I've always wanted a reel to reel recording machine. I would imagine they would get a cool sound, and if I get two I can maybe do some frippertronics.
There are a bunch selling on ebay in the 30 dollar range. Should I beware? Will these not work? What should I look out for? Is it impossible to find blank tape? Is this just a bad idea altogether? What do you think?

its a bad idea
I already use a computer to record. I was thinking about using a reel to reel for initial recording and then multi tracking digitally. I prefer the sound of tape, especially for drums which never sound very good recorded digitally.
For the most part I was thinking about using it to play tape loops, or get effects like The Boredoms got when they played that reel to reel super fast through an effects pedal.
I'm just wondering if anything in the 30 dollar range is going to be useless?

yeah you'd be better off buying one that you can verify as being in working order for what you want to do from someone you can trust
