Second Edition (Metal Box) over Dirty Mind and Remain in Light for me.

JN$OT, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

Pretenders for me, but half a dozen others would have sufficed.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

My vote goes to my 2nd or 3rd favorite Beefheart album.

o. nate, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

the only one i've heard is X of all things!!!

lex pretend, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

Lex, you've never heard Michael Jackson's Off the Wall? I guess that's just more old r'n'b for some of you youngsters.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 17:27 (nineteen years ago)

i confess i didn't even look down the list before voting--for dirty mind. takes it pretty easily, for me.

sw00ds, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

this was the first P&J I ever saw, by the way. changed everything.

sw00ds, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

Jeez, first P&J section I ever actually got my hands on was the '87 edition. Although I was pretty much aware of the poll by '84 or so.

JN$OT, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

Doc At The Radar Station, with the Feelies and a buncha guys filed in the "P" section as runners-up.

(Off The Wall was already on the 1979 P&J, wtf?!)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

But this year both imports and "late-breaking" 1979 LPs were eligible, a change that had worked well when we introduced singles balloting in the previous poll. As a result, Michael Jackson's Off the Wall appears in our top 40 for the second time, Pink Floyd's The Wall sneaks in for the first, and two imports--Joy Division's Closer and Young Marble Giants' Colossal Youth--also make the list.

JN$OT, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

So many 1980 albums I love-London Calling;Second Edition;
Doc at the Radar Station; Get Happy!! ;Hotter Than July ; Dirty Mind; Entertainment!; Just Can't Stop It ; Closer ; Warm Thoughts. I only picked up Colossal Youth and the Feelies years later.

I think the Up Escalator only made the list because Graham Parker's 1979 Squeezing Out Sparks was so highly regarded. The Up Escalator was a big, uh letdown.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, I'm old, what can I say? The truth is, I don't even think I'd heard of the Village Voice prior to this issue. My brother picked this up and gave it to me because the Clash were on the cover. It took me a long time to make sense of any of it.

sw00ds, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 18:00 (nineteen years ago)

Testing.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 18:03 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, okay. I thought I posted something about being split between voting for Los Angeles, which I've listened to more (I think), and Remain in Light (or Remain The Light as my Portuguese cassette copy used to say), which I somehow feel I should vote for, maybe because of "Once in a Lifetime."

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

xp: Oh fear not, I'm quite old myself. The main reason I never saw an earlier edition was because I lived in L.A. at the time--where we didn't know about that there New Yawk culture rag, y'see.

JN$OT, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

Lex, you've never heard Michael Jackson's Off the Wall? I guess that's just more old r'n'b for some of you youngsters.

not the album (i've never felt the need to acquire any mj albums because his standards are still so omnipresent)

lex pretend, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

The track "Los Angeles" would probably top my singles ballot, but the album doesn't have enough else going for it.

o. nate, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

London Calling, easilly. What a year, though.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

Voted for "Peter Gabriel" in the abscense of "Gentlemen Take Polaroids". Obviously, P&J hadn't quite discovered New Pop in 1980 (or maybe "Gentlemen..." wasn't released in the US until 1981?)

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

I voted for "The Specials". Might have voted for "Queen of Siam" had Specials not been available.

Pashmina, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

Embarrassment of riches here but if it's one, it's Get Happy!!

ellaguru, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

Dirty Mind very closely over Second Edition. Tons of could-have, though.

Matos W.K., Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

Matos OTM on choice and second choice. But some of these I've heard so much -- London Calling, Pretenders -- that they're rarely played around my house anymore.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 23:43 (nineteen years ago)

I enter a message.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 23:46 (nineteen years ago)

Second Edition, edging out Dirty Mind (third place: Off the Wall, I guess. Fourth place: maybe X, which actually surprises me! Honorable mention: Iron City Fucking Houserockers (though in reality Have a Good Time (But Get Out Alive) isn't all that much better than their previous and heavier Love's So Tough.

xhuxk, Thursday, 17 May 2007 11:30 (nineteen years ago)

Oops, also (Greil's PiL choice and Lester's Clash choice are somewhat amusing, I think):

xhuxk, Thursday, 17 May 2007 11:40 (nineteen years ago)

Last day to vote.

JN$OT, Thursday, 17 May 2007 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

And I find it kind of funny how an album who has had to deal with a lot of shit on ILM through the years wins the entire poll. :)

Geir Hongro, Friday, 18 May 2007 13:19 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, but it wasn't much of a poll; only 42 votes total.

JN$OT, Friday, 18 May 2007 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

Probably not worth continuing.
