
the knife - na na na (silent shout)
tori amos - she's your cocaine (from the choirgirl hotel)
björk - all neon like (homogenic)
girls aloud - real life (what will the neighbours say?)
tom waits - walking spanish (rain dogs)
rachel stevens - all about me (come and get it)
madonna - why's it so hard? (erotica)
kate bush - houdini (the dreaming)

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

The Clash - Lovers Rock (London Calling)
-agreed

drug girls off of "simpatico" - velocity girl
time after time off of "reckoning" - r.e.m. (even though it fits better listening to it on record)
and uh...... anarchy in the u.k. (anarchy in bedrock) cover off of "cereal killer soundtrack" -green jello or jelly

christopherscottknudsen (christopherscottknudsen), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

Funkadelic, "America Eats Its Young" (title cut) - Their third consecutive sonically-fucked, murky nigh-instrumental title cut, and to my ears, the weakest of the three.

Captain Beefheart, "Flash Gordon's Ape" (Lick My Decals Off, Baby) - This is actually a pretty great song, but it's hard to tell, given the idiotic production/mixing job (800 overdubbed skronking saxes rendering rest of band inaudible.

Love, "Revelations" (Da Capo) - Obviously. (Tho it's a little better than it gets credit for.)

M. Agony Von Bontee (M. Agony Von Bontee), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

björk - all neon like (homogenic)

you'd choose this over 5 Years/Immature/Alarm Call?? feh.

fade into goo (fandango), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

Blur - Ernold Same

The Great Escape.

It's not post-modern and experimental and exciting, it's just a bit shit.

Kinky Fantastic (Kinky Fantastic), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

actually, dadaismus otm. forget I mentioned it.

fade into goo (fandango), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

i would never ever even consider 'immature' for worst song, it's gorgeous. '5 years' has the amazing moment when the strings break through, 'alarm call' is bizarre pop fun. i do love 'all neon like' but slightly less than the others.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

worst is relative yeah, I still think it's superior to the others mind you (which I don't dislike, they just have minor flaws...)

fade into goo (fandango), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

I LOVE When You're Near Me...

Call me strange, but I never took to 'Perfect Circle' much.

Mippy (Mippy), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

There's A Riot Goin' On ("Spaced Cowboy")
Sister Lovers ("Kizza Me")
Gilded Palace Of Sin ("My Uncle")

now I know how Sophie felt...

hank (hank s), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

"Kooks" and "Andy Warhol" on that Bowie's "Hunky Dory."

"Train Comin' 'Round the Bend" on the Velvet Underground's "Loaded."

shookout (shookout), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

"Save the Life of My Child" off Simon & Garfunkel's "Bookends."

shookout (shookout), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

Depeche Mode: Construction Time Again: "Pipeline"

D:

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 18 October 2006 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

baaderonix i don't think it's quite fair to call cassie out for an INTERLUDE!

Girls Aloud: Whole Lotta History (Chemistry)

this is the best song on the album! 'long hot summer' or 'biology' is the worst.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 19 October 2006 07:33 (nineteen years ago)

Of course you're wrong, 'Biology' is the best, the ballads are shite unfortunately.

zeus (zeus), Thursday, 19 October 2006 07:50 (nineteen years ago)

either/or: punch and judy
velvet underground and nico: femme fatale
loveless: sometimes (extremely tough choice as i love this song)
the shape of punk to come: the refused party program
blonde on blonde: temporary like achilles
perfect from now on: made-up dreams
ok computer: fitter happier (ok, obvious choice...not that i dislike it or anything)
beggar's banquet: dear doctor
still life: face of melinda
pink moon: know

not necessarily my definitive top 10 mind you, but definitely all would be present in a top 30

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 19 October 2006 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

**The Clash - Lovers Rock (London Calling)**

NOOOOOO! Koka-Kola is the answer.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 19 October 2006 11:30 (nineteen years ago)

my vote goes to the card cheat. not a bad song, though

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 19 October 2006 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

'Racey Lacey' is worst song on Chemistry by billion miles

;_; (blueski), Thursday, 19 October 2006 11:46 (nineteen years ago)

charlie howard are those really your favourite albums or did you c/p from a q "greatest albums ever" list?

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 19 October 2006 11:48 (nineteen years ago)

**The Clash - Lovers Rock (London Calling)**

NOOOOOO! Koka-Kola is the answer.

The correct answer is of course 'Jimmy Jazz', but there's some stiff competition.

