One More Cup of Coffee - Roger McGuinn and Calexico

I wanna hear this

baaderonixx, Friday, 26 October 2007 10:52 (eighteen years ago)

Dear god, I don't think I'd seen that whole list before. Definitely in. When's it come out?

Ben Boyerrr, Friday, 26 October 2007 11:43 (eighteen years ago)

I loathe far too many of these people to want to hear the whole thing.

Though track 14 is good (and I'm glad to see it get a proper release).

EZ Snappin, Friday, 26 October 2007 13:10 (eighteen years ago)

Señor (Tales of Yankee Power) - Willie Nelson and Calexico

Wow!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 26 October 2007 13:20 (eighteen years ago)

I only own one Dylan album so I don't feel like I'm enough of a fan to be really hyped about this project, and I actively dislike like half of the artists on here. But just the fact that the 'house band' (the Million Dollar Bashers) on a bunch of the songs includes Nels Cline, Tom Verlaine and half of Sonic Youth is enough to make me really wanna hear this.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 26 October 2007 13:30 (eighteen years ago)

OMG, that malkmus one of maggie's farm is soooo awful, i actually couldn't finish listening to it. it makes him sound truly vapid, even for him....

iago g., Friday, 26 October 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

sounded good to me! pretty straight up Newport 65 version it seems ...

tylerw, Friday, 26 October 2007 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

How the fuck did local twin cities douchebag mason jennings manage to get on this twice?! ugggghhhh

John Justen, Friday, 26 October 2007 20:03 (eighteen years ago)

yeah him and jack johnson are sort of the odd ones here ... who knows, maybe they'll be great! don't know who Marcus Carl Franklin is ...

tylerw, Friday, 26 October 2007 20:09 (eighteen years ago)

that is an actor who is one of the many Dylans in the movie (a teenage kid I think)

gff, Friday, 26 October 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

Not for this project, but still - Dylan related awesomeness.

Oilyrags, Friday, 26 October 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

im neutral but you better believe my dad will be first in line for this

The Million Dollar Bashers are a supergroup featuring Sonic Youth stars Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley, Wilco guitarist Nels Cline, Television guitarist Tom Verlaine, Dylan bassist Tony Garnier, guitarist Smokey Hormel and keyboardist John Medeski.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 26 October 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

here's maggie's farm

I'm stunned. That's...actually kind of good. Steve Shelley seems to have broken out of his 14-year slump, and Malkmus sounds kind of excited. I was fearing a colossal disappointment on the level of Dim Stars, so I'm looking forward to the rest of the Million Dollar Bashers stuff.

From Dirty on he always sounded really listless to me. Prior to that he was as close as any drummer has come to building on Keith Moon's innovations.

What, no Nickelback? This is just another upper middle class (mostly white, mostly male) album [or have I been reading too much Carl Wilson].

They could have gotten Lil' Wayne. He plays guitar now, and he'll guest on anybody's record:

You've been playing the guitar for a little time now. Any chance we might hear a Lil Wayne guitar solo some time soon?

I've already done it I'm featured on the new Enrique Iglesias single, "Push Up On It." I played the guitar on that song. I also played on my artist Currency the Hot Sptter;s first song, "Staring at the World." So I've already recorded and laid the guitar down [on tracks]. I'm on tour right now and I've played the guitar at every show, so I'm good. So the question isn't, "Am I gonna start puttin' the guitar in music?" I've already done it.June 5, 2007 blog posting taken from Scratch magazine(an XXl offshoot)

curmudgeon, Friday, 26 October 2007 23:44 (eighteen years ago)

True enough, compared to Red Hot + Blue it's more limited. The Sufjan one drives me nuts.

Eazy, Saturday, 27 October 2007 00:05 (eighteen years ago)

is 'million dollar bashers' a reference to 'billion dollar babies'? doesn't dylan love alice cooper or something?

LaMonte, Saturday, 27 October 2007 01:12 (eighteen years ago)

it's a reference to "million dollar bash" from the basement tapes

dmr, Saturday, 27 October 2007 04:43 (eighteen years ago)

doesn't dylan love alice cooper or something?

Dylan loves taking his potatoes down to be mashed.

Mr. Que, Saturday, 27 October 2007 13:20 (eighteen years ago)

The Million Dollar Bashers are a supergroup featuring Sonic Youth stars Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley, Wilco guitarist Nels Cline, Television guitarist Tom Verlaine, Dylan bassist Tony Garnier, guitarist Smokey Hormel and keyboardist John Medeski.

god when i was a kid the idea of tom verlaine playing with sonic youth would've given me the vapors. so wtf yeah i'm excited for this!

gff, Saturday, 27 October 2007 13:25 (eighteen years ago)

lee ranaldo, nels cline and tom verlaine on a track sounds pretty amazing

dmr, Saturday, 27 October 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

lol elderly super group

jhøshea, Saturday, 27 October 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i dig the maggie's farm a lot, the soloing is great

Mr. Que, Saturday, 27 October 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

it's funny, though some of his stuff can't be covered well at all. Like Tweedy's Twist Of Fate, I had to turn it off a minute or two into it, it was just too much. I don't know how you could re-do that song and make it sound interesting.

I got a little further with the Cat power cover of Stuck Inside, but, again, it sounds too much like the original, and not in a good way. I dunno. I don't like the way she sings/phrases "Oh, Mama. . ." Stupid, huh?

Maggie's Farm is pretty straightforward, but it's a great one to cover, I think.

