I am boring enough to vote for "The Word Girl". "Wood Beez" is just as likely as the winner though.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 25 May 2007 10:26 (nineteen years ago)

Perfect Way

Joe, Friday, 25 May 2007 12:46 (nineteen years ago)

How does one choose between "Perfect Way" and "Absolute"?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 25 May 2007 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

ILM quite split on this. Disappointing showing for "Wood Beez".

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 2 June 2007 01:52 (nineteen years ago)

Christ, people! Give a person a chance to vote why don't ya? I never even saw this poll. It must have sank like a stone.

I repeat: how do we choose between "Absolute" and "Perfect Way"?

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 18 July 2011 02:27 (fourteen years ago)

Still love this album for all it's outrageousness.

It will test our very souls.

Forget Kate Bush: the Fairlight exists for those two songs.

Small talk

Awesomely pretentious lyrics. Have loved this album since I was a oyung teen.

Who made those dub versions of absolute and wood beez? Were they just done by scritti?

CRANK IT YA FILTHY BISM! (jed_), Sunday, 29 May 2016 04:14 (ten years ago)

The ones on the CD? Absolute is remixed bun Gary Langan, I believe, if the Discogs singles are to be trusted. He did the original mix as well. Discogs isn't clear who did Wood Beez.

absolute on powerdrive

brimstead, Saturday, 23 January 2021 18:13 (five years ago)

How many listeners did this record convert to hard-core leftism? And how many to deconstructivism?

Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 23 January 2021 18:41 (five years ago)

the latter for me

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 23 January 2021 18:43 (five years ago)

Well, it made me more open to Deconstruction about 25 years ago.

meticulously crafted, socially responsible, morally upsta (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 23 January 2021 18:49 (five years ago)

Should this record have come with a lyric sheet, or would that have been overdoing the cerebral element?

Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 23 January 2021 18:56 (five years ago)

Lyrics sheets are for rubes

the scamp has a thousand fries (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 23 January 2021 18:57 (five years ago)

this is very from-the-hip (appropriate considering the album) but my feeling from this record is less that it's a mission statement for deconstruction or leftism and more "an exploration of the impossibility and mystery of love influenced by poet/philosopher jacques derrida and probably other obscure semi-mystical deep-language weirdos". i.e. if you had been electrified by derrida you would have probably been blown away by these lyrics but if you were coming to this from idk a lot of other post-punk-adjacent literary influences more rooted in bleak modernism it might have seemed pretty tutti frutti.

satanist of size (map), Saturday, 23 January 2021 19:17 (five years ago)

Thanks for that reply four years ago, NTI.

No problem. Langan’s drum sound from era—elsewhere heard on 90125 and Beauty Stab—is unmistakable on this song but I’m not sure I heard him do much in the way of remixes unless Art of Noise counts. Which it probably should.

Naive Teen Idol, Saturday, 23 January 2021 19:19 (five years ago)

I was already a pomo Marxist when I fell in love with Scritti so that's how it went down

Wood Beez (Pray Like Aretha Franklin) 1

wtf..

piscesx, Saturday, 23 January 2021 23:26 (five years ago)

Yeah that's crazy but I would have also just thrown another vote to "Absolute". Such a beautiful song

Vinnie, Saturday, 23 January 2021 23:54 (five years ago)

shame that we can't consider the "The Word Girl (Version)"...

― henry s,

I can't remember what I voted for but this is otm.

Pie face (jed_), Sunday, 24 January 2021 00:04 (five years ago)

My copy comes with a lyric sheet.

I don't need it because this album is more an exploration of how to make songs sound fabulous with Linn drums and sample keyboards so long as Arif Mardin and David Gamson produce.

meticulously crafted, socially responsible, morally upsta (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 25 January 2021 02:27 (five years ago)

usually just let that sort of take alone but it's too wrong in this case. the lyrics and gg's vocals are a crucial part of the appeal of this record.

satanist of size (map), Monday, 25 January 2021 03:02 (five years ago)

i only know snippets of the lyrics to this and i've never looked up what i'm missing but still, those snippets, i couldn't imagine these songs without their nerdy, heady, fey take on the appeal of pop music.

satanist of size (map), Monday, 25 January 2021 03:07 (five years ago)

During normal times when I karaoked the number of lines surprised me.

meticulously crafted, socially responsible, morally upsta (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 25 January 2021 03:10 (five years ago)

not trying to be rude.. just, i love these lyrics and think they are very, very special lol

satanist of size (map), Monday, 25 January 2021 03:11 (five years ago)

they're great, and I know they're great because they're literate and written to the rhythms.

meticulously crafted, socially responsible, morally upsta (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 25 January 2021 03:13 (five years ago)

the final verse of "A Little Knowledge" got me through a breakup once

Roz, Monday, 25 January 2021 03:27 (five years ago)

Sorry for starting this epic lyric sheet battle, I see my LP does contain one. All I could remember was the bathroom photo on the other side of the insert.

Halfway there but for you, Monday, 25 January 2021 04:12 (five years ago)

I can't believe there's never been a deluxe reissue! What are the key remixes you'd want to see?

I quite like:
Perfect Way (Way Perfect mix)
Hypnotize (Long)
The Word Girl (Flesh & Blood) (version)
Perfect Way (Way Perfect version)
Scritti Politti Turntable mix

According to Discogs, there's over a dozen version of "Perfect Way".

David Gamson will now also be chipping in here at @scrittipolitti. Set your alarms! Starts at 10pm sharp. https://t.co/fcHa48kjbD