ONIMO's fish might turn into lizards (GerryNemo), Thursday, 19 October 2006 11:54 (nineteen years ago)

madonna - isaac (confessions on a dance floor)
tori amos - talula (boys for pele)
ellen allien - cloudy city (thrills)
vitalic - u and i (ok cowboy)
britney spears - i'm not a girl, not yet a woman (britney)
dizzee rascal - seems 2 be (boy in da corner)
björk - headphones (post)
kanye west - get 'em high (the college dropout)
kate bush - the big sky (hounds of love)

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 19 October 2006 11:58 (nineteen years ago)

Tom Waits - Rain Dogs - "Blind Love"
Blur - Parklife - "London Loves"
Boo Radleys - Giant Steps - "Wish I Was Skinny" (Or Barney And Me - didn't understand why they released the two most boring songs on the album as singles)
Aphex Twin - I Care Because You Do - "Acrid Avid Jam Shred"
Autechre - LP5 - "Acroyear2"
Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense - "Heaven"
Animal Collective - Sung Tongs - "Visiting Friends"
Abba - The Visitors - "When All Is Said And Done"

wogan lenin (dog latin), Thursday, 19 October 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

the lex, about 40% of those records would never appear on a q list

and yes, those are 10 of my favourite records. more cliches would appear on an expanded list, i'm sure. 'london calling', 'unknown pleasures', 'another green world' etc. but yeah, i've severely undervalued q if it's acknowledging my favourite stuff record for record.

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 19 October 2006 12:19 (nineteen years ago)

ok computer: fitter happier (ok, obvious choice...not that i dislike it or anything)

"Fitter Happier" works perfectly fine as the interlude it was meant to be. "Electioneering" is the only average track on "OK Computer", which for me makes it the weakest on the album.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 19 October 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

point taken :)
if we're gonna talk actual 'songs', my least fave is 'subterranean homesick alien', and i say that with a lot of regret as it's amazing and i love it.

'electioneering' captivates me to this day.

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 19 October 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

Black Sabbath Vol 4 - Changes

Rat Nasty (ratnasty), Thursday, 19 October 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

Royal Trux Accelerator - Another Year
Fleetwood Mac Tusk - What Makes You Think You're the One, Beautiful Child
Roxy Music For Your Pleasure - The Bogus Man
VU Loaded - Train Round the Bend
Sticky Fingers - Sister Morphine

And every King Crimson album I've heard has one song near the end of the album that's just pure wankery

Rat Nasty (ratnasty), Thursday, 19 October 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

kate bush - the big sky (hounds of love)

!!!!

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 19 October 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

well what would you choose! i like 'the big sky' but it is 8/10 whereas everything is like 12/10.

(partly is because it's so much in the same general vein as the two songs preceding it, but not quite as triumphant as either)

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 19 October 2006 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

I'll say it 1,000 times, Party for Your Right to Fight is a huge misstep

PappaWheelie: making friends with morons daily (PappaWheelie 2), Thursday, 19 October 2006 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

London Calling: 'The Card Cheat' seconded
Parklife: 'To The End'
For Your Pleasure: 'The Grey Lagoon'

zeus (zeus), Thursday, 19 October 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

"the big sky" is very triumphant and, more to the point, fucking HUGE! closest thing to a club banger she's ever done, "something good" not withstanding. i dunno, i'd probably pick "watching you without me" or "waking the witch."

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

I'd probably rather pick "Cloudbusting" as my least favourite track on that album. "The Big Sky" is perhaps the strongest on the "rhythmic" side 1.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 19 October 2006 20:53 (nineteen years ago)

"one hit" is the second best song on silent shout. "the captain" being the first.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Thursday, 19 October 2006 22:44 (nineteen years ago)

Close, but wrong again. It's "Silent Shout".

cosmo vitelli (cosmo vitelli), Thursday, 19 October 2006 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

since I get list-happy sometimes,

The Overload, from Remain In Light
Hit The Plane Down, from Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain
In A Silent Way/It's About That Time, from In A Silent Way ; )
Hit, from Alien Lanes
Treefingers, from Kid A

cosmo vitelli (cosmo vitelli), Thursday, 19 October 2006 23:18 (nineteen years ago)

new order - "we all stand"
always gotta lift the needle. otherwise perfect album.

Dan Gr (certain), Friday, 20 October 2006 03:55 (nineteen years ago)

Game Theory would move up 5 spots on my 2006 top ten list if "Can't Stop This" weren't on it.

M. V. (M.V.), Sunday, 22 October 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

The Big Sky becomes very repetitive after about a minute, great opening though.

