Is this a Vini Reilly type scenario?

I think it's part of the charm, personally. He's always been wordy, and at least the songs go somewhere and have some unique perspective/direction to them.

I really couldn't be surprised that Pitchfork would give the album a 5.9 today, given that it's been a divider of tolerances already. I did think they'd at least handle Voxtrot creating an album that's more of a grower than a sensation with more intelligence. Instead, the review just comes across as confused (saying something is "buried in the mix" on an album that's nearly too slickly produced doesn't really work) and disappointed, which in the review world is kind of just dissing yourself. They should have at least found a reviewer with something fresh to say. Using that "Reaching for the Lasers" doc as a backbone for the piece? That should be hint number one. I wonder if the reviewer even listened to the album in an actual album format or just worked off some crummy leaked mp3s.

i'm i wrong to think that because the only two voxtrot songs i don't like ("wrecking force," "long haul") i didnt like on first listen and never really grew to like, i won't grow to like the album?
(btw, i've listened to the album twice all the way through.)
