Without Me (followed closely by Lose Yourself, The Real Slim Shady, and Ass Like That)

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

"Forgot About Dre" wasn't late '99??

billstevejim, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

it was on a late '99 album, but I don't think it was a single/video til 2000.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

I was all "Eminem sucks, Eminem is so passe" until two days ago, when I heard "Lose Yourself" on the radio for the first time since whenever and remembered what was so amazing about it. So there's my vote.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

"Cleanin Out My Closet" has several hints of being a good song.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 31 May 2007 01:46 (nineteen years ago)

Busy tonight, acrobat?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 31 May 2007 01:50 (nineteen years ago)

If it'd been a single, I'd have voted for his Jay Z collab "Renegade."

Fa' sho

The Reverend, Thursday, 31 May 2007 02:07 (nineteen years ago)

Alfred Soto. I am trying to make an IMPORTANT POINT about how Eminem has gone from "most important voice of his generation" / "best poet since keats" to... and some of those threads are piss funny.

Y know now is a weird time to talk about Em' cos he is in that position where he is no longer the great cultural talking point but history / his status in the canon has yet to solidify.

Eminem/Mary-Kate Ashley faux pas

acrobat, Thursday, 31 May 2007 08:04 (nineteen years ago)

In 2000, Axl Rose dissapears off the radar for the last time.

In 2001, Dr Dre sees nonexistant talent in the foul-mouthed white boy who was shining his shoes in front of the Safeway.

i'm still waiting for history/the canon to fully acknowledge how totally goddamn weird those first two eminem albums are. they are by far the weirdest megaselling records of my lifetime. even weirder than prince. like zappa/beefheart/kool keith levels of weirdness but they sold millions and millions. i guess because the "white boy rapper" thing somewhat obscured what a very strange white boy rapper he was. (not that the 3rd and 4th albums aren't weird, but it had started to turn shticky by then and also he wasn't as angry or funny anymore.)

i voted "the way i am" just because.

tipsy mothra, Thursday, 31 May 2007 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

plenty of mega-selling rap albums are weirder, but i guess you mean white rapper weirdness

and what, Thursday, 31 May 2007 15:33 (nineteen years ago)

Definitely Drug Ballad for me! I didn't know it was a single, though.

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 31 May 2007 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

drug ballads top billin jack is classic but the raps is ehhh

depends on how you define weirdness i guess, or mega-selling. sonically weirder for sure, but i dunno subject-wise. who are you thinking? none of the other top 10 or 20 megaselling rappers seem as weird to me. better, some of them, obviously, but not weirder.

Chromski A.K. Gattlington, Friday, 1 June 2007 06:33 (nineteen years ago)

Y know now is a weird time to talk about Em' cos he is in that position where he is no longer the great cultural talking point but history / his status in the canon has yet to solidify.

Eminem's status in the canon will remain dependant first and foremost on his first two albums and their critical status over time. The fact that his album releases these days are less popular and less acclaimed doesn't mean anything as they weren't what put him in the canon in the first place.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 1 June 2007 07:50 (nineteen years ago)

Now here's the guy that, looking back, should've been first in that "Fading Stars of This Decade" thread I started awhile back. It's really amazing to look back at those first few videos and singles as it's one of the first times I see something from this decade and am appalled by how dated it is.

Cunga, Friday, 1 June 2007 08:06 (nineteen years ago)

that's the point. it's weird looking back at all these threads with their hysterical proclomations of genius and then actually listening again to the music. i have a feeling eminem's not gonna get "cannonized" as such cos the rock and pop chattering classes who so liked discussing the phenomenon have very little interest in him after the novelty and panic has gone. perhaps it's always been easier to talk about 'em in the discourse of rock shock rather than y know hip hop.

geir you are quite wrong. his later work will influence the way he is thought of overall, i'm sure you can think of artists who, perhaps in the short term, have had their earlier work overshadowed by later "mistakes".

acrobat, Friday, 1 June 2007 08:17 (nineteen years ago)

What's also funny about Eminem is that, though he was definitely around during the "internet era," he seems to belong to a certain period that's come and gone. He was one of the last artists that was tremendously popular before mp3 players really eclipsed CDs and before social networking. Had Eminem's career arc been just a little bit different he could've been the archetype that would've been all over the place when Myspace exploded two or three years ago. My goodness, Panic Over My Chemical Fallout isn't nearly so bad when you remember that Durst/Eminem ruled the same demographic years earlier and their influence was thankfully waning around the time teenagers were putting themselves on the internet.

