106 & Park Begs More Questions Than It Answers (aka rapping miami vice)

so i was out of the country for a while. when i got home and watched 106 & park and all the songs were new and totally snowed out and sparkly and 80's. i enjoyed it a great deal. especially this umbrellahellahellaheheheheh song. that song is the fucking best.

anyway this sound - it is miami, no? i mean i noticed it before with pitbull and rick ross and somewhat the new jeezy - but now it's fullblown everywhere. so where'd it come from? who're the super producer geniuses behind this one? what're the connections to this mid-80's sweeping grandeur. what's good? i'm ready to go.

thx

There's a thread about Umbrella. Rihanna is Barbadan, btw, with no connections to Miami that I know of. I have no idea who produced it.

I haven't caught 106&P in a hot minute, what else was on?

ilm is not my friend

I'd get last year's DJ Khaled album if you haven't already. I'm sad no one responded to this since I love this production style and I have a feeling I'm missing out on a lot of good shit.

Yeah I don't think this is necessarily a Miami thing in anything but the most abstract sense (the only Miami artist on the countdown right now is Rick Ross on "We Takin' Over"), although it kinda feels like every rapper in the world spends half the year in Miami these days so maybe it's some kind of vague pervasive vibe. Cool & Dre and The Runners and the Diaz Brothers are definitely developing a certain Miami production aesthetic that kind of matches what's described above, but the only song any of them have had on 106 & Park lately is Jeezy's "Dreamin'" by The Runners, which isn't really sparkly or 80s or whatever. I guess I could see "Get It Shawty" and "Umbrella" and "Buy U A Drank" fitting into whatever this crackpot theory is, though.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 21 May 2007 02:54 (nineteen years ago)

ok excellent. you should see me downloading - so beautiful.

so in so far as one aspect this crack pop theory is the relationship between this new music and some type of 80's cocaine inspired hitz... uh, i guess what i'm trying to ask is let's say you were making a mix that had umbrella and welcome to miami on it - what songs from the 80s would you put on there. anymore contemporary song suggestions, also appreciated.

jhøshea, Monday, 21 May 2007 13:21 (nineteen years ago)

i kinda feel like maybe there's some detroit techno that could flow w/this?

jhøshea, Monday, 21 May 2007 13:26 (nineteen years ago)

fergie 'glamorous', nelly furtado 'say it right', diddy + keyshia cole 'last night' sounds really 80's to me.. lots of polow da don tracks, but he's atlanta not miami

the 80's style is really everywhere now, though - lots of the teenagers i see buying clothes in h&m downtown dc are wearing bright colors, 80's silhouettes and hairstyles, chunky jewelry including those big gold chains a la run dmc

five months pass...

RIP DJ Megatron; amazingly fucked up and pointless killing over the weekend.
They forced the hosts of 106 and Park to soldier through the episode and it was INSANE television; both Terence and Rocsi were coming apart at the seams, visibly falling apart and near hysterics but BET was launching their big 106 and Park iPad app and all this new branding and Wale and Mindless Behavior and Mary Mary were on so they pasted on lost smiles and dead eyes and oh my god it was astonishingly fucked up television.

Ouch. RIP young guy and father.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 13:34 (fifteen years ago)

I wish I'd known Jordan was live-commenting the 106 anniversary when I was watching it. Bow Wow really is weirdly tough-and-tiny.

Re: Megatron, seriously sad. It's also been bugging me to notice that this gets reported in about 8 billion places that would never have considered anything the guy actually did newsworthy. Or maybe not "bugging" me -- I understand why it works out that way -- but it's depressing and misleading.

like a half hour later on what's more or less a live show, they're asking mindless behavior what touring with janet is like.
terence and rocsi looked so dead inside.

slight even by tweet standards (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 19:05 (fifteen years ago)

really ridiculous that they chose to air this episode; utterly insane.

this guy is a clown but man, really feel bad for him that they forced him into this position.
