Just noticed this today - it looks mostly like a compilation of the 12s but I am quite anxious to hear it. Could this be the first dubstep compilation that I will be able to stay awake through? It even includes the much anticipated Villalobos remix a.k.a. one of the many tracks hyped by dance music journalists 50000 years before mere mortals like me could get our hands on it.

I agree... the only other dubstep comp I listened to repeatedly and without the afformentioned boredom was the Shackleton mix posted on the Skull Disco site last year... In fact I probably listened to it as much as any album I paid for. Anybody know where to order this from in the US?

DUBSTEP ALLSTARS 5 IS FUCKING SICK YOU NONCES. BUY A PROPER PAIR OF SPEAKERS.
― jim, Saturday, 26 May 2007 00:03 (nineteen years ago)
I actually didn't like this comp. that much but I do like the "Soundboy's Ashes Get Chopped Out And Snorted E.P" a lot. 'Vansan' is almost basic channel-sounding and the sleeve art is bonkers.
― am0n, Saturday, 26 May 2007 02:25 (nineteen years ago)
"Blood On My Hands": Wow (both the original and the 18-minute Villalobos version).
― Daniel, Esq., Monday, 5 November 2007 03:25 (eighteen years ago)
So what does everyone think of the new single "Next To Nothing"? A SAVAGE REPUBLIC COVER hah! w/ vocals by the original singer Jackson Del Ray (this is making me want to hear Tragic Figures again!)
― Alex in SF, Sunday, 16 December 2007 03:45 (eighteen years ago)
The single also comes with remixes by Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts (decent, this combination totally makes sense) and Exercise One (haven't heard this one yet).
― littlewhiteearbuds, Sunday, 16 December 2007 05:39 (eighteen years ago)
didn't it come out like 6 months ago? not his best moment, I'd say.
― Michael F Gill, Sunday, 16 December 2007 06:56 (eighteen years ago)
Ah yes it does appear to be old(er). I guess none of the Savage Republic fans on this board have heard it as I don't see mention of it anywhere else. It's not his best moment (song would actually be better without vocals probably and the two remixes add very little) but it's still an interesting idea.

I finally bought this today- A+ for music, shittiest packaging I have ever seen. It's basically a paper folder with the two CDs inside, like you'd get for a promo copy. Probably going to get a double jewel case and cut the artwork up to fit in.
― Telephone thing, Saturday, 13 September 2008 21:47 (seventeen years ago)
hmm are you sure you didn't actually get a promo copy?
― moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 13 September 2008 22:35 (seventeen years ago)
mine's got crisp one-color printing on nice, thick, textured inky-black card stock. the CDs fit inside in white paper sleeves that are also thick and textured. heavier than book weight stock, for sure.
i can't imagine how sticking it into a flimsy clear plastic box would class it up, but to each his own.
― moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 13 September 2008 22:38 (seventeen years ago)
Not "class" so much as keeping them safe, really- I've had bad experiences with CD packaging that left discs scratched all to hell after a few years (like that 2xCD GYBE! album, not that I really want to listen to it much anymore, but dammit, it's the principle of the thing). I'm sure it wasn't an actual promo- I ordered it directly from Beggars Banquet. Maybe there's a difference between the US and UK releases; there are no inner sleeves for the CD here, just the outer cardboard gatefold. No textured cardstock either.
― Telephone thing, Sunday, 14 September 2008 02:38 (seventeen years ago)
not to beat a dead horse but the outer cardboard cover on mine is almost as thick as like, the "aluminum tunes" thing by stereolab, and the inner paper sleeves inside are as thick as the sleeves they sometimes use for CD singles or promos.
― moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 14 September 2008 06:58 (seventeen years ago)
i got it off emusic with no packaging at all. but it still sounds good.
― tipsy mothra, Sunday, 14 September 2008 07:36 (seventeen years ago)
Wait, wait, wait, WTF? A dubstep version of 'Next to Nothing'? I've got to hear this.
― Soukesian, Sunday, 14 September 2008 08:30 (seventeen years ago)
so skull disco is over now, right? what do people think of 'soundboy's suicide note,' or his split with mordant music? the former is very much in the vein of his villalobos remix, the mordant 12 sounding a little more 'hamas rule' but with skittery percussion similar to the newer stuff
― lucas pine, Sunday, 14 September 2008 19:30 (seventeen years ago)
It is? Since when? They just released a 12" and there is supposed to be a remix record and a Shackleton album soon, I thought.
― Alex in SF, Sunday, 14 September 2008 19:37 (seventeen years ago)
Also my copy of Soundboy Punishments is like moonship's. Nice packaging IMO.
― Alex in SF, Sunday, 14 September 2008 19:54 (seventeen years ago)
pretty sure the album is another roundup comp, and the remix record is coming out on ~scape? think this was in an appleblim interview i read not too long ago, i'll try to find it
― lucas pine, Sunday, 14 September 2008 19:56 (seventeen years ago)
"The Rope Tightens" features another LKJ-sound-a-like. Patience for this kind of spoken-woetry vary.
― Alex in SF, Sunday, 14 September 2008 19:56 (seventeen years ago)
Haven't heard the MM-split though.
― Alex in SF, Sunday, 14 September 2008 19:57 (seventeen years ago)
Saw something recently, on Resident Advisor or someplace similar, that they'll be putting out their last 12" soon along with the second, more remix-heavy Skull Disco comp. Lucas, the ~scape remix EP is already out.