Cunga, Friday, 1 June 2007 08:21 (nineteen years ago)

hmm there's an arguement that could be put that Panic Over My Chemical Fallout are actually reflective of their digital mileu. that their of feminized narcistic aggression is a lot more in tune with the myspace culture than the nu-metal lot. it's a chicken / egg thing maybe.

acrobat, Friday, 1 June 2007 08:27 (nineteen years ago)

Oh sure. That's a very good point. Still, I'm thankful Eminem/Durst worship missed the myspace/e-hype bus right when it was picking up steam.

Cunga, Friday, 1 June 2007 08:33 (nineteen years ago)

geir you are quite wrong. his later work will influence the way he is thought of overall

Obviously this happened to Prince, for instance.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 1 June 2007 09:05 (nineteen years ago)

Hasn't happened, I mean

Geir Hongro, Friday, 1 June 2007 09:06 (nineteen years ago)

Is Eminem really a part of the nu metal movement? Sure he was around at the same time and similarly "angry" but he got a hell of a lot more kudos than anyone vaguely connected with that stuff ever got. Linkin Park could possibly be the link between that stuff and Panic Over My Chemical Fallout. Hybrid Theory is, lest we forget, the biggest selling rock album this decade right?

I started this thread cos of a post i made on this thread: why is it acceptable to disparage the white (british) working classes?

jus observing my 16 yr old brother's friends it seems emo and indie are sort of collapsing into each other, with stuff like hellogoodbye, fall out boy, the gossip and the klaxxons all seemingly occupying the same place, even hip hop and rnb seems a lot more "acceptable". when i was his age there was little musical common ground between the kids into limp bizkit, the kids into badly drawn boy and the kids into irv gotti. oh apart from eminem. everyone liked eminem.

-- acrobat, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 15:48 (Yesterday) Bookmark Link

I sort of surprised myself remembering how utterly massive Eminem was for a few years.

acrobat, Friday, 1 June 2007 09:11 (nineteen years ago)

Although Eminem is white, raps and is hated by parents and teachers for his language and lyrics, doesn't mean he is nu metal.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 1 June 2007 09:35 (nineteen years ago)

Of course not. I was referring more to audience in regards to massive popularity amongst teenage boys than the music.

Cunga, Friday, 1 June 2007 09:51 (nineteen years ago)

Eminem was in Kerrang! during their big shorts era, if he wasn't nu-metal in sound he was in spirit.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 1 June 2007 10:00 (nineteen years ago)

that's the thing thou he was so dominant cos he captured every possible market. i mean he was melody maker album of the year 2000, he was inescapable. i mean has anyone else bridged the divides of pop / rock / rap in the same way since? could it even happen again?

acrobat, Friday, 1 June 2007 10:14 (nineteen years ago)

too many "i means".

acrobat, Friday, 1 June 2007 10:16 (nineteen years ago)

The persona is kind of interesting. I mean, he was this über-macho arrogant guy dissing just about everyone and everything. And in the same breath he sort of introduced emotion into two cultures ("white trash and hip-hop) that have mostly been considerably more about macho than about emo.

Didn't he have a couple of singles on Rawkus? (if thousands-selling Rawkus vinyl count as singles in this way)

1. "Forgot About Dre"
2. "Smack That"
3. "Guilty Conscience"

milo z, Saturday, 2 June 2007 06:19 (nineteen years ago)

I voted for "Ass Like That" because it's the one that gets stuck in my head the most - even though I would have to say the best by FAR are "Lose Yourself" and "Without Me."

Also, my most neglected thread ever:

TS: Ass Like That vs. Just Lose It

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 2 June 2007 22:58 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, looking down that list of releases it sort of gives the lie to how inescapably huge Eminem was. I mean, he was, but look at these numbers:

2000 "The Way I Am" 58 26 - 8 The Marshall Mathers LP
2001 "Drug Ballad" - 71 - - The Marshall Mathers LP
2002 "My Dad's Gone Crazy" - 64 - - The Eminem Show
2002 "Business" - 77 25 - The Eminem Show
2002 "8 Mile" - 54 - - 8 Mile Soundtrack
2004 "Encore" (featuring Dr. Dre & 50 Cent) 25 48 20 - Encore
2005 "Like Toy Soldiers" 34 64 - 1 Encore
2005 "Ass Like That" 60 93 - 4 Encore

So it's not like everything he touched turned to gold. At the same time, though, you look at the shockingly high performance of clearly b-list material ("Sing For The Moment" at #14, for example) and you have to say there's no way it would have charted that high except that it was an Eminem single...

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 2 June 2007 23:09 (nineteen years ago)

all those ones released in the uk did crazy good thou. but then i don't understand the us charts.

Btw, "Real Slim Shady" totally got robbed in this poll. I didn't vote for it, but it would've been my #2.