Mr. Que, Saturday, 27 October 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

That's what I mean, they are all (at least on the Maggie's Farm cover) trying so hard to match the original, what the hell is the point of that? Not sure if maybe the material is just too intimidating to them or what, but you feel embarrassed for them almost

iago g., Saturday, 27 October 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

well in defense I think some of it is used in the movie so I'm sure they didn't want to get too far from the original

I'm sure some of it's terrible tho

dmr, Saturday, 27 October 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

this is probably common knowledge but there's a cd of malkmus and silkworm doing a bunch of basement tapes covers

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Crust_Brothers

I heard skwm/bottomless pit may have recorded some stuff for this soundtrack but it didn't make the cut, not sure why

dmr, Saturday, 27 October 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe I wasn't listening hard enough, or need to hear it again but that "Maggie's Farm" rendition seemed like standard barband schtick to me that added nothing unique.

curmudgeon, Saturday, 27 October 2007 18:18 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I pretty much agree with that. There was some decent guitar-lick-trading underneath the verses, but not OMG WTF AIYIYI great. I still am looking forward to getting the whole set.

Rock Hardy, Saturday, 27 October 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

I have no desire to hear any of these songs.

da croupier, Saturday, 27 October 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

Starbucks gold, though.

da croupier, Saturday, 27 October 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

If it was Million Dollar Bashers stuff I might be curious in a Backbeat soundtrack way.

da croupier, Saturday, 27 October 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

was JUST

da croupier, Saturday, 27 October 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

as I recall, the Crust Brothers version of Going to Acapulco is pretty great. But I also thought the Silkworm/Malkmus version of "You Ain't Goin Nowhere" was pretty good too.

Mr. Que, Saturday, 27 October 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

I see it's out now!

Mark G, Thursday, 1 November 2007 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

the Crust Brothers version of "Going to Acapulco" is terrific. I end up listening to it more than the original. The rest of that Crust Brothers record is good (nice "Tuesday's Gone"), but I think "Going to Acapulco" is the highlight.

Euler, Thursday, 1 November 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

Most if not all of the Malkmus stuff heard in the movie is lipsynched by Cate Blanchett, so I'm sure Haynes wanted it to be recognizably Dylanesque.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 1 November 2007 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

I love this so far. The elderly Starbucks supergroup or whatever is really great. Some of the tracks are really straight, but on a few of them (even the Eddie Vedder "Watchtower") they douse the songs in some nice weird swirly licks and organ riffs.

Ben Boyerrr, Thursday, 1 November 2007 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

Best poll ever

Mark Rich@rdson, Thursday, 1 November 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

I heard a good bit of it today, the Million Dollar Bashers stuff was way too staid, almost Late Show band type stuff, but most was pretty listenable. I can't imagine buying it, would definitely rather hear the originals, but a pleasant coffee background thing when the singers aren't actually trying to imitate Dylan.

da croupier, Thursday, 1 November 2007 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

somebody needs to shoot John Medeski

da croupier, Thursday, 1 November 2007 23:02 (eighteen years ago)

I vote yes just for the Cat Power track.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 1 November 2007 23:14 (eighteen years ago)

i can't wait to never hear this!

scott seward, Thursday, 1 November 2007 23:42 (eighteen years ago)

listening to the Willie Nelson/Calexico "Senor" -- sounds awesome ... Willie's guitar solo is nice and mangled. Not sure about the mariachi singer who comes in there in the middle, but hey, it's Calexico ...

tylerw, Friday, 2 November 2007 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

You know what, this poll is fine and all, but I mean to say "Best Poll Ever" in the Billy Joel "We Didn't Start the Fire" thread.

Mark G, Monday, 5 November 2007 00:30 (eighteen years ago)

I listened to some of this streamed online - it's kind of fun the first time through, but I don't know how many times I'd need to hear these versions. I like the Malkmus, Cat Power, Jeff Tweedy, Mira Billotte (whom I'd never heard of before), Jim James & Calexico.

o. nate, Monday, 5 November 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

They should have got actual bar bands to do this!!

people explosion, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

Don't know if this belongs here, but this new Cat Power track that P'fork posted ("Song To Bobby") is pretty nice and Dylan-y (and probably better than most of what's on that soundtrack): http://downloads.pitchforkmedia.com/Song%20To%20Bobby.mp3

morris pavilion, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

har, what a weird mash note masquerading as a song (that cat power tune)! she hearts bobby ...

tylerw, Thursday, 8 November 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm, reactions here seem a bit too negative. I really like the ones I expected to like, ie. Roger Mc Guinn and Willie Nelson, ie. basically practically everything calexico is involved with (apart from that stupid Charlotte G. cover). Oh and Mark Lanegan's track is pretty great too.

baaderonixx, Thursday, 15 November 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

Mark Lanegan's "Man in the Long Black Coat" is straightforward but also perfect and creepy. An ideal song for him.

I don't care what the poll says you people make this sound the worst thing ever. And I believe you.

Billy Pilgrim, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 03:49 (eighteen years ago)

i want to hear dan hicks' version of subterreanean homesick blues. i really really do.

i think the black keys totally kick wicked messenger's ass.

Emily Bjurnhjam, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 04:58 (eighteen years ago)

This may not be the most forward-looking album of 2007, but I have to admit I find lots of it quite enjoyable.

o. nate, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

10. Goin' To Acapulco - Jim James and Calexico

this scene in the movie was great