Oh I see. Shackleton said something similar like a year and a half ago and there've been what three? four? releases since then so I've been taking it with a grain of salt. I will miss their art most of all.

so
― moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 11 December 2008 18:43 (seventeen years ago)
lyrics by "vengeance tenfold" are aaaaaawwwwful IMO
― moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 11 December 2008 18:45 (seventeen years ago)
what, nobody?
― moonship journey to baja, Friday, 12 December 2008 00:22 (seventeen years ago)
not heard this yet.
― what U cry 4 (jim), Friday, 12 December 2008 00:27 (seventeen years ago)
Obviously not the answer you were looking for but I didn't want to leave you hanging.
that's not the answer i was looking for
― moonship journey to baja, Friday, 12 December 2008 00:39 (seventeen years ago)
surely people have heard the EPs
Haven't heard the comp, but I like the stuff on the original comp better than 6, 8-10 combined probably. That said 6 is probably their best single release. Pity the excellent Shackleton half of that Mordant Music split isn't on this. Haven't heard any of the remixes except what /rupture played on his show last night and that didn't stick.
― Alex in SF, Friday, 12 December 2008 05:23 (seventeen years ago)
Lyrics on "Death Is Not Final" and "The Rope Tightens" are uh forgettable at best sadly.
― Alex in SF, Friday, 12 December 2008 05:24 (seventeen years ago)
all he says on "death is not final" is "death is not final ... it is a misunderstanding of time"
― moonship journey to baja, Friday, 12 December 2008 06:25 (seventeen years ago)
but yeah, "the rope tightens" is sorta awful.
― moonship journey to baja, Friday, 12 December 2008 06:26 (seventeen years ago)
i'm sorta split. at times the beats seem way slicker on the new stuff. which is sorta good, except that sometimes it sounds like badawi. wait, is that a bad thing?
tenfold vengeance is awful, yeah. 'the rope tightens' so cringeworthy... i can ignore him on 'death is not final'.
very into the t++ remix of vansan. not so fussed about any of the others (including uh, the badawi, which sounds like a budget monolake)
― resolved, Friday, 12 December 2008 09:48 (seventeen years ago)
in fact lyrics on 'the rope tightens' so bad it's stopped me from completing my skull disco 12" collection.
― resolved, Friday, 12 December 2008 09:50 (seventeen years ago)
I like the Badawi mix a lot more than you do, I think, on first listen.
― Alex in SF, Monday, 15 December 2008 19:33 (seventeen years ago)
The rest of the Rope Tightens EP is fine though plus it has probably the best art of any of the 12"s.
― Alex in SF, Monday, 15 December 2008 19:34 (seventeen years ago)
Blech but I am listening to "The Rope Tightens" right and I remember now why I tried to forget the lyrics.
― Alex in SF, Monday, 15 December 2008 19:44 (seventeen years ago)
i'll buy the rope tightens EP eventually for completism's sake, the rest is decent. I'm a little harsh on the Badawi up there, yes. wish the remixes 2x12" was a single 12" with Vansan T++ on one side, Badawi on the other, because the rest of the stuff on it really is entirely forgettable.
― resolved, Monday, 15 December 2008 20:33 (seventeen years ago)
WHY DID THEY HAVE TO BLEMISH SKULL DISCO WITH THE ROPE TIGHTENS? SO BAD.
― BleepBot, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 01:40 (seventeen years ago)
so these vol. 1 and vol. 2 are the EPs everyone's referring to above? the few lyrics i can make-out from the rope tightens during the :30 sample is terrible. but the rest sounds intriguing.
― Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 25 July 2010 03:42 (fifteen years ago)
sorry, "are terrible."
Yes Vol 1 is the remaining Skull Disco 12"s not collected on Soundboy Punishments. Vol 2 is the remixes of those 12"s.
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Sunday, 25 July 2010 15:22 (fifteen years ago)
so, after years of enjoying volume 1 i eventually dropped the cash on the wire for volume 2.
(was worried that a second hand copy of volume 2 would be skuffed up due to the packaging, but its perfect, so, not too bad for a fiver !)
still sounding good this stuff.
