I own two. I picked one of them.

Mark G, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 08:57 (nineteen years ago)

I was listening to Obey the Time repeatedly last night! I don't think I'm going to vote for it but it still sounds great.

Eley Rudge is a great singer and I find it most perplexing that she hasn't had a solo career.

I've never really got the whole "stop him singing" thing with regard to Vini actually - there are far worse voices that have been committed to record.

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 09:01 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I have a couple of live performances on a compilation DVD, he sings OK. I guess it's because people'd rather listen to the guitaring.

Mark G, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 09:11 (nineteen years ago)

i love his voice.

LC, unquestionably. but someone else's party is definitely in the top three, alongside the debut

electricsound, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 09:27 (nineteen years ago)

i've voted for "keep breathing", because it blew me away more than almost anything else last year. perverse, but hey :)

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

(and, really, deciding between LC and "the guitar ..." is impossible)

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

lc. the missing boy is one of my favourite songs of all time. sketch for dawn one of the greatest instrumentals ever. but the debut and another setting are very exquisite as well.

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 11:16 (nineteen years ago)

First 3 are (almost) inseparable. Sadly, I lost interest as time wore on, but I really really like "Say What You Mean, Mean What You Say" which is billed as a 12" single but is really a mini LP.

Tom D., Tuesday, 15 May 2007 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

Another Setting

dan selzer, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 11:30 (nineteen years ago)

Can't decide between "Return of.." and "LC". I'd def. give it to "Return of..." if it was the reissue with Lips That Would Kiss AND Madeline. I wouldn't rank Another Setting as high despite having The Beggar which is the best Vini-vocal song evah.

I have a soft spot for The Guitar and Other Machines because it's ace. And Keep Breathing was pretty great!

King Boy Pato, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 12:09 (nineteen years ago)

Tom D OTM about 'Say what you mean..... It's easily their best work.

I voted for Without Mercy, just ahead of Another Setting and Obey The Time

Dr.C, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

i think the reason i love "keep breathing" so much - and am going out on this spectacular limb here - is because i was absolutely gobsmacked by it; it wasn't what i expected at all, which in turn isn't what you might expect of a DC album.

i do feel like some kind of crazy iconoclast, but fuck it.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

Vini Reilly is the one...that "another sleepless night for me" sample on "Otis" gets me every time...(rather than Otis redding, I always think of Otis the drunk on The Andy Griffith Show, lamenting his wasted life in the Mayberry jail, in an alternate universe)...

henry s, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

agree w/ K B Pato above--the best lp: the 'Lips That Would Kiss' comp.

nerve_pylon, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

I can't imagine Rebellion getting any votes - I was *so* disappointed by that album. The world didn't need another versh of Fields of Athenrye.

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

Up the RA tho, eh Vini?

Tom D., Tuesday, 15 May 2007 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

unsurprising result. shocking turnout.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 07:46 (nineteen years ago)

I wasn't expecting a bigger turn-out tbh, many of my friends who know far more about music than I do said "who?" when I told them how excited I was that Durutti Column were playing Primavera Sound in Barcelona.

Not surprised that LC won but quite surprised Without Mercy just got the one vote.

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 08:24 (nineteen years ago)

That's the 'other' one of the two I mentioned, second post.

Is it that much better? I'll have to play it some more. (I got LP1 when it came out, got CD2 more recently)

Mark G, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 08:27 (nineteen years ago)

I can't believe I'm the only one who voted for Another Setting!

Maybe I like it because it has the most almost conventional post-punk/new wave/practically goth at times pop songwriting, balanced with enough instrumental tracks.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

sixteen years pass...

What’s good n the 90s? I tried Obey the Time but that sounded like a cheesy bootleg remix. Fidelity sounds more interesting

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Sunday, 9 July 2023 21:07 (two years ago)

I absolutely love Obey The Time so I'm not sure I can help you much here

NickB, Sunday, 9 July 2023 21:12 (two years ago)

(recently reissued) time was gigantic is one my favorites out of the entire catalogue. it has tablas 🙂

meg white's superior technique. (Austin), Sunday, 9 July 2023 21:26 (two years ago)

I didn't know they'd finally reissued that! Worth buying for one track alone, For Rachel:

For quite some time, the "Factory Once" sets were an easy cheap pickup in Fopp, a fiver or less.

These days, harder to find but they pop up occasionally in the wild.

Got around six of those, plus the 4cd Factory set

Mark G, Tuesday, 11 July 2023 08:36 (two years ago)

nine months pass...

a new remastered+expanded vini reilly hit streaming recently and this "monarchy mix" of "my country" that showed in the bonus material is very new to me:

kind of balearic coffee shop vibes. i like it.

interstellar anthropologist+music philosopher, (Austin), Saturday, 20 April 2024 17:29 (two years ago)

That’s the stuff. Love it when the Vini vibes hit the dance floor.

henry s, Saturday, 20 April 2024 18:49 (two years ago)

circuses and bread was robbed in this poll! "Black Horses" might be my favorite DC song. its got "tomorrow" on it! madness. and Without Mercy gets one vote?

this poll is from when i hid polls. so that i would not see polls. now i know why i hid them! a bunch of nutters on here!

scott seward, Saturday, 20 April 2024 21:35 (two years ago)

Not many Durutti fans here at the time, probably less now. I only got into them at a late date, too.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Saturday, 20 April 2024 21:58 (two years ago)

'Love No More' I could listen to every night, before bed...so feels a little strange it's the opener.

nashwan, Saturday, 20 April 2024 22:07 (two years ago)

as a self-proclaimed dc snob, may i just say that lc as the best album is such a 2007 answer (eyeroll emoji)

scott otm! revisit circuses+bread, it's very good 80s singy-vini column.
