I was well down with that until plaid shirt came into shot. I Heart France.

she's totally adorable

Is this still the case? Her 2015 album, My Dreams Dictate My Reality is fantastic, and totally ILM-bait. Fantastic 80s-sounding pop record.

Don't let any distaste you may feel towards Ariel Pink, who is a co-vocalist on two tracks, to dissuade you. This album reminds me a lot of the Sky Ferreira album from a few years back.

unfortunately her shot at critical consideration was torpedoed with the viral thing

I have no idea what viral event caused her undoing.

I thought something is weird about this release. Someone here recommended this album (no clue who, though, apologies). I checked out the album, was very impressed on first listen, and then did research to see what others were feeling. Haven't seen a whole lot of reviews. Pitchfork did an article on her but never reviewed the album, which seems odd - especially considering how great this album is.

i like her last record a lot but haven't heard the new one, kinda skeptical about the '80s thing tbh

is this the viral thing you're referring to? http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/5937716/viral-first-kiss-video-sends-soko-to-no-1-debut-on-streaming
I don't see how that would affect critical consideration. I do feel like she flies under the radar mainly because she never tours & spends more time acting now.

that's the one, which consigned her to the dual fates of "post-bauuer meme single" and "syncbait glurge singer-songwriter" in many people's minds, accurate or not

a) I didn't much like her last record at all.b) The 80s thing is overstated. Just sounds like modern guitar indie with reverb imo.

I had already forgotten all about that first kiss video. Chances are its long-term effect are minimal.

well it doesn't exactly match up with my idea of your taste so this is unsurprising

lol yeah. I've been on the Soko bus since early days, though ("I'll Kill Her" is a great late 00s single). I guess I'd been expecting one thing and was delivered another in the form of I Thought I Was an Alien, so I probably never gave it a fair shake.

the song with ariel pink that was on pitchfork is the worst thing i've ever heard
― flopson, Saturday, 19 September 2015 23:29 (ten years ago)
There are two AP songs on the album. Monster Love, which is actually a couple years old, is wonderful. Lovetrap, which is new to the album, is kinda really bad.
― Johnny Fever, Saturday, 19 September 2015 23:31 (ten years ago)
yeah i was referring to lovetrap... so bad lol
― flopson, Saturday, 19 September 2015 23:52 (ten years ago)
Ok, Lovetrap is probably my least favorite track on the album...
― Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Sunday, 20 September 2015 00:50 (ten years ago)
shame no-ones talking about this album, its really good. not even a pitchfork review. i love "lovetrap" actually, its grown on me

Surprised they didn't review it, because they gave her a BNT, and even a relatively lengthy interview: http://pitchfork.com/features/rising/9631-adrenaline-addict-inside-sokos-manic-pop-dreamworld/
