Lots of GREAT songs, but "Everything Counts" is among the best Depeche Mode singles ever and thus very hard to beat.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 27 October 2007 00:13 (eighteen years ago)

As much as I want to vote for "Rockit", you just can't fuck with "Gold"

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 27 October 2007 00:30 (eighteen years ago)

"Rockit," mainly cause I'm sick to death of UB40. "Cruel Summer" is also nice. Maybe the McLaren record, too. Otherwise, I sincerely pity you poor malnourished Brits.

JN$OT, Saturday, 27 October 2007 08:42 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, give it up for herbie

KC's "Give It Up" is the best thing they ever did.

The video clip is pretty much WTF?

Uh, Kraftwerk?

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Saturday, 27 October 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, missed them, too.

JN$OT, Saturday, 27 October 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

"Tour De France" wasn't a very big hit. May be in the July chart.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 27 October 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

It's near the bottom of your list, Geir.

JN$OT, Saturday, 27 October 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

It's at yr list bottom, I reckons!

Driving down from Scotland yesterday I listened to Dale Wintons pick of the pops which featured October 1983. This list has a lot of good stuff on it but I think Marcello was right when he said that 83 was one of the worse years for music.

Billy Dods, Monday, 29 October 2007 11:06 (eighteen years ago)

83 was perhaps the best year ever for chart music. Lots of great synhthpop.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 29 October 2007 11:14 (eighteen years ago)

And hardly American music at all, which is also a good thing.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 29 October 2007 11:14 (eighteen years ago)

August '83 was better in Americay, maybe.

After hesitating between "I.O.U." and "Give It Up," I voted for "Gold."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 29 October 2007 11:20 (eighteen years ago)

The summer I turned 15, so an August shower of warm and awkward memories drenches all of these tracks. I could justify a vote for about 10 different singles on purely personal grounds, but I'm gonna go for Tour De France cos it combines sleeping on the camp bed in my brother's room when his fiancee came to stay and waking up to Radio City on his JVC mini-system type reverie AND its continuing vital role in my own daughter's appreciation of all things electronic (though she prefers Elektro Kardiogramm).

Michael Jones, Monday, 29 October 2007 11:29 (eighteen years ago)

Lack of a China Crisis option is a bit of a blow, though.

Michael Jones, Monday, 29 October 2007 11:29 (eighteen years ago)

August '83 was better in Americay, maybe.

In 1983, even the American charts were crowded with British acts.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 29 October 2007 12:41 (eighteen years ago)

No "Band Aka - Joy", no credibility!

JTS, Monday, 29 October 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Saturday, 3 November 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

OK. I have now found a better way to do these 80s nostalgia polls (see the 1981 poll), but this was still a damn fine period with lots of great songs.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 3 November 2007 00:09 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Sunday, 4 November 2007 00:06 (eighteen years ago)

The Lotus Eaters should have creamed this poll!
