Fake surround?

Wonder if any of the audio experts can answer this

When I listen to "Orblivion" by The Orb on a 5:1 set I have a very obvious surround experience with the sounds coming obviously from front or behind. The CD isn't SACD, DVD or anything, just a normal CD, which means it isn't a surround mix, just the original stereo mix, but it still gives an undeniable feeling of true surround when played on a surround set.

Anyone have more info on this?

(And btw. "Orblivion" is just one example of this, but it is kind of the most obvious one)

I presume you just listen to The Orb to test your stereo before you listen to a proper record, Geir?

Anyway, the only experience I have is with cinema 5:1, wherein the 5:1 system will automatically balance the stereo mix through the 5 speakers to best replicate the surround feeling. I suspect your system is doing the same thing.

When I watch regular (stereo) TV channels on my surround system in the Movie/Music/Sport settings, voices are front center and music is in the surround speakers. Flat/Clear settings: just the front speakers.

I do enjoy quite a bit of electronica, you know. There may not be a lot of melodies, but at least there are harmonies. And cool sounds and stereo effects. :)
