..So a friend sent me a link to this today. I went straight for Japancakes version of 'What You Want,' seeing as it's my favourite track on MBV's Loveless. Already I envisioned using both the original and this version as bookends on future compilations.

I didn't see this as a previous topic under 'search' but I figured it'd just be a matter o' time before y'all dug this one up.

What say youze?

Listened to Sometimes (seeing as it's my favorite track), and if the rest of these covers have that form, it'll be interesting. Instead of the overall sound, you get pulled to the melody, gives em new context, and I think that's important with an album as poured over as Loveless.

oh great another thread above 'loveless'.

oh great another thread above 'loveless'.

With this steel guitar though it will finally make an impact on hawaiian culture

trashthumb, Friday, 26 October 2007 13:53 (eighteen years ago)

Above, yes.

There has already been talk on this thread:

Is the search acting up or is there no thread on Japancakes?

(Easily found via the search function, I must note...)

Glad to hear a few more tracks from this. Not in any way stunning like the original, but it's cool to hear these songs in an entirely new context. "Soon" was pretty neat. Will pick this up used when i find it to give it a little more attention.

I don't think you're supposed to post that link to the internet

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 26 October 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

whiney nu-etiquette means "not supposed to" has no modern usage equivalent, sorry

This is nice. Reminds me a little of American Analog Set in places.

what about the c86 all stars?

http://youtube.com/watch?v=DU_JyINXhV4

they do stuff from loveless AND field mice songs.

scott seward, Friday, 26 October 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

three songs in this is pretty well executed. i was interested to see how they tackled 'touched' and they've done a particularly great version of that with the strings

the version of 'to here knows when' is beautiful, even if its resemblence to the original is by way of melody only

OTM; and that's a good thing

My girlfriend *HATES* Loveless, but i think i'm gonna get this for her for Christimas (among other gifts, mind you)

stephen, Sunday, 28 October 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

do you hate your girlfriend?

s1ocki, Sunday, 28 October 2007 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

I still haven't heard it, am waiting on the actual disc. Call me a purist.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 28 October 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

not entirely, but i'll be damned if she never comes around to enjoy Loveless, which i think she should for one reason or another; it's one of those "cornerstones" of my tastes, if nothing else, and i think it's a record about which everyone can find *something* to like.

stephen, Sunday, 28 October 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

"do you hate your girlfriend?"

"not entirely"

...

jed_, Sunday, 28 October 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

I was going to say! If she doesn't like it, let her not like it. Relax.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 28 October 2007 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

It's just that she's never heard more than *maybe* a minute or two at a time. Hates it on the principle that it's "distorted" and such. Which is fair, but I think maybe a version with the tunes/melodies, but without the noisy guitar assault, would really point to the strong arrangements and *songs* on this record.

Maybe I'm expecting too much, though.

stephen, Sunday, 28 October 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

yeah getting it for christmas seems like bad form, even among other gifts. so is this out yet?

point taken. should probably be a one-off gift instead. U MADE ME REALISE.

official release (last time I checked Amazon) was maybe 2nd week of November, iirc.

stephen, Sunday, 28 October 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

so this leaked
i'm a few songs in and frankly i've been less than impressed so far, not that i was expecting much to begin with
seems like kind of a toss off. i find it hard to believe a lot of thought was put into either the conception or execution of this project
anyone else heard it yet? thoughts?

My girlfriend *HATES* Loveless

dump her now

latebloomer, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

I got it the other day and enjoy it! First time through was a 'figure out what's going to play the main melody' listen then after that I just let it go as it does.

I have to give them major credit for not cloning the cover.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

Aaaaah, it was um "ok"

Havent played the very last track, but I admire the concept, and even the execution, but I would have liked it halfway between what they did and what they were emulating.

One time, I put the MBV LL CD on, and turned it off after two tracks as it wasn't the right time and it wasn't happening. Worried, I played it again a week later and it was alright again. That's how it sort of played me this time. I'd not have bought it if I'd have bought/dl'd one track. Having said all that, the version of track 3, the 'daftie' from the original, is quite spectacularly great.

Mark G, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

(I know, I'm cheeky, I d/l it with that link that's been withdrawn. As I say, it was alright, but I would not play it to someone who didn't like the original at all, it's not going to change heir mind.)

Mark G, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

i find it hard to believe a lot of thought was put into either the conception or execution of this project

i think the exact opposite - it sounds very well thought through and arranged

also the concept in itself isn't a particularly complicated one

i think about half of it stands up on its own, but some of the songs don't really transcend the initial novelty. i need to spend more time with it but after the first couple of listens i think 'to here knows when' is the jewel and to me brings something to the table that the original never did

electricsound, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

first couple of listens i think 'to here knows when' is the jewel and to me brings something to the table that the original never did

Yeah, agreed. Basically the album is neither a completely reverent recreation nor is it much of a reinvention -- this isn't negative, it's just pretty much exactly what that would sound like!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

As I say, I want to hear "Soon", it has the potential to be the awesome track. Here's hoping!

Mark G, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

i like what they've done with it, but for me it's one of the more novel tracks. the use of pedal steel in place of the whammy bar guitars works really well though

electricsound, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)

I think this is really fantastic. Those tracks which don't work that well are paradoxically the ones with big hooks, eg. 'When you Sleep'. 'Loomer', 'Touched' or 'Bloomer' trump the originals in my book, but then again I've never been fanatical about "Loveless"

baaderonixx, Thursday, 1 November 2007 01:34 (eighteen years ago)

This is nice. Reminds me a little of American Analog Set in places.

Yeah, the vibraphone/soft drumming combination creates a really pretty subdued aesthetic. The subtle, reverbed EBow, chimy electric piano, and whole note bassline on "Blown a Wish" are also reminiscent of Sigur Ros. This take on the record stands on its own and I'll probably be listening to it for a while. I don't think we can talk enough about Loveless.

plastic tipped cigar, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:01 (eighteen years ago)

Haha I meant 'Blown a Wish' instead of 'Bloomer' upthread. That one never did it for me on the original album but sounds good on this one.

baaderonixx, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

"Soon" was 'quite good'...

Oh, I know what the problem is: The rhythms aren't good enough. That's it.

Mark G, Friday, 2 November 2007 13:39 (eighteen years ago)

i only heard that two minute excerpt of only shallow which is on the website and i didn't like it. not because of the pedal steel, the country touch, that was an interesting new take. i was missing the noise, the distortion, the nebulosity of the original. the canvas on which the melodies work. on their own they are too easy to pin down for me, just dumb muzak for the supermarket. not sure about the rest but i also listened to the two minutes of their version of heaven or las vegas. and that version was devoid of any new idea. almost a perfect clone without the voice of course which makes about 50% of the charm of the twins. not sure but even the synthesizer/keyboard they used sounded very eighties to me. how boring!

alex in mainhattan, Friday, 2 November 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

i really enjoy this, even if i think the bassist overplays at times (esp. on "to here knows when").

arrrggghhh that's just horrible.

pc user, Sunday, 4 November 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

two months pass...

Finally listening to this and I'm quite enjoying it - the sound is really nice, relaxed - but still emotional. It's just fun to hear a slightly different take on these somewhat over-familiar, but obviously great batch of songs

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 28 January 2008 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

I think i'll listen to this again tonight.