Michael Ludes (ludesse), Sunday, 22 October 2006 17:41 (nineteen years ago)

Fodderstompf really isn't that great is it?

I am not bloody David Byrne (Bimble...), Sunday, 22 October 2006 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

Oh god. I know I'm going to burn in hell for saying that.

I am not bloody David Byrne (Bimble...), Sunday, 22 October 2006 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

indeed you is.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Sunday, 22 October 2006 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

"All Neon Like" has one of Björk's best melodies! It's so alien and interesting.

My least favorite on Homogenic would be "Alarm Call." Oh, and "It's Oh So Quiet" on Post. My least favorite on Laughing Stock would be "After the Flood," which I always skip.

Hmm. Some others...

"Tear in your Hand" - Tori Amos, Little Earthquakes
"Motion Picture Soundtrack" - Radiohead, Kid A

Turangalila (Salvador), Monday, 23 October 2006 05:36 (nineteen years ago)

And Ys isn't one my favorite albums ever, but I love it, and I could absolutely do without "Sawdust & Diamonds."

Turangalila (Salvador), Monday, 23 October 2006 05:38 (nineteen years ago)

ok, here goes:

NWA, straight outta compton, "quiet on tha set"
my bloody valentine, loveless, "i only said"
wu-tang clan, enter the 36 chambers, "tearz"
gza/genius, liquid swords, "B.I.B.L.E. (basic instructions before leaving earth)"
david bowie, station to station, "wild is the wind"
gary numan, telekon, "i'm an agent"
the kinks, village green preservation society, "the last of the steam-powered trains"
the velvet underground, white light/white heat, "here she comes now"
frank zappa, hot rats, "little umbrellas"
echo and the bunnymen, ocean rain, "the yo yo man"
public enemy, fear of a black planet, "meet the G that killed me"
brian eno, taking tiger mountain (by strategy), "the great pretender"

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 23 October 2006 06:10 (nineteen years ago)

some more:

geto boys, geto boys, "city under siege"
ween, the mollusk, "ocean man"
raekwon, only built for cuban linx, "spot rushers"
ol' dirty bastard, return to the 36 chambers, "brooklyn zoo II (tiger cane)"
depeche mode, some great reward, "if you want"
jay-z, reasonable doubt, "politics as usual"
radiohead, OK computer, "karma police"
biggie smalls, ready to die, "me and my bitch"
kraftwerk, trans-europe express, "hall of mirrors"
new order, power, corruption and lies, "leave me alone"
gary numan (again!), the pleasure principle, "conversation"
david bowie (again!), low, "weeping wall"

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 23 October 2006 06:28 (nineteen years ago)

the velvet underground, white light/white heat, "here she comes now"

It still puzzles me how anyone can not consider "Sister Ray" not only the worst thing on that album, but obviously the worst thing they ever did.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 23 October 2006 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

the london calling answer is actually london calling.

pscott (elwisty), Monday, 23 October 2006 11:27 (nineteen years ago)

bee thousand - mincer ray
kid a - treefingers

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Monday, 23 October 2006 11:29 (nineteen years ago)

Charlie hates instrumentals :-(

wogan lenin (dog latin), Monday, 23 October 2006 11:30 (nineteen years ago)

ahahahha

didn't spot the trend

i like (even prefer) instrumentals if it's eno

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Monday, 23 October 2006 11:33 (nineteen years ago)

"If You Want" is by far the best track on the otherwise slightly below-par "Music For The Masses".

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 23 October 2006 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

Hmmm. Sorry, I was thinking of "The Things You Said". "If You Want" is great too though, even though Martin wrote better songs for "Construction Time Again".

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 23 October 2006 11:47 (nineteen years ago)

Alan, that is

Listening to the 1982 Peel Sessions right now. Is the above the general consensus among NO fans? Because this Peel Session version sounds like Bark Psychosis and is amazing

this sounds crazy but I think it’d be liked better if it swapped track placements with “age of consent”

An obvious trap--whatever you say, someone who loves the (presumably good-to-great) album will say you're crazy. I wrote a fanzine piece on this 25 years ago--technically on my favourite albums, but singling out the songs I'm less than enthusiastic about--that I have on a Word document, so I can link to a Google Doc.

It’s kind of a weird exercise... when I think of my “favorite albums ever,” they’re most all killer / no filler. Picking a “worst song” would be a matter of nitpicking over fractional not-quite-total-greatness.

I don't really care for the 50-second sketch
"Box 25/4 Lid" at the end of the first Soft Machine LP, not sure why it's even there.
