I already feel guilty about it.

we need more music made by animals. where's that worm-powered synthesizer? that dude had the right idea
― bernard snowy, Thursday, 31 May 2007 05:01 (nineteen years ago)
BHAHAHAAHAH INDIE is the NEW music taking over the country? Which country?
― Bimble, Thursday, 31 May 2007 05:06 (nineteen years ago)
Ohio Players to thread. (xp)
― The Reverend, Thursday, 31 May 2007 05:06 (nineteen years ago)

OR IS IT???!!!

except for Boston. Everyone else gets their guitars taken away.
― kenan, Thursday, 31 May 2007 05:10 (nineteen years ago)
Because linking to "Funky Worm" is always a good idea, here's your worm-powered synthesizer.
― The Reverend, Thursday, 31 May 2007 05:11 (nineteen years ago)
Wait, how are Boston "indie"?
― Bimble, Thursday, 31 May 2007 05:11 (nineteen years ago)
they aren't, but indy's baltimore
― bernard snowy, Thursday, 31 May 2007 05:12 (nineteen years ago)
Okay that Funky Worm track is insane.
― Bimble, Thursday, 31 May 2007 05:15 (nineteen years ago)
man, if you don't understand how one of the best-selling records of all time can be indie, you are not indie.

Yeah, whatever dude. They were on a major label, they're played on classic rock stations. We're not talking indie, here. Not by a longshot.
Speaking of this Ohio Players, though:

― pretzel walrus, Thursday, 31 May 2007 05:33 (nineteen years ago)
I think it's more "All collegiate/counter-culture music ever" than anything. After alternative, underground, college rock, etc. came "indie." In a few years there will be a new term no doubt. Probably something similar, and I'd bet it'll be something related to the internet (won't everything be!?).
David Reisman covers the topic of "indie" music (relatively speaking of course) in an essay from the 1950s where he talks about a high schoolers love of hot jazz in relation to his peers. "Listening to Popular Music" if I remember right.
― Cunga, Thursday, 31 May 2007 06:58 (nineteen years ago)
"college rock" in the eighties was never vilified as much as stuff that nowadays comes out under the rubric of "indie rock". right? and even early-to-mid nineties stuff labeled as "indie" never carried the same stigma. or am i a crazyman? all i know is, most contemporary indie rock, i.e., pitchforkiana, leaves me cold. but maybe it's cause I'M OLD.
i know there are a billion explanations for all this, like internet, people long weary of guitar rock, etc.
antietam vs clap your hands say yeah. or some such.
― dell, Thursday, 31 May 2007 07:46 (nineteen years ago)
do not cry for the electric guitar. it does not ask for your tears.
― nicky lo-fi, Thursday, 31 May 2007 08:03 (nineteen years ago)
Everyone else gets their guitars taken away.
Well, if they write the same kind of traditional verse-chorus based songs and back them with synths instead of guitars, no problem for me. :)

on her intro video, among all the usual "I'm so opiniated" general stuff, and the likes/dislikes, she came out with a piece of information for the general viewing public about the nature of current fashion in music.
one more time, loud as you can, how does it go?
― Mark G, Thursday, 31 May 2007 09:09 (nineteen years ago)
she also has a crush on pete docherty, despite her Tory beliefs. wtf people, wtf.
― Just got offed, Thursday, 31 May 2007 09:11 (nineteen years ago)
Why shouldn't a Tory have a crush on Pete Doherty?
― Tom D., Thursday, 31 May 2007 09:12 (nineteen years ago)
He seems a perfect crush figure for middle class convent girls
Doherty is an Anarcho-syndicalist with Trot leanings, innit? As opposed to middle class kid who read a Wikipedia article about Rimbaud or sump'n.

It's the way she made out PD as her perfect man. Somehow, I don't think such a relationship would square with her pretty-as-a-picture Cameronite lifestyle. The first discarded needle and he'd be out the house...

The full quote as seared into my brain: "I don't know if you've heard, but there's a new music taking over the country and it's called indie. I'm a bit of an indie rock'n'roller."
There was a delightful pause after "it's called.." during which I was desperately willing her to say NU RAVE.
― Groke, Thursday, 31 May 2007 09:22 (nineteen years ago)
"indie rock'n'roller" = DOES NOT PARSE
― Just got offed, Thursday, 31 May 2007 09:23 (nineteen years ago)
I thought it was going to be "Nu Rave" as well.
INDIE ! and I fell off my stool.
― Mark G, Thursday, 31 May 2007 09:24 (nineteen years ago)
unless you're talking about Six.BySeven, and they were hardly 'indie' by today's standards

― Noodle Vague, Thursday, 31 May 2007 09:30 (nineteen years ago)
just some girls. there's a male equivalent, and they're even worse, not even having their occasional good looks to fall back on in the eyes of this stern judge.
― Just got offed, Thursday, 31 May 2007 09:33 (nineteen years ago)
Yes, why do they want to sleep with Pete Doherty and not *insert name here*?
― Tom D., Thursday, 31 May 2007 09:34 (nineteen years ago)
but srsly vacuousness is a massive turn-off, so they can all burn as far as i'm concerned
maybe because pete docherty is a stock celebrity name whom they've actually heard of, and a successful recording artist?

― abanana, Thursday, 31 May 2007 10:33 (nineteen years ago)
that is not the indie that has become popular in the UK (to which this young lady is referring), the popular UK indie is arguably even worse
― Just got offed, Thursday, 31 May 2007 10:35 (nineteen years ago)
The Guardian asked its writers to evaluate this new music that's taking over the country.
J Harris: "not Oasis not Heavy Stereo not 18 Wheeler not Biffy Clyro therefore is shit."
A Petridish: "There have been millions of words produced by underemployed, jealous Kid A bloggers tediously delineating this "new" indie music apparently taking over the country. But I ALEXIS know the truth."
― Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 31 May 2007 10:48 (nineteen years ago)

if indie became at all like this it might end up being...probably not GOOD but definitely better than what it is.

Apparently 20-odd years ago Carole used to sing in a band called Fancy Footwork: I don't imagine she'll have heard of anything as modern and contemporary as this "Indie" 'though.
Did anyone here ever see Fancy Footwork? Were they any good? Did they release anything? If they did, what was it worth on E-bay last week and how much more do we think it's going to be worth (however briefly) on E-Bay in a few weeks time?
― Stewart Osborne, Thursday, 31 May 2007 15:51 (nineteen years ago)
Mainstream UK indie is great. It cannot really be called indie anymore, though, which is why Britpop is a better term.

Alas, this was probably one-off luck. I'm not going through ALL your reviewed bands hunting for plagiarism. It's a good thing I still had the actual wording of yours fresh in my mind, otherwise it might have passed unchecked and 'Dav1d R3nsh4w' would have been free to commit further acts of grotesque lifting...

I'd have found it eventually myself, I'd wager; I'm interested in the generally cack-handed critical reaction to the record anyway - part of the interview I did with them was about the reviews they'd received.
It's cute, Paul. You want one too, admit it. (Just joking, Louis!)
